  1. The writer of the said Independent's article just shows how ill informed he/she is. Such empty statements!
  2. On p16 and p17 of "A True Heritage: the story of The Royal Ballet School and Companies" you should find all the info you need. I purchased the booklet when I visited White Lodge Museum last year. I don't know if it is for sale anywhere else. It says the School remained at Sadler's Wells Theatre during the 1939 -1945 war years. The New Theatre was the war-time home of the Sadler's Wells Ballet Company.Apart from a few months in 1941, when the School was evacuated to Tring, and then Holland Park (in premises provided by The Royal Academy of Dance), it continued to function at "the Wells".
  3. http://www.dancetabs.com/2012/06/an-intimate-evening-with-anna-pavlova-london/ A review by Jann Parry.
  4. I read somewhere (can't remember where) that ALL Company dancers were involved and all would perform in Metamorphosis?
  5. All the Solos were of course completely new to me so I hope someone with much more knowledge will comment on the event! The evening started with Anthony Dowell (Fokine) teaching a young Anna Pavlova (Yasmine Naghdi) the "Dying Swan". Romany Pajdak danced "Spanish Dance from The Fairy Doll" beautifully. Old film material was projected on a screen in between the Solos and the "Dumb Girl" illustrated to me what a real artist Pavlova was! "Foyer de Danse" showed us a Degas scene with six women at the barre and "Pavlova"(Yasmine) arriving late for class. Jonathan Howells (Cecchetti) takes her under his wing and starts teaching her his method.... Several Solos followed and "Autumn Leaves" closed the evening. IMO the role of "The Chrysanthemum" was miscast. I'd rather seen someone in this role reminding me of Anna Pavlova... I would have left on a real high.
  6. They seem to be very short on Principals (or Soloists) who could dance the role of Princess Rose?
  7. I very much enjoyed last night's Double Bill. I thought the Company was superb in Ballo della Regina, so beautifully danced. To watch Alina and Johan dance together in La Sylphide was such a privilege. I really loved Emma Maguire's "Effie", the role suited her so well. I was also impressed by the lightness of dancing by the Lead Sylph Yasmine Naghdi (her penchee!). She looked so ethereal. Balanchine and Bournonville made a handsome pair LOVED IT!
  8. Steven is a very intelligent and wonderful dancer. I am a great admirer. Wasn't he once told he would never become a Principal (because he was too short)? About his so-called showing-off: if he was Russian it would be admired. It's not a Russian prerogative!
  9. Clement Crisp said he is the second best James he has ever seen (never heard of his first choice) I recall reading Erik Bruhn was his first choice (but anybody correct me if wrong!)
  10. If that's the case, I am wondering... who is not able to dance this role and will be "replaced"?
  11. Johna Kobborg has spread the joy around when he did the casting, providing us with an interesting mix of debuts and experience, often at the same performance. Can't say any of the dancers have let him down, that's for sure. Indeed Johan did spread joy around when casting, giving deserved opportunities to several of the younger dancers. It's so refreshing! I like the "unpredictability" of whom we'll get to see in a new role (usually we can predict who will get what...)
  12. There is very little information on the ROH website about this event, taking place on Sunday 17th June. Does anybody know who is performing and what will be shown?
  13. It is indeed a PERFECT production showing the RB at it's very best and every dancer gave it their all. A gem that should be screened worldwide I think. I am so much looking forward to watching Alina and Johan on 12th June.
  14. I have seen the Steven/Alina, Rojo/Trzensimiech and Steven/Roberta cast in "La Sylphide". Steven is simply amazing what more can I say! I also loved Dawid who made the most of this deserved opportunity but Steven is a hard act to follow. Alina IMO is THE "Sylph". Of the three Effie's I saw, Emma MacGuire stood out. It is more of a mime role and she did it beautifully. Of the three casts of "First Sylph"'s, it was Yasmine Naghdi whom I felt was the only one succeeding in portraying the lightness of a Sylph. She did not dance as a Sylph but was a Sylph. I also adored Valentino as Gurn and his jumps were a joy to watch. Alexander Campell danced this role last night with much gusto but I prefer Valentino's stage presence. About Ballo: Marianella, as always, was really stunning (IMO it didn't suit Laura Morera very well but she took over from an injured Lauren Cuthbertson at short notice.) Of the four Soloists it was Yuhui Choe who completely stole the show. Amongst the Corps dancers, one or two stood out for me but one in particular showed great lyrical precision in her steps and overall clarity of movement. All in all I enjoyed this Double Bill very much. There is such great - and some amazing - talent in the Company.
  15. Ballo della Regina superbly danced by the whole cast. I love that Ballet (if only ROH would bother naming all the dancers on the cast sheet!). Kristin McNally as Madge was simply amazing. Claire Calvert (First Sylph) together with Yasmine Naghdi and Beatrix Stix Brunell (Two Sylphs) gave us some lovely dancing.I am really looking forward to watching the other casts: Cojocaru/McRae with Melissa Hamilton (1st Sylph) on Monday and Rojo/Dawid with Yasmine Naghdi (1st Sylph) on Tuesday.
  16. She also needs to be careful not to upset Daria to whom Vadim is very loyal (and rightly so). This had crossed my mind too and I hope Tamara will be mindful indeed!
  17. I too noticed the lack of dancer information: only the principals are even listed. I'm hoping that will follow along shortly. I am very annoyed by that too! I want to know whom I'll be watching when booking. I hope ROH very quickly sorts this out.
  18. Sure Aileen, didn't think so at all. She is indeed young. She sparked my first interest after I watched her fabulous performance in "Concerto" at the BRB Gala (she was still a student). I hadn't seen her dance much until I saw her "Peaseblossom" a few months ago and I loved her dancing in true Ashton style. This was followed by her "Polyphonia" Solo and pdd at the General and again she impressed me greatly. I do hope all goes well for her performance tomorrow, same for James, and that she'll be fully back to her usual self
  19. I was at Stage Door last night and briefly spoke with her. She said she hadn't danced it since the General a week ago. A week in between must be a long time for them (perhaps not for an experienced Principal or Soloist). She will dance it tomorrow and also on 23rd and it will be interesting to see if again she makes the role her own just as she did at the General. I agree with Bluebird that she was breathtaking at the General. That's why I was so impressed knowing she is "only" an Artist. Her nerves must have taken over.
  20. Brian Maloney was simply amazing last night, and knowing he took over at such short notice (and never danced McGregor) is even more impressive! I was thinking, after watching last night's Triple Bill, how The Royal Ballet really must be a dream company for dancers. Take "Polyphonia" for example where you can watch an Artist (Yasmine Naghdi) dancing alongside a Soloist (Samantha Raine), a 1st Soloist (Yuhui Choe) and a Principal (Sarah Lamb). All four ballerinas are at different levels of experience and status in the Company. It really amazed me how beautiful as a young Artist she danced her solo and pdd, with her partner James Hay, alongside the very experienced Principal Lamb, and also Choe and Raine. Naghdi really lived up to the high level of dancing required to perform "Polyphonia". I loved Leanne Cope's performance in "Sweet Violets" (I would love to see her as "Juliet"!) and Marianella was stunning, Bennett Gartside is a new favourite of mine, and I particularly adored Steven and Edward in Carbon Life. "Sweet Violets" has a lot of potential for developing into a remarkable full-length Ballet, and given time it will. "Carbon Life" to me was superbly danced by all the dancers but for me it represents mere entertainment, not Ballet. All in all a very enjoyable evening!
