  1. Having dug up the season announcement from several months ago, it looks like all the casting is still the same as in that. I wonder why neither Takahashi nor Kase have any performances? Maybe one of them will end up with the two TBC dates but at the moment it seems a bit odd to have a guesting Odette/Odile yet not have any performances assigned to 2 of the 5 female Principals.
  2. I hope Campbell's got decent roles in the rest of the summer works to make up for no SL yet again. More generally, it does seem a bit odd that a First Soloist has got more SL performances than several of the Principals. I wonder if the June dates with Takada might have originally been meant for McRae but he won't be recovered in time?
  3. Thanks. That video's already on my need-to-get-round-to-watching list! Though as Dowell is about 80 now I guess he may have shrunk a little from when he was dancing.
  4. I now feel like emailing ENB asking if they could pass a message on to Johan Inger that ticket sales will be down by one if he doesn't select Frola for Don Jose! 😉
  5. Thanks. I'll look it up. I found when watching Eurosport online for the last couple of years that they showed absolutely everyone. I was slogging through 20-30 hours of coverage per championship! I find the main downside of watching things on Youtube is it's either a little screen or I have to have it on full screen, whereas watching Europort/Discovery+ online I can have a decent sized but not full screen.
  6. May I ask how tall Dowell was when he was dancing? I had vaguely assumed that he was fairly tall but it sounds like I'm wrong.
  7. I'm interested to hear that it's being done that way around. I would have assumed that the casting was done first & then the dancers were taught the work, with changes to the intended cast only made if there was some major issue during rehearsals. Presumably it must be done that way round for pieces when casting is announced months in advance? It seems unlikely that, for instance, ENB had already started rehearsing Swan Lake for June back in the autumn when that casting was announced.
  8. The last time I saw her in a lead role was Juliet 2 years ago, unless you count half of Swan Lake Act I a few months later. There are too many pairings I want to see too - and the problem is I'll be trying to get rush tickets for all of them! (Dreading next week's rush as I've realised I'll be trying to get tickets for 2 different performances & that probably won't work.)
  9. I succumbed to temptation & picked up a rush ticket for Cuthbertson/Ball on Wednesday. I entirely blame Forum members' comments, both in writing & in person, for this!
  10. I've now listened to both pieces and they're definitely not as serialist or hard to listen to as I thought they would be. I preferred the Schoenberg to the Webern, which is fortunate given the former is 3 times the length of the latter. Are they used each complete one after the other in the ballet or are parts from each intercut? I've also listened to Danses Concertants, after being unpleasantly surprised by Les Noces at ENB's triple bill earlier this season, and that sounds alright to my ears too. So at least I don't have to worry about any of the music in the upcoming triple bill.
  11. I looked up the music & found it wasn't Berg, but both Schoenberg & Webern are also serialist composers & serialism is generally not to my taste. I should get round to looking up the specific pieces & see if they're on YouTube or somewhere like that to listen to in advance. While I don't know what the choreographic requirements are for Woyzeck, in terms of the personality of the character in the opera then I'd agree that the RB's Woyzeck casting is not what I was expecting.
  12. It's particularly annoying me that you now have to select an out train before it lets you see any of the return options.
  13. Different Drummer is certainly the one I am most apprehensive about, particularly the music.
  14. While it's is unlikely to affect anyone's theatregoing, I've noticed this on the National Rail website https://www.nationalrail.co.uk/service-disruptions/xc-ia-20240123/ I thought the RMT was supposed to have stopped striking after coming to an agreement so it's disappointing to see it's having another strike, albeit a localised one. Edit: Oh, I see the RMT is also striking on the London Overground so it seems the apparent agreement definitely isn't working. https://www.nationalrail.co.uk/service-disruptions/lo-industrial-action-20240131/
  15. Right now I'd find it more useful if they would announce the Carmen casting so I know if I have to go & see it or not. Now the MacMillan triple bill casting is out I'll be seeing that at least once, & quite likely twice, plus one SL during the time Carmen is running so those 10 days are getting rather crowded.
  16. I did wonder when I first saw the Des Grieux & Lescaut casting if the height difference would be a bit of an issue! (I'm not seeing the cinecast until Monday to see for myself though.)
  17. Yes, I found that when I checked the date. However I thought I'd be able to catch up but Discovery+ doesn't have 2024, despite still having e.g. the 2023 worlds available to watch again, so I'm wondering if they no longer have the ice skating rights for the UK.
  18. @Emeralds I've never seen any of the 3 pieces so I don't know what their exact casting requirements are. I just thought that on purely numerical terms it seems pretty good to be able to see 14 of the RB's 19 Principals over a couple of performances, considering it would take 6 or 7 Manon performances to be able to see that many!
  19. There will be between 6 and 8 Principals appearing in each performance of the MacMillan triple bill though: 8 on the first night, 6 on the last night, and 7 at each of the other performances, adding up to 14 of the 19 Principals in total (hope I've counted everyone correctly).
  20. On the more general subject of ice skating, may I ask where people are watching it this year? It occurred to me that the European championships should have taken place by now so I had a look on Discovery+ (which I had to subscribe to instead of Eurosport starting from last year) only to find they only have past programmes from 2023, nothing from 2024. So does anyone know where 2024 ice skating is being shown if it's not Eurosport/Discovery+?
  21. Oops, I didn't notice that when I posted the below. So actually to see absolutely everyone you'd have to see 27th March with either 4th or 9th April.
  22. Two, if you pair either the 20th March with 13th April or 27th March with either 4th or 9th April. I'm slightly surprised that it's the "less starry" casts for Dances Concertantes & Different Drummer that are getting the cinema relay.
  23. Given Roberto Bolle is about to dance Des Grieux at 48, I'm not sure any of the current RB Principals could be counted out of the next run of Manon on the grounds of age, as they will all still be younger than that in 3-4 years time! In fact after seeing Acosta do the bedroom pdd last summer I wouldn't have been entirely surprised if he'd come back to do Des Grieux at 50! In terms of role opportunities it's the Lescauts this run that I find slightly disappointing, with only the one role debut, for Sissens. There are several other dancers who I would have liked to have seen trying the role. When Hirano replaced McRae was Des Griuex perhaps he could have dropped one of his two sets of Lescaut performances & a debuting dancer get that opportunity? (I know Hirano ended up not dancing his first Lescaut but that was at fairly short notice so presumably unplanned illness or injury & no time to rehearse anyone new.) Actually in terms of replacements, when Takada was announced as not dancing Manon I thought it was a bit of a shame, as it was a fairly long notice period, that neither Magri nor O'Sullivan were given the opportunity to debut. Though perhaps it wasn't possible in terms of dates for Magri, as her first SL performance falls between Takada's two Manons, and I suppose as O'Sullivan was debuting the Mistress two debuts might have been considered too much. Just some thinking out loud.
  24. Some of you may recall my posting in the RB Nutcracker thread in December that I went to a performance with a friend who was seeing The Nutcracker for the first time. Afterwards I suggested to him that he go to see Manon, as it's such a contrast to The Nutcracker & together they show the RB's range in classical ballet. He decided to take up my suggestion & went to this afternoon's performance. I'm very pleased - and relieved! - that he really enjoyed it. He has written a review on his blog if anyone is interested https://www.theatremonkey.com/blog/2024/february/manon-royal-opera-house-covent-garden
  25. I'm satisfied with having seen them the once. There are too many other casts I hope to be able to see, rush tickets permitting, for me to double up on any casts. Although I'm hoping that tomorrow night/Sunday morning I won't be reading loads of posts from people who are seeing both their performances saying that their 2nd performance was way better than their 1st one!
