  1. DancingShoes, I am so sorry to hear that. I firmly believe that it can still be their time in the future, but their path is just going to be different and perhaps a bit more adventurous. Certainly, my DD has achieved a lot and I do think finals for two years in a row is absolutely amazing. Maybe, if you're strong enough to try again next year, we'll see you on the circuit. No matter what, lots of commiserations for you and your DD and don't give up. Now is simply a time to reflect and re-evaluate the road to take, x
  2. does anyone know if a Year 8 place has been offered? My DD is naturally very upset and has said she kind of hopes no-one was offered a place as it would make it easier, knowing that the current Year7 is a very full year whereas I hope at least one child has or else it was a wasted effort for all the Year 8 candidates! Not the best attitude I know but I understand where she's coming from too. After a quick cry, she's gone upstairs to do some homework!
  3. twoballerinas, at my daughter's MA centre in Bath 3 Year 8's and 3 Year 7's (one my DD) got offered MA places from the waiting list last year so it really isn't an absolute no yet.
  4. I've also finally received today's post, alongwith the small envelope. My DD is still at school and I am not looking forward to telling her the news of a No again this year. But, as we all know, they've done so well to get to finals and I am going to definitely remind her of all her achievements this year to help her counter-balance the no. But at least we get to keep her at least a year longer and she can now audition for EYB in July which she wouldn't have been able to do if it had been a yes as the performances aren't until late September. Also hope she does well at her MA assessment in May so she can at least continue there for another year with a teacher she adores. Many congrats to all the yes's and reserve pool. One of my DD's friends got a place last May from reserve so it really isn't over yet.
  5. congratulations discomonkfish. that's going to be one very excited DD when you get her home from school later!
  6. jennyboydance, I too am sorry to hear your news. Step back and take stock. It really doesn't have to be the end, particularly as your son's talent and drive (as well as your's) have brought him so very far. We were in your shoes last year (and might be again should our postman ever deliver, he's always really late!) and my DD has made a lot of progress in both her dancing and her handling of things. We have managed to keep up with associates (a 2-hr drive away) plus additional class options and the move to our local secondary school which resulted in two finals this year as opposed to just the one last year. And if she gets a No again this year, we are looking at moving dance school locally (her teacher's recommendation as she says she can't push her forward enough any more) as she is still adamant she will be a dancer, no matter what. Sending you and your DS massive virtual hugs. At least the agonising wait is now over, just eat lots of chocolate and enjoy lots of family time over the Easter break. xx
  7. Thank goodness I haven't really met such mums in our travels but then my DD doesn't do the competition or festival circuits! She took part in a show at the weekend and I have to say the audience there supported all acts equally. I was so very impressed as the first show she has done with this particular dance school and I was naturally very vocal (in appreciation too I might add) about all the acts I had seen. The mums I've met through my DD's JA class last year couldn't have been nicer to both of use from week 1 and have continued to be so through into this year. Do you think some people watch shows like Dance Moms and think that the behaviour shown is one they must emulate to be a dance mum?? I have loved reading this thread, particularly the stories of the children who have done particularly well in a beautifully quiet and un-show off way (sorry, I know that's not good grammar!!). I hope that's the way my DD and I are perceived, as we have always ensured we praise other children too and try to talk down her achievements, and then only talk about them if questioned directly by someone! Keep those stories coming!!!!
  8. And I've just found the appropriate page on their website that states the application deadline is tomorrow, Wednesday 23rd March, so this is like last year. http://www.elmhurstdance.co.uk/summer-school-1.html Ladies, stop panicking!!! It's hard though with so many results still be to be announced and everything is out of our control now, not a good place to be in.
  9. I know the closing date last year was late March and, looking back, I didn't get an email until 9th April with the summer school results. I did email earlier this month as I couldn't recall if I'd actually sent the paperwork in to get a very prompt reply back reassuring me I had and that results would be out in a few weeks - no definite time period. I would think that they are trying to get all the vocational place offers out for September first before they get to the junior summer school so, personally, I am not worrying about it yet. And apparently the finals letters went out in this evening's post...
