  1. Oh dear, Penelope. The original system always had scenes of milling confusion at the end of a performance, I always hated checking anything in, and avoided if I possibly could.
  2. I would be seriously worried about someone who could not identify a Curly Wurly! I used to love Terry's Chocolate Orange, and am very sad that it has been deemed necessary to "improve" the recipe.
  3. I am perfectly happy with my score of 6/15, given that at least 3 of those answers were pure guesses. Half of those chocolate bars I'd never even heard of, let alone eaten! The best chocolate in the world resides within a box of Bendicks Bittermints. And even better, they are on special offer at the moment.
  4. Apologies if this link has already been posted elsewhere, but this is one actor's response to the various issues we have been complaining about. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-36792702 "I am afraid that if the theatre is going to die of anything it will be from exactly this type of stereotyping and prejudice aimed towards a new and younger generation of theatregoers." So, Mr Harrington believes that, does he? Those of us who would prefer to actually hear the actors on stage are old fogies, living in the past. As far as I am concerned, if anything is going to kill live theatre, it is the regular, long term visitor giving up in despair because they can't stand the noise resulting from that kind of behaviour. And I haven't found it is necessarily the younger generation who are responsible for this. I've sat next to quite a few older people who have slurped, crunched and whispered noisily through performances I have attended. I gave up going to my local cinema years ago because of this. I would hate to think I would have to stop going to certain theatres for the same reason.
  5. Yes, better to laugh than cry.
  6. Oh dear. The chances of my getting a birthday or Christmas trip to the ballet have just been reduced to zero. Unless I go on my own, of course. I remember the days when a top seat in the stalls was less than they are now charging for the Amphi.
  7. Is it possible she is marking her territory in some way? Just a thought.
  8. I agree that the papers should have included pictures of all the winners. Very wrong of them not to do so. I also predicted the winners and the number of sets for both finals, Alison. Serena has looked magnificent over the past fortnight, and although Kerber did her best, and didn't fold, the result was never in doubt in my mind. And once Djokovic and Fed got knocked out, there was no way Andy was going to let that trophy slip away. In fact, I got the impression he wasn't playing flat out in the final; that there was another gear he could have found, if necessary. I actually enjoyed both the finals this year, not something I normally say. Although in the case of the men, I think I would have enjoyed any final that didn't have Murray v Djokovic, which is possibly the worst match up for entertainment value. This final was full of good tennis, and I was surprised to find myself liking the Raonic game. He has clearly worked hard, and there is a great deal more to him than the serve. Did anyone else find it annoying when the commentators kept saying, "Raonic is the first Canadian to get to a final here". No, Eugenie Bouchard was in the final in2014. It is right up there with "Andy Murray is the first person to win Wimbledon since Fred Perry". No, Angela Mortimer, Anne Jones and Virginia Wade all managed to do that. Unless, of course, they don't consider women to be people?
  9. I still don't understand what happened to Federer. However, I thought he looked a little more sluggish this Wimbledon than he usually is, and he wasn't moving as well. I've always said that if Raonic is the future of tennis, then I am going to stop watching. I dislike the Big Booming Unreturnable Ace style of play, never enjoyed watching Sampras for the same reason.
  10. Oh for goodness sake. You know you are getting old when you can remember a time when people went to the theatre to watch the performers. And either ate before, and waited until afterwards for their food and drink.
  11. Only just noticed this. How sad.
  12. Absolutely right, Janet. Been a very long time since I saw the film, but I looked at some images, and that is the one I was thinking of.
  13. That floaty dress reminds me of those baby doll nightdresses they wore in films in the 60s. I think there is a film with someone like Britt Ekland wearing one? I don't dislike it. I think all the white outfits look rather nice, and certainly present an air of calmness, which is a relief after the herd of zebra that thundered across the French Open Courts. (Edited to add what is the plural of zebra? In my mind I think of it the same way as sheep, but i've got a feeling it might be zebras)
  14. How come you have got CC tickets twice in one week, and I haven't managed anything.
  15. Thoroughly enjoyed the Willis match yesterday. It could easily have been a 3 set whitewash by Federer, but although Willis was overawed in the first set, he pulled himself together later on. The result was as expected, but there were some entertaining shots and rallies, and Feddie had to do a bit more than just stand there and watch Marcus lose.
  16. Yes, I watched Willis match too. Wonderful to watch him, he looked so joyful.
  17. Posted on a Monday, I know, but: This weekend I: 1) Cleaned the house from top to bottom, and did all the laundry and ironing. 2) Completed all oustanding paperwork and filing 3) Did a fortnight's worth of shopping. 4) Told all my friends that I was only available for communication before midday. Yes, I am ready for Wimbledon. Have I forgotten anything?
  18. If this is done, it would be helpful if the moderators could explain why threads have been locked or removed. What one person deems to be a political comment might simply be seen as a general remark by another person. Likewise something removed for other reasons e.g for being sexist, racist or whatever. I hope this forum doesn't become too politicially correct. Sorry to take it off topic.....
  19. Apart from Sylvie's approach to the choreography, I wonder if part of the problem is the very different physique that she had, compared to the dancers who inspired Ashton? I am not thinking so much about her height, but the fact that she seemed to have a short torso and long limbs. The generation of dancers with the RB in Ashton's day seemed to have different proportions, without that ultra leggy look, so that there was less emphasis on the legs and more on the whole body. If that makes sense?
  20. Yes, I did see that about Willis, Alison. What struck me is that he is still playing at the age of 25, when he is ranked 700 and something in the world. I don't know much about him, but that is quite old to be stuck down in the lowest ranks and playing in the Futures tournaments. I don't know what the prize money is like for those, but he must be struggling to cover his costs.
  21. I like Bouchard, but I have always enjoyed watching Radwanska play. An intelligent player, who has a great ability to adapt to any situation, and does not rely on brute strength to win. And neither of those players grunt, either. Always a plus in my book.Actually there has been a distinct lack of grunting at Eastbourne (at least from the matches I have seen so far.) I was watching Konta v Kvitova on the red button, but the BBC seems to have developed a technical problem, and I am staring at a fixed screen. Funny, these things don't seem to happen when the men are playing.

    EU Referendum

I was a bit nervous about posting for that reason, but I think the link I showed takes an academic view, not a political one? I would add that I have no interest in politics, and am certainly not posting as part of any campaign. Melody, I've also seen the John Oliver clip, and it is very funny.
  23. Very true, Janet. I have been going to the ballet since I was about 5, and there are always going to be certain dancers who do nothing for me. However, I think I can say that of the current crop of ladies, I can't think of a single one who doesn't deserve their place at the top. I haven't seen either Hayward or Takada in much yet, so I look forward to their future performances with great enthusiasm

    EU Referendum

For those of you like myself who are still thoroughly bemused by the whole issue, listen to the short lecture by Professor Michael Dougan, a professor of European Law at Liverpool Uni. It is not my intention to start a political thread, but I hope everyone else who is voting this week finds it as interesting and informative as I did.
  25. I am just musing again here, but are the dancers themselves told why they haven't been promoted? Perhaps this is why Melissa Hamilton took a transfer to another company? Regarding Miss Hamilton, personally, I didn't think she was principal material - at least, not as far as the RB was concerned. I saw her in several purely classical solo roles, and thought she wasn't as good as some of the others. The style didn't seem to suit her. Just my own personal opinion, of course.
