Mikhailovsky at the London Coliseum, March 2013

But, surely, he is producing DQ not re-choreographing it all? [Apologies - I was writing this at the same time as Janet posted!]- 110 replies

Mikhailovsky at the London Coliseum, March 2013
capybara replied to alison's topic in Performances seen & general discussions
What I should have added last night was a comment about the extent to which Osipova and Vasiliev, and indeed the whole troupe and the DQ production itself, generated a level of interest and excitement in ballet that is rare to behold. If the general talk in the toilet queue is about the performance rather than the minutiae of life then the audience is really hooked and enthralled - and it was. Let's hope that the halo effect carries forward into sales and enthusiasm for home and other visiting companies - indeed for ballet more generally. And fingers crossed that Carlos can pull it off for the RB.- 110 replies

Stunning performances from Natalia and Ivan again tonight and, as someone has said, her fouettes were astonishing. Having seen ivan previously on stage and recently in the cinema (the Bolshoi version of DQ) I had a slight sense that he might have been in some pain from his back. If so, I hope he is not doing it any permanent damage by dancing on. And, incidentally, reference to the discussion above, no "donkeys were shot" although an adorable one made two appearances on stage.- 110 replies

But the RB has an established clientele whereas the Mikhailovsky does not and, apart from the fame of Osipova and Vasiliev, is relatively unknown. But it remains astonishing that Semionova, Matvienko, Sarafanov and Novikova were not more of a draw. They are all simply wonderful artistes whom it is a privilege to get to see.- 110 replies

And have a young child, I believe. What is even more amazing, perhaps, is that Olesya is not yet a Principal at the Mariinsky where she remained when Leonid left for the Mikhailovsky.- 110 replies

I want to record my appreciation for the performance of Giselle last night by Olesya Novikova and Leonid Sarafanov. Their dancing was so beautiful and their characterisation so sincere that the surrounding mediocrities of the corps and the sets faded into insignificance. They were cheered wholeheartedly by a very appreciative audience. If you were not there, you missed something really special.- 110 replies

It is definitely on at East Finchley but anyone going to O's and V's DQ at the Coli will need to leave before the end of Esmeralda.- 184 replies

Russian audiences are notorious for applauding flashy steps at any (inappropriate) moment so the kind of silence some of us like might feel a little disconcerting for Russians dancing here. Greeting Principals on stage with applause has become such a regular feature at RB performances that it feels strange (as if something is missing) when one sees a show in the regions where there is no such tradition.- 110 replies

Clement Crisp's essay on Aladdin is a critical masterpiece and well worth a read even if you do not agree with him. See Links. -
ENB 2013/2014: A new production of Le Corsaire

Fingers crossed for ENB that Le Corsaire will sell. Good news for them that My First Cinderella, a show for children which opens at the Peacock Theatre this week before touring, has very nearly sold out. -

BRB ALADDIN SPRING 2013
capybara replied to Jan McNulty's topic in Performances seen & general discussions
This evening's performance unfortunately had about a third of the theatre empty. There is much to enjoy and I agree that the publicity was poor. There are standby tickets at £25 available from 3 hours before the performance. Last opportunity is for tomorrow's show starting at 1.00pm (an unusual time for a matinee!). -
I'll just repeat here that ENB is offering 2 tickets for the price of one on the top three prices for this Triple. You have to quote EMERGING to the Box Office. I've been lucky to see some rehearsals. It will be a terrific show and a wonderful opportunity to see both established and rising stars. Best bet is to book for the performances which have Vadim Muntagirov in both Petite Mort and Etudes.

I don't normally contribute to this part of balletcoforum. However, yesterday, at the final session of RBS's series of lecture/demonstrations about the schools which influences Ninette de Valois, there was emphasis on the need to retain the English/Ashton style. It was such an august gathering that I hesitated to enquire whether the enrolment of so many Upper School students whose initial training has been abroad and the subsequent integration of many of them into the RB and BRB risked having an adverse impact on style.

BRB ALADDIN SPRING 2013
capybara replied to Jan McNulty's topic in Performances seen & general discussions
Quote from the review at post #18: But while they were cheered to the rafters at the end, there was a warning from BRB chairman Professor Michael Clarke that, unless the North- East ballet-loving public turned out in greater numbers, there could be a question mark about the long-term viability of BRB’s long-standing tradition of twice-yearly visits to the region. This is really worrying and such a challenge for all companies which tour. Most of the theatres visited by ENB this year were far from full. And we are talking Aladdin and Sleeping Beauty here .......