  10. Piccolo, group 3 was only for years 9 and 10 as I was sitting in the atrium when they were split up according to year of entry for their school show around. I guess there were probably approx 25 in the group, as per the other groups.
  11. My DD is driving me to distraction! One of the other girls apparently told her yesterday that the results would be out in 24-48 hours, even though no-one has told us anything and last year it was 8 days. I've told her that it will probably be 8 days again and by post so to stop thinking about it until next week, particularly as she has her Dance House performances this weekend so really needs to concentrate on that!! But she did have a fabulous day yesterday and didn't want to come home, unlike WL earlier this month. She feels she did her best too which is currently good enough for me!! Hope everyone's DC had a great time up in Birmingham this week and I echo Billyelliott in getting out the G&T for the next week or so!! :-)
  12. you and me both Ballet4Boyz! Not sure I can keep going through the highs and lows of audition season for a fourth year in a row, if I include her initial JA's audition. Plus she's got her MA's assessment in late May and a pathway meeting at Swindon Dance Academy over the Easter holidays (not quite sure what the latter entails though but it's part of her Steps2 class stuff!).... Sometimes I think she's stronger than me!
  13. Ballet4Boyz, don't lose heart. One of my daughter's friends got a No from WL and Tring funding auditions last year but she did get offered a place at Elmhurst. And from what I can gather, she is enjoying it there, albeit with expected bouts of homesickness, and it was actually her preferred school before all the finals took place anyway. And, as you know, there are numerous stories on here about children who didn't succeed the first or even second year of trying but have gone to do great things with their dancing. When the time is right for them, they will get there. Unfortunately we just don't have a crystal ball able to tell us when it is the right time - would be so much easier if we did but then I also believe that the no's at this stage really do help weed out those DC who really want it versus those who aren't really that sure and are perhaps only caught up in the perceived romance of it all, if you know what I mean. Certainly, talking to a friend the other day whose elder daughter used to swim competitively, every no she got along the way, as well as the yes's, have helped her grow up into a very level headed young lady where not a lot phases her compared to her direct peers.
  14. We got ours by post last year and I think it was roughly a week after the auditions. Certainly we had them just before the end of term as my DD went into school upset and didn't want to tell anyone. By the time the holidays were over, she had resigned herself to her result and determined she would carry on auditioning until she got in. So here we are a year later, and I'm waiting for next week to be over and done, even though I'm really nervous she will psych herself out again as she did at WL last week... Good luck to everyone at Elmhurst next week, hope your DC all do well (although also hoping my DD gets a place!!!)
  15. We got the MA result last year around 4pm on 30th March. We got a phone call with a place offer in early June (my DD was short listed) after a lot of the vocational school shuffling had sorted itself out, even though there was still shuffling going on in July from memory.
  16. I don't know how many get reserve but my DD got a straight no from Elmhurst finals last year (we're hoping for better things this year, having been invited to attend finals again). And, as Happymum has already said, there were several children there on the day who had offers from WL who attended for a variety of reasons. My DD did then get her MAs place once the shuffling around with vocational places started and then this year finals for WL and Elmhurst
  17. Thank you Krishell and hugh congrats to your DD, just brilliant! Onwards and upwards for us here. I've reminded my DD about a bad dress rehearsal (WL) can mean a successful first night (Elmhurst)! Hope the analogy works for her. But I know she's not ready to give up so she will put us through it all again next year if necessary and it's not as if she isn't doing well with her training locally at the moment.
  18. It was a No for my DD too (yr8) but as she expected and told me on the day. She really struggled to believe she was good enough to be invited to finals, especially as she didn't make it last year, so her head really got in her way. Trying hard to build her up now so she doesn't do the same thing to herself at Elmhurst next week. Have to say I thought it was a nicely worded letter.
