Empower In Motion

A Ballet Inclusive

Combining well-known classical repertoire and original contemporary styles of inclusive movement, this gala brings together disabled and non-disabled dancers to tell a moving and inspiring story of unity, resilience and the transformative power of art.

A world premiere – Maria Kochetkova & Daniil Simkin
Le Corsaire – Daniil Simkin & Yaoqian Shang
Sleepwalker – Joseph Powell-Main & Hannah Rudd
Giselle – Sangeun Lee & Gareth Haw
Tight Textures and Unplugged – Stopgap
Ode to a love lost – The Royal Ballet School
Reunion – Alice Bellini & icandance
Romeo and Juliet – National Youth Ballet All In!
Snow Queen – Propel Dance
Passionately Defiant – Joseph Powell-Main

Featuring a cast of extraordinary dancers. International superstars Daniil Simkin & Maria Kochetkova will be headlining the show performing a world premiere choreographed by International Dancer and Choreographer Sebastian Kloborg. Daniil Simkin will also partner with Birmingham Royal Ballet Principal Yaoqian Shang for the first time in ‘Le Corsaire’.

We are delighted to have Stopgap Dance Companyperforming two excerpts titled Tight Textures, an ensemble piece and Unplugged, a solo performance.

The further involvement with other organisations includes icandance, Parable Dance’s and National Youth Ballet’s All In! company, which is another area of inclusive dance that we are so proud to be showcasing. Through their mesmerising performances of ‘Reunion’ and ‘Romeo and Juliet’, the show challenges the limitless potential of the human spirit.

Sangeun Lee and Gareth Haw, superstars of the English National Ballet will perform excerpts from the much loved ‘Giselle’. Also from English National Ballet Alice Bellini, Dance Artist Hannah Rudd, The Royal Ballet School and other highly established dancers will join forces with remarkable disabled dancers, including Professional Disabled Dancer Joe Powell-Main. Empower In Motion is not just a dance performance; it is a call to action. Throughout the show, audiences will be introduced to the numerous organisations that work tirelessly to support inclusive dance across Britain. Representatives from these organisations will share their stories and initiatives, shedding light on the transformative impact of their work.

All proceeds raised on the night will be donated to Children Today Charitable Trust as part of their 30th anniversary celebrations. Children Today provide specialised equipment and care for families across the country that help them to thrive, not just survive.

Thanks, Fiona.  I wonder why we hadn't heard of this one before? (including that I was on the SW website the other day looking at upcoming events and didn't spot this one).

Yes I wondered why it hadn’t appeared here.

Sadler’s seem to differentiate between events that they ‘partner’ and those where the event has (I assume) only hired the venue.   They don’t appear automatically in the home page.  That applies to Alina Cojocaru’s ‘La Strada’ too

If you click on What’s On then the page refreshes to show all events.

Drives me nuts!

A great cause! A fun and diverse lineup of dancers - I think it's safe to say they usually don't perform on the same bill.  😉 It will be lovely to see Yaoqian Shang in Le Corsaire pas de deux for the first time and with a new partner, interesting to see what new piece Sebastian Kloborg has come up with for Maria and Daniil, and Sangeun and Gareth are fast becoming favourites on the London dance scene. It's on a Wednesday- not usually a day I can do but I'll find out if I can skip out to see this, even if I have to leave a bit earlier. Well done to Henry Dowden and Ross Freddie Ray for organising it!

A number of the tickets in the Second Circle which were originally £25 each are now £15 each. Not sure if the £25 was an error on the website or if they've been discounted by the organisers to encourage more people to be able to attend.

Daniil Simkin has posted a short video of rehearsal clips from the new piece that Sebastian Kloborg has created for him and Maria Kochetkova. It's certainly quirky and original! 😃

Unfortunately this event clashes with the only public Swan Lake with Cesar Corrales & Mayara Magri at the ROH.

Thought this would be on 7th February while the swan lake is on 7th March?

Getting your 7s mixed up!  The gala is 7th February and Cesar and Mayara are scheduled to dance their public Swan Lake on March 7th.

Oops so I am. Apologies.

7th Feb is Natalia Osipova/Reece Clarke in Manon. Sometimes I’d like to clone myself.

The Children Today charity have posted an update on their social media that dancers from Birmingham Royal Ballet will be performing Interlinked at the gala- a wonderful surprise!

Sangeun Lee and Garerh Haw don't appear to be on the programme any more, but Maria Kochetkova and Daniil Simkin still are, as are Yaoqian Shang and Daniil Simkin in the Le Corsaire pas de deux (he is spectacular in that and it will be brilliant to see Shang in that- I believe it will be her first time dancing Corsaire in London?)

Students from the Royal Ballet School will also be performing.

Hmm I’m not sure the charity have used the right poster … originally Giselle with Haw & Lee were not in the gala.  They were a later addition.

I hope there hasn’t been a last minute change.  I really wanted to see this duo in Giselle.

Sangeun Lee posted only 2 days ago saying she was looking forward to this gala https://www.instagram.com/p/C22YrlZIupb/?igsh=aWU5ODA5dHUzNG8z

Yes, I was puzzling about the timing of the Charity's announcement- theirs was about 36 hours after Sangeun's post on Instagram. I don't follow Instagram but I was a bit puzzled about the switch, so I tried to see if Sangeun or Gareth had posted anything to say they weren't dancing after all. (I hope they're not injured.) I couldn't scroll down any further as I'm not signed up to Instagram. Is there any chance you could ask her or Gareth on Instagram, @FionaM? They or  BRB would be good (I haven't seen their Giselle or Interlinked either)....Both them plus BRB even better. 😀 Or maybe Henry Dowden might know? Ooh, a mystery.....

Lee and Haw are dancing abroad tonight so they’re obviously not injured.

It must be, as @FionaM suggests, that an earlier version of the poster has been used in error.

That's great- thanks for checking that, @capybara! Wow, they must be made of  hardy stuff- two shows in different countries in 48 hours! Impressive.

Sangeun Lee and Gareth Haw are definitely dancing in this gala ("Giselle" Act 2 pas de deux).  Shiori Kase will now replace Yaoqian Shang in the 'Corsaire' pas de deux as Shang is no longer able to participate.  (Henry Dowden has just posted this change of cast on Instagram.)

Danill Simkin is in both galas too.

He’s an itinerant freelancer now whereas Lee and Haw are ENB company members. That probably makes a difference in terms of accepting gala invitations.
