My student is applying for the Yorkshire Ballet Seminars Summer Residential this year. She is attending the scholarship audition in November. Can anyone tell me from last year how long the results took to come out? I ask because if she gets a YBS scholarship, she won't apply for the RBS Summer Intensive, but the deadline for RBS applications is 19th December...

@vee I can’t help I’m afraid. My pupil is in Year 7 at Elmhurst and whilst she knows she’ll be too tall, none of her smaller friends have heard anything either and I haven’t seen any excited posts on social media. Very mysterious.

@Adagio123They started in November and final auditions ended at the end of March. If you have any questions about the process at Elmhurst, Moorland, RBS, Tring or YDA I should be able to answer them and would be glad to.

They have great teachers, often from the Paris Opera Company and School.

I remember learning by redoing it when it had just come out of a bun and so went back into a ponytail and then a bun more easily because the hair was already trained in the right directions if that makes sense?!

@SJBalletI know it must be distressing and worrying for you, but I think her response shows a certain level of emotional maturity and is healthy; she’s thinking ahead and expressing what a huge undertaking it is, rather than bottling it up or simply not thinking about it. On the flip side, I am a little concerned that when I asked my pupil if there was anything she was concerned about her answer was, “What happens if I run out of toothpaste in the middle of the week?!” 🤣🤷🏻‍♀️ I mean, if that’s all she has to worry about, great, but to me, it disclosed that she doesn’t really know what’s coming…

Camille is gentle and nurturing, whilst also realistic and no-nonsense. This was a perfect combination for my pupil! She gives very holistic training and the regular, detailed feedback is unique and very valuable. My pupil has gained so much from her programme and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to other students. For us, the only downside was the timings of the in-person masterclasses which always seemed to clash with other commitments and also weren’t with Camille very often; she used Royal Ballet colleagues which of course, is an experience in itself but not the same or as useful as having your regular teacher who knows you.

I was surprised too! As her teacher, I asked, expecting no response but got a phone call!

@BallerinamamaWhilst the RBS does seem extremely preoccupied with flat turn-out (my pupil is a couple of degrees off and I was told this was why she wasn’t offered White Lodge finals) she was offered MAs in the first round of offers, and her box splits are good, but not flat. In fact she said hers were the “worst” in the room except for the boys, yet only four girls in her MA class received offers from RBS (two for WL and two for MAs) so it can’t be a deal-breaker.

Stand facing the front, side and back

Pliés, tendus, relevés and grands battements in 4 counts at the barre

Sautés in 1st, changements, galops, spring points and temps levés (hops)

Arabesque

Improvisation (this year, they had to be an Autumn leaf)

Hamstring stretch, cobra, side splits

A reverence

So more of a normal ballet class than the JA audition.

I recommend you read this thread. It will give you a very good idea of the up and downsides. Let her do JAs though, no matter what your decision. It’s an extraordinary achievement and she’ll gain so much from it, not only in terms of her ballet training, but discipline, time-management, focus, self-confidence, dealing with constructive criticism, presenting herself respectfully and confidently… The list goes on!

@ElzI wish I could give you an answer to your questions which would be easier to accept but I honestly think the difference was the person watching the video (since that’s how her Year 5 and 6 auditions were held). There were only six months between the two video submissions and I honestly couldn’t see that there was enough of a difference between them to jump from a straight no to a straight yes! 🤷🏻‍♀️ My pupil’s physique, dance quality and musicality were what JAs would look for all along. Her training had remained the same throughout the process, but obviously she was stronger and more accomplished by Year 5 compared to Year 3. Whatever the reason, it was for the best. She really realised how special her place was and how much she needed to make the most of it. Her JA teacher even chose her to demonstrate for her at a special event, having had some of the others since Year 4! I truly think it’s a case of right person, right place, right time sometimes and I really hope your DC has success in the future.

To all the nos... My pupil was a straight no for Year 4 and 5, then a straight yes for Year 6 and she's now off to vocational school in September, having been offered four out of the five she applied to, and RBS MAs. Don't give up hope. There are different paths, and I do believe that everything happens for a reason.

Last year, we heard on 16th June, so tomorrow. Sometimes, the results do come out before they said, but just as frequently they come out afterwards or exactly on time! It's impossible to second-guess and I know how all-consuming the wait is, but try to enjoy the blissful ignorance of not knowing for as long as possible!

@dancecrazy1if she were to end up at Eastleigh, she’d be a lucky girl. Miss Cooper is absolutely wonderful and the atmosphere there is truly unique.

If you would like to, send me a private message with your child's age group and which sections she's dancing in and we'll keep our eyes open for you 🙂 It's also my students' first regional finals, and my first as a teacher rather than a volunteer, so you'll be in good company!