  19. They had 6 girls there yesterday. They split my DC's group into two so that the Yr8 girls went with some of the Yr7 boys, keeping the Yrs9&10 entrants together. The class was only an hour and no pointe work required which she was happy about. WaitingMum - I know she'd be ecstatic with a WL offer as she's dreamed of being there for so long! Everyone she met yesterday, when she actually spoke to them(!), she said were really friendly and nice, as they were to me and the other parents. Beautiful school too. Well, we'll see! She now needs to concentrate on her tap exam next weekend which I think is a good thing, might keep her mind off Elmhurst for a little bit! Balletqueen & Amos73 - I look forward to trying to spot you on the 15th! And all the best for your DCs too, they all have done so well. Everyone else, thank you so much for your lovely comments, some of which I will share with my DD this evening.
  20. It was a lovely sunny but cold day up there yesterday but unfortunately my DD started to psych herself out from the moment we arrived, even more so when she saw the other DC arrive. She says she messed up a couple of exercises in the class so she spent the rest of the day trying not to cry which meant she didn't really speak to the other girls, even hiding from a couple of her old JA friends who are currently at the school as she felt embarressed. She's also convinced she's not good enough to go to WL and seems to struggle with the idea that to get the invitation means she has really improved and is showing a lot more potential. So not expecting a Yes when we get the results (not sure when that will be either). Trying to build her back up again ready for Elmhurst on the 15th. Must admit that, although WL is a lovely school, I'm not really sure it's the school for my DD and I can't really see there, she says she feels the same way. She absolutely loves Elmhurst so fingers crossed I can change her thinking a little bit and build her confidence up in the next week! Do hope everyone else enjoyed it. It really was lovely to be up there, although it is a long day for all with lots of hanging around.
  21. We're getting all set for tomorrow - boys plus Yrs8, 9 & 10 from the info sheets sent recently. My DD is getting increasingly nervous and short tempered with her little sister, just hope she does as well as she can and enjoys the day! I have to say the last month has been harder than I expected, particularly when we went through this last year with Elmhurst. See you all on the other side and good luck to all going up to WL tomorrow and Friday.
  22. We're also Group 2 this year (for Year 8 entry). Last year my DD was in the first group and there were 3 groups of girls, one which had the Year 8 & 9 girls, but I didn't really pay any attention to anything except the group we were involved with. I know last year my DD went underchanged but not sure if she should again this year. Looking at the timetable I've been sent, there is a time slot for them to change for the orthopaedic assessments and then again to prepare for the class.
  23. Balletqueen, I have the same question ref Year 8 finals at White Lodge & Elmhurst. I keep telling my DD that if there is a place, they won't necessarily award it if they don't feel any of the candidates are quite good enough but I also tell her to just enjoy the day and do her best. So hard though to keep her grounded without taking away her excitement!
  24. From memory (we went to an open day in 2014), they do approx 9 GCSEs and do get quite good results. I know they had a recent Ofsted report published so might be worth looking at that. Not sure if their results are recorded in the school league tables but would be worth having a look. I do recall they do combined Science which counts as a double award as opposed to 3 separate subjects. I know the ballet schools have to maintain a good level of academic results in order to continue getting their funding from the DfE. Also have a look at the annual report on the RBS website. Big congrats to your DD too. She's done brilliantly to get to WL finals, the competition is so stiff.
  25. Something I'm curious about too Aklf. Last year, including my daughter, 4 girls in her RBS JAs class were invited to Elmhurst finals but only 3 to WL (not my DD). One got a place at WL, the other 2 got Elmhurst (one outright, one WL initially). My DD was devastated as she felt she must be appalling to be the only one who didn't get anywhere in terms of vocational school although she did get MAs (which she subsequently has understood was an amazing achievement in itself, having only done one term as a JA when the auditions were done). Well, roll on 12 months and she's been invited to both WL and Elmhurst finals for a Y8 place, and this is, I've been told, a far greater achievement than it would have been last year. Whereas I know of girls who get finals for both schools last year but not a place haven't got the opportunity for finals again this year. All very confusing as what exactly do the schools look for? Now, I know my DD has improved immensely since last year but surely so have the other children? I am delighted for my girl but understand the puzzlement all to well. And who knows what will happen next for her? Trying not to think too much about it as I have far too much grey hair already and don't need to add to them! And then when you look at the SS offers!!! You can just go round in too many circles here I'm discovering.
