  1. The discounts begin : The Mikhailovsky Ballet - London Theatre Direct Book official tickets for "The Mikhailovsky Ballet" showing at the London Coliseum, London. The Mikhailovsky Ballet tickets are now available at discounted rates ... www.londontheatredirect.com/.../The-Mikhailovsky-Ballet-tic...
  2. Goodness you don't have to be able to paint to appreciate art or to know the the technique of ballet to gain enjoyment from watching it. There are several technique books and dictionaries of ballet terms and I am sure you will find some DVDs of ballet classes. On You Tube you can also find classes for different age groups so you can see how the exercises progress. Good luck.
  3. It is nice to get to the bar - or the pub across the road (lower prices) - and go to the loo perhaps wander round front of house have a chat and dancers need a break- it is the time the show ends to get to the car or train home which is perhaps more important than if the interval is 20 or 30 mins. Yes theatres want the audience to buy drinks etc but audiences should not resent spending money on it after all we are lucky our recreational activity ( unlike many other peoples) is so often supported in part by many people who have no interest in it - taxpayers. Enjoy your nights out to the full or else why bother.
  4. hope they come but with the rumours about various matters and now the police raid it must be a worry for them. http://www.itar-tass.com/c21/630154.html
  5. Taxpayer funded business is our business and to be a professional ballet dancer requires a great commitment so they deserve high pay especially to help them set up in a new business when they retire. Yes annuity rates are very low so none can live off whatever they have saved by the age of 35- unlike many sports persons.
  6. sending out flyers to the local schools seems such an obvious marketing thing to do it is a surprise they are not doing it....but sadly not many ballet schools seem to do group bookings but .sr perhaps they have tried it and found it didn't generate sales ..did you see the full page ad for enb in Time Out it did not mention any of their shows or indeed their website seems like a waste of advertising budget perhaps they have a new agency which just wants to promote the name English National Ballet as though that alone will build brand awareness and sell seats.
  7. "Russian" in itself is not a badge of high quality ..if only we had enough British dancers to have a great British company without the need for the wonderful foreigh artists - as the French do.
  8. A wonderful ballet - though not so popular with the public..ENB couldn't tour it and fill a theatre for example
  9. Most dancers have no appeal to the public beyond their art ballet - if they want to reach out they might benefit by having an agent.
  10. If we are looking at "new models" it is fair to ask What is subsidy for ? To support the recreational activity of the audience? To enable the creation of artistic work that would not otherwise be made? To support British jobs? What is the demand for ENB from the taxpayer? ENB do not frequently perform to sell out venues - is the rebrand going to change this? I am lucky that my ballet going is supported by the taxpayer unlike people who like watching some sports example but I also see high quality work from visiting companies who are not a charge on the taxpayer at sometimes lower seat prices. Non subsidised companies seem to have far fewer admin staff. ENB productions are never broadcast or available on DVD nor is there a demand from foreign countires that they should tour.
  11. Which foreign ballet company comes to the Uk to loose money or spend the money of it's own taxpayers? ENB (run as a charity - major donor the taxpayer) doesn't know how much it's rebrand cost ! http://www.thirdsector.co.uk/go/news/article/1167435/english-national-ballet-unveils-new-logo-website/
  12. ENB don't know how much the reband cost - only a taxpayer funded organisation would do that ! : http://www.thirdsector.co.uk/go/news/article/1167435/english-national-ballet-unveils-new-logo-website/
  13. If they had to sell the tickets because the subsidy was less perhaps they would make the same effort as non subsidised companies or visiting companies who have to sell tickets to survive - more sense than spending money on "rebranding"
  14. How much did the reband cost and how many more people will want to see ENB because of it ? Still it is only taxpayers money....
  15. There are many ballet companies that visit from overseas without a penny of taxpayer subsidy. Perhaps they should involve those in the commercial side - UK ballet promoters etc in helping the publicly fuinded companies. Whenever taxpayer money is available the need to sell tickets is less important than seeking grants and filling in information about access etc. Venue staff are paid by the local council or the venue and are all too often lazy having little interest in the visiting companies who pay the hire or indeed serving the public as hfbrew suggest above......it is down to the promoter to get the audience.
  16. perhaps giving attention to the training issue would be good long term ....after all funding is perhaps in part supposed to support jobs for British people not to give foreign artists a better lifestyle by working here than in their own countries. ENB has had a school for many years but seems to attract foreign students (who can pay) and foreign teachers. Why not try to raise the standards here if they are not high enough....after all huge numbers of British children go to dance classes and there is no shortage of British ballet teachers. Nothing is too good for the taxpayer so it is wonderful to have world class artists but less time on getting them and visas and more on supporting home grown talent would have been a more welcome pronouncement in making London greater.....and how much has the rebranding cost?
  17. When did Firebird get a tutu? i.e. not like the original designs - just a matter of interest if anyone knows.
  18. Mikhailovsky London visit sounds promising if it all happens - Angela's post in the news from Germany makes it seem as if they are going to have some other managment changes. I will buy a ticket on the day there will probably be some late offers.
  19. Were you involved with that Ballet Holiday ? I believe V&O did not dance with them in Vancover and the review was that the theatre was half full - or half empty depending on your point of view : http://www.straight.com/arts/mikhailovskys-polished-swan-lake-takes-flight-world-class-ballerina Who is their agent or presenting them in London?
  20. These are such good value - Bolshoi Bayadere should be good there are some good productions on the internet too....you get a better view than if you are in many of the seats at the theatre.
  21. That may be a reason they gave but the company are more than 2 dancers and a corps. It is the art that interests me but I don't want to be let down or have to get ticket refunds because they are in a financial and administrative mess. It is good the way more companies are putting their performances on the web
  22. Good photos it is a pity you can't buy production photos from the ROH shop and people don't produce ballet annuals anymore.
  23. They cancelled New York and did not do their promised tour of China so let's just wait and see.
