Be aware that this process takes 12-18 months even if clearly eligible (with an Irish parent or grand parent) - longer in the current pandemic. We have already been asked about what passport DC holds by a company before they were even willing to view the submission.

Spare a thought too for those who graduated last year who have had essentially 2 audition seasons decimated. Many of them have already had a year of ‘waiting’.

Watching the first programme of the new series, it has been announced that the winner will be commissioned to create a portrait of Carlos Acosta to be displayed in the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery.

From our experience of ‘live’ auditions, from associates to companies, quick decisions are made in those situations too as to who is of interest and who not and candidates can be ‘dismissed’ and given very little/no attention after just a few minutes. At least via zoom/video submission you are blissfully unaware! It’s not ideal I know but I’m sure they will see what they need to see in order to make their decision which is going to be very largely based on physical attributes and facility. (And that’s a whole new or rather age old debate...)

They will then be treated to two solos by Birmingham Royal Ballet’s professional dancers, The Dying Swan and Liebestod. The Dying Swan, will be performed by First Artist Alys Shee. This poignant piece, set to Camille Saint-Saëns' Le Cygne from Le Carnaval des animaux, was originally choreographed by Mikhail Fokine for legendary ballerina Anna Pavlova. Liebestod, will be danced by Principal Brandon Lawrence. Accompanied by powerful music from Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde, Brandon will dance choreographer Valery Panov's emotive solo piece.

Apologies Jan but as parent of an Elmhurst graduate I can confidently state they were not seen. Obviously the pandemic impacted upon the opportunity to be seen but we heard about the RBS contracts being awarded quite a while before lockdown. The annual apprenticeship was also not awarded this year.

This is correct and just as it should be but surely the Elmhurst graduates could have at least been seen?

Mr Bintley was a frequent visitor to school - he attended summer shows, graduate showcases, Gala evenings, appraisals, choreography, solos and other ‘friends’ events (often as an adjudicator) and prize giving ceremonies as well as being very actively involved in working with the students on performance pieces. This continued beyond his retirement from BRB. Since his announcement as new AD of BRB over a year ago, Mr Acosta has been into school twice - once to last year’s summer show gala evening and once to an event for the Patron HRH The Duchess of Cornwall. Whilst I am fully aware that Covid-19 has impacted upon opportunities for him to engage, this is nevertheless worrying, especially for the graduates. Contracts have been awarded to graduates from the RBS to BRB whilst Elmhurst’s own graduates have not been seen by Mr Acosta either in class or during their pre Covid graduate showcase. Whilst the two Royal companies may have parity, the two associated schools do not.
