The Big Give - ballet and dance - 2023

Recommended Posts

Birmingham Royal Ballet:

Your donations are doubled with The Big Give!

You can double your donation to support the restoration of Sir Peter Wright’s The Sleeping Beauty through this year’s Big Give Campaign. All donations made from 28 November to 5 December will be doubled through The Big Give, up to £49,000. Your support will help us restore the wonderful costumes of Sir Peter Wright’s beautiful production of The Sleeping Beauty – a jewel in the crown of Birmingham Royal Ballet’s repertoire. The costumes are nearly 40 years old – and are in urgent need of repair, restoration or in some cases, to be completely re-made.

Find out how to donate, how the match-funding works and more about our Sleeping Beauty refurbishment on our website via the button below. The campaign opens at 12 noon on Tuesday 28 November.

The Big Give Christmas Challenge starts Tuesday

and this from the ROH......

The Royal Opera House are delighted to announce that this year we will be taking part in Giving Tuesday. This is a global day of giving following Black Friday and Cyber Monday, where millions of people all over the world come together to support the causes and communities that mean so much to us all.

As the festive season approaches, we would be thrilled if you would offer your support next week and help secure the future of opera and ballet with a donation to the Royal Opera House.

The price that our audiences pay for a ticket in our main auditorium does not unfortunately cover the cost of putting that performance on stage. As a result, we rely on your support and generosity to be able to present the world class opera and ballet that you know and love, so next week we need your help.

We will be contacting you again on Tuesday 28 November so save the date and keep your eyes peeled for more information about how you can get involved and play your part.

On behalf of all of us here at the Royal Opera House, thank you for your support.

Bumping this as starts today

Double the difference of your charity donations this Christmas. Between 12pm (midday) 28th November and 12pm (midday) 5th December, donate whatever you can to a charity of your choice, and we'll do the doubling - magic!

Among many others

I didn't receive it either. I've had others from the ROH about the shop/offers etc, but not this one. Baffling. I wonder if I/we will receive today's email?! Who knows.

Not sure how the ROH determines who gets the appeal (for that matter not sure how the ROH determines a lot of things).  It did come from the ROH, not AFOCG, but it may be directed to the American Friends.  Perhaps when/if it comes there will be more information.

Pleased to see that Northern Ballet has met its matched target.

Which was surprisingly modest.  I am very thrilled for them that the target has been exceeded on the first day.  Let's hope people continue to donate regardless.

BRB are well on the way towards their target too.

It was - and although it had met the target by the time I got home from work, I donated anyway.

I couldn't help wondering if £8,800 was really going to be enough to replace the flood-damaged costumes and sets. Thought they would need more than that! I donated again despite having already donated a couple of months ago- very satisfying to see the final amount being doubled by the Big Give. Every little helps!

True but perhaps the danger of setting too big a figure (and possibly unachievable) is that it might put people off? Anyway they have raised £9172 today which is pretty good. Let's hope that continues over the next six days.

The "Rekindle the Romance" campaign had been running since April.  I don't know how much money had already been raised from that.

HELP NORTHERN BALLET REKINDLE THE ROMANCE

Dear Alison,

Thank you for your support so far for our Rekindle the Romance campaign.

I’m reaching out today at the start of the Big Give Christmas Challenge week, to ask you to double your impact and support to the Company.

Your continued commitment is vital as we aim to raise the funds to restore, recreate and tour our beloved production of Romeo & Juliet, with a full orchestra, in spring 2024.

Our dancers are poised to start rehearsals. Our technical and wardrobe teams have their tools and needles in hand, ready to repair the traditional sets and intricate costumes damaged in a devastating flood in 2015. Our musicians are ready and waiting to perform Prokofiev’s unforgettable score.

But we need your help, and your donation today really could make all the difference.

If you are able to give now, your donation will be automatically doubled, thanks to generous match funds already in place – ensuring that your gift will make twice the impact.

One donation, twice the impact!

This production is a cornerstone of Northern Ballet’s history and heritage, and I cannot wait to share it with our audiences across the country. By supporting our Christmas Challenge campaign today, you can help us recreate this timeless ballet for future generations to enjoy.

Will you help to bring our star-crossed lovers back to life?

Donate Today!

Thank you,

Federico Bonelli

Artistic Director of Northern Ballet

Donations made through the Big Give will be matched £1 for £1, making double the difference.

To qualify for match funding, all donations must be made via our Big Give Christmas Challenge campaign page.

Good point- perhaps the target is just for The Big Give and doesn't include donations already made before 28 Nov. That sounds better and I hope that's the case.

Donations made via the NB website (or any other company's come to that) are not included in The Big Give which is a charity giving page.

I'm guessing, though, that the matching funding stops once the target is hit - does anyone think differently?

I tried out the Big Give website to see what happens when you donate after the target has been exceeded, and you are right- we get a response saying that the donation won't be doubled as the target has been reached, but they still thank you for donating. Clear, honest, efficient. 👍

I have received no communication from the ROH.

I had been going to say that I hadn't, too, but then I may not have signed up for fundraising emails from the ROH, in which case they wouldn't have been able to contact me.  On re-reading, I realise that they weren't taking part in The Big Give, but only Giving Tuesday, which I think is USA?

And never sent the follow up email (at least to me) anyway...

Following on from this, The Big Give is announcing Arts for Impact 2024, from 19th to 26th March: "From helping with mental health to improving social skills, arts and culture can have a huge, meaningful impact on lives."

I'm not sure whether there will be dance-related charities involved, but thought I'd mention it anyway.

I somehow managed to miss out on this, but:

"The clock is ticking! You have just 24 hours left to make double the difference in our Arts for Impact campaign.

You have until 12pm (midday) on Tuesday 26th March to make your donation. We’re delighted to see that just under £2.5m has been raised so far - and there’s still time to have your donation doubled!"

And yes, there are dance-related charities included - among other things.

English National Ballet's Pipeline Project, Acosta Dance Foundation (for their Greenwich classes) and National Youth Ballet are on it - they've all reached their match targets, which is great!

There are still other community and youth arts projects on it - so not purely dance, but programmes that include ballet and dance among other art forms.
