  1. Well Ann I recognise most of the names on this thread!! Do you ever post much in the Doing Dance thread? That's where all these "newbies" have been posting .....but even then some not exclusively there!
  2. That's interesting ......do,they have to attain certain marks then to be awarded the "gold" medal?
  3. In connection with who should have been in finals this year ......I STILL haven't seen the Fridays selections solos......so not seen your son apart from the coaching session yet CeliB (but I know he's good anyway ) hoping they will be on YouTube very soon. But this year the big thing that was missing for me .....was not seeing any of them in class which has been truly irritating in my opinion! There are so many candidates that I think there will always be some you like who don't get through and others who although still pretty good were a bit surprising. I have found this in previous years at any rate.
  4. You could be right there about the Royal. When Serge Polunin entered (and won it) in 2006 he had already been at the RBS for a couple of years. He stayed on there I believe after winning the Comp but maybe the prize money helped with his final year there? Or he was trying to confirm a place for sure at their Upper school? (He had been at White Lodge since the age of 13) Though having said that I imagine he was on a scholarship already there......but maybe not? I also wonder what would be a "big name" school. When considering schools worldwide that is! Obviously the Royal but on a worldwide stage which others in the UK for example? I wonder if he meant the schools just directly connected to main Companies like the Royal here and ABT in US the HET for Netherlands the Berlin school and Stuttgart school .......just a few of that ilk??
  5. To go back to thewinelakes question of favourite seats at the ROH ..... When I'm feeling flush ......which at the Opera House is less and less these days ...I used to love row A in the stalls Circle ....then backwards from there!! Next would be standing in the stalls circle.....much cheaper great view but fiendishly difficult to get hold of and last year had foot injury so wasn't so keen to stand but better now. Next is front of Amphitheatre rows A-D.....the more central seats that is. Those are the favourites I would have also said back of Stalls but am now completely priced out of this area of ROH
  6. My ticket is C 61 Are these problems happening really on the very side seats of row B then? Recently Ive had a spate of tickets in both Row C ....but also row B going from late 50's to late 60's and although I wouldn't say legroom was exactly brilliant......though once did get the aisle seat in this area which was great. But from here in Row B I haven't had this problem of people leaning over in Row A!! So perhaps if seats more on the side in Row A they can't see very well so lean forward so then Row B can't see?? I must admit I never buy a ticket with any hint of restricted view on it for ballet not even if it was only £1
  7. And here is the first part of that ceremony prize giving starts at 5mins in!!
  8. The quality of above video, not that brill unfortunately
  9. Hope this works it shows Serge Polunin receiving the main prize at the Prix in2006! The young Chinese candidate sorry he is Guo Chengwu did get two prizes indeed so a very talented young man too!
  10. Chengwu Guo won the Contemporary prize......did he also win another scholarship prize then(someone said he came "second" in 2006 Is their an actual video of them receiving their prizes in 2006 as this is definitely not clear on the info part of their website. It would be clear if could see them receive the prizes as the actual "winner" is the last one given out!!
  11. Hmm not as easy to find out as one may think!! On their website for 2006 ....it just lists the prize winners but doesn't say who got the actual medal as such. Will keep trying! Looking at the two videos though of Polunin and Muntagirov would say that on that day in 2006 Polunin was the better dancer I imagine he must have won the medal as they are both similar in age .......sometimes they seem to go for the younger students for the top prize probably something to do with schools wanting final training??
  12. This has just been talked about for this years Prix thread!! There is a separate Contemporary winner. An Audience Prize Then six prizes(scholarship awards) These are announced prize 6 then 5 then 4 and so on the person who gets announced last (no.1) is the main prize winner and gets the actual medal. The main prize winner has the first pick of any schools he/she wants and then down to no6 ......who would have last pick ......But all,of these can still attend the networking day to speak to others who may be interested in them. I agree it can be confusing as often the way it is announced it seems as if all the prize winners are equal.....but they are not quite There are no gold or silver medals as such at the Prix de Lausanne ......that could be for other competitions. Will have a look on their site for 2006........though three amazing names in the same year mentioned above ....all have had chance of brilliant careers if wanted.
  13. That's a good point CeliB. It seems there are a lot of schools and scouts for companies there. If she's serious about it I think she should have a go ....why not. Perhaps we can continue this conversation on Friday Pastel!! Looking forward to seeing your DD dance then too!
  14. I'll make a date in my diary!! We can always go and watch anyway! As it happens M in Sydney has suggested we do it one day.....perhaps we can all go for the week!! My partner will be pleased as he's been fed up with me hovering over the IPad all week!! And nothing else getting done!!
  15. Yes these young dancers have to make decisions on exactly what they most need for themselves at this moment in time. There are bound to be winners and losers on both sides so to speak.
  16. Aileen.....thanks for that info....will tell friends in Sydney as they hope to,be over here this summer!! Something to,look forward to. Pastel.....haven't seen the professional performances of the Prix yet.....as got too busy catching up with the finalists performances but hope to see them during the next week. ......though I'm nearly ballet 'd out I must say!!!
  17. Of course .....that's what the prize is about.....they've already seen him before this anyway. The previous posters were incorrect as have just said!! Just a little bit of sympathy for Tamara re auditioning boys at the moment though. I think the actual company is quite strong for men at the moment and if anything maybe looking more at mo for principal level. Unless of course she had previously said she was interested and then just "forgot him" so to speak(re 404)
  18. And wow again CeliB that they were considering offering 404 (sorry being stupid now) the Het I mean. Great Company!! Ozz friends would love him to go to Queensland of course!! Nowhere near them but friend there who used to work for the Australian Arts Council in connection with Dance thinks that Li is transforming this company and making it much more classical Don't know how often they get to Sydney to perform though. Just thinking ....when was the Australian National company last here in UK?
  19. Yes friends in Sydney told me what his probable preference would be and he spent time there before the Prix but is a long long way from home for 15 year old......can parents get job move!!!! Number 204 Aileen!!
  20. Thanks for that CeliB as the prize winning at the Prix is a bit confusing as they say and here are the scholarship winners and there are six of them but I know from previous years that the last announced going from 6-1 is the winner and get the medal so to speak. What I didn't know is that the first candidate has first pick of schools in that way. Harrison too is very young to be going far away to schools .....like UK etc....and it will be interesting to see what he decides too.....but these youngsters are tough it seems. Your DS was quite young going off to Washington on his own etc CeliB but he seems to have survived it......though I know it must be tough on families not to see their youngsters for so long I think the HET offer because it has school as well and some subsidy in the offer is a good one and not too far away!! I agree about ENBS though......would the training he gets there be better than he currently gets in Washington......probably not so the youth schools like HET and Dresden may offer more opportunities down the line. Anyway no doubt he has to discuss this with his teachers but it is a bit of a minefield I suppose when it comes down to the nitty gritty of choices to suit any particular individual.
  21. It's not that far away from your tickets but very central. Leg room won't be super but it's okay for ballet......there are so many longish intervals to walk around in!
  22. Have just been to website and a ticket in the Amphi that I know is sort of okay in row C was unbelievably available so have just bought it!! But thanks for mentioning yours thewinelake.
  23. Wow CeliB that is completely amazing!! How on earth will he make up his mind!! Having some financial support with the offer must be of help though! Oh well RBS 's great loss at this stage as far as I'm concerned!! ......just shows you they don't always get it right but I suppose they do have some criteria of their own they are going by initially and some dancers turned down initially by them do end up dancing with the Company eventually! Isn't Muntagirov a typical example? Anyway some truly Fab offers there ......more nail biting time!! I do know a bit about what Harrison would like but can't say here of course.
  24. Thanks both of you!! Ive just said on another thread that really anyone who takes part in the Prix .....winner or not....can have a career in Dance if they want it! But candidates do mature at different ages I suppose .......anywaymust have been a brilliant lot that year if Polunin didn't win it!!
