  1. Never feel foolish, BillyBob. I have been watching ballet for longer than you have been alive (I think!), and I still learn all the time, and am amazed at how much I don't know. We all live and learn and, most importantly, learn to love ballet more and more....most of us for the best part of our lives! A big part of why I love this forum is how much I learn from others, many of whom are more knowledgeable than I will ever be. And by the way, your review of WT was wonderful: clear, cogent and heartfelt, with great observations. So you have absolutely no reason to feel vulnerable posting up....and here's to many more!
  2. I'm not being facetious, BillyBob, just trying to give you information about someone you clearly admire. I won't bother next time.
  3. BillyBob....Beatriz has already risen through the ranks in that she is now just one level below Principal. I hope she achieves the final rise soon!
  4. Well if that is the case I certainly expect a reduction in the price of the tickets I have bought. Thanks for the info, Bluebird.
  5. Interesting....I haven't been contacted by them in any way, and I have row A tickets for April 21st. I hope they will remain row A!!
  6. The German couple who won the pairs Gold gave an incredible free programme, especially since they had some points to make up after a glitch in the short. Well done to them!
  7. I have just read all the reviews on today's links.....four stars across the board, with much praise for all cast members.
  8. I have always found it fascinating, in my many years of ballet-going, to see how very differently ballets and dancers are perceived. In the days before social media, when all we had to read were the critics, I often wondered whether some of them had been at the same performance. The wildly varying reviews used to bewilder me, but then I realised early on that we all have our different ways of looking at and feeling things. One person will love, say, the decor in someone's house and his/her friend will hate it. Same with anything, and we all need to respect each other's views. The last thing that we as moderators want (and we have said this many times) is for this to become a fan site. That's why we call it a forum. I am all for everyone being able to say exactly what they think....and in this snowflake world that is becoming less and less possible or tolerated. So please everyone, keep your impressions coming, both positive and negative; as long as you all respect each other, and keep within our AUP, all opinions are very welcome here. And please give each other some slack; as was pointed out above, what is said in writing can sound very different from how it is meant to sound. Finally, remember that we are all equally passionate about the art form, and this will lead to deep and differing opinions all round.
  9. Ha ha I could never see it from SCS or the amphi; I think they must have tweaked it because this is the first time it was even slightly obvious as to what it was. But maybe, as you say , it's because I know it's there!!
  10. The bear was clearer this time as well. I could actually see it from the amphi, and he seemed to hang around for a longer time so that we could all recognise that this is what that sheet actually is! For the rest, I really enjoyed it and agree that Beatriz And Marcellino were a very sunny couple....great to have him back. Whenever I want to find Isabella amongst the corps I just look for the biggest smile on the stage, and it will invariably be attached to her. With all the excitement about the young talent in the company, it was wonderful to be reminded of the 'older' principals, and how darn good they are. Lauren Cuthbertson, Sarah Lamb and Laura Morera were all superb. Ryoichi Hirano is a relatively new principal and I thought did very well, and will get better as he develops into the role, but I did feel his pain. I also liked Matthew Ball's Polixenes (I didn't notice about the clothes, and assume that as he has always been scheduled to go on that they were made just for him!); imperious, arrogant and bad tempered, then all sweetness and light when he finds that the girl his son loves is a princess. There is much in Shakespeare's work about hypocrisy, forgiveness, humble pie, pure love....hmmm, sounds like Giselle! Muntagirov danced beautifully, and again the seeming effortlessness of everything he does is a joy to behold. He was a delightful and secure partner for Lamb, who was also on great form. Lauren Cuthbertson inhabits the role of the wronged Hermione like no-one else. The purity of her dancing, the total credibility of her dramatic interpretation and her deep empathy with the character's pain is evident from start to finish. Brava Lauren. I look forward to seeing the two more casts that I am going to see. I think this was a good opener, especially with all the cast changes.

Agree....Oropesa would lift this production to new heights. I was really impressed with her Lucia last year.
  13. What would have been really helpful would have been if Yasmine and Matthew had been cast together, in the same performance.....
  14. Bottom of the escalator again, folks! That is our regular place whilst all the works are going on. Lauren is one of the great dance actresses, IMHO. BillyBob, you will love her. Hope to see some of you later. Black trousers, white jumper, that's me.
  15. Regarding Morera's Giselle, I am missing this time but loved her in it last time. The reason that I didn't buy tickets this time is her partner. I didn't really like him in the last run, and couldn't afford to risk this again. I say this because last time, everyone was telling me to see Akane as Giselle. I managed to get a ticket for the final show, went along, and was distinctly underwhelmed all round. When I saw her last week with Ben Ella, I was blown away by her. Just shows the difference a partner can make. Everyone else saw the wonderful Giselle in Akane last time, so it must just have been me....but I am so glad I am now on the same hymn sheet as the others!
  16. Shya, I understand what you mean, but I don't think that Yasmine Naghdi needs 'bigging up', or that she is 'bigged up' by forum posters on here. I think perhaps what they are doing is just musing about why Hayward seems to get more publicity and exposure than Yasmine does, even though they are both as wonderful as each other in their different ways. I think it is great to have them both as principals at the same time. Something/someone for everyone. Unlike Lizbie, I was more moved by the Naghdi/Ball performance, but loved Friday night for different reasons. Between both pairs, every aspect of this ballet was covered beautifully.
  17. Gasparini is exactly the right dancer to personify joy!
  18. The slippages happened during La Sylphide. They had to bring the curtain down, clean the stage then start Act 2_again. The dry ice had gone wrong and left a slippery film on the floor! I agree with what posters have said about it being churlish to mention Ball's fall in S B. I was also there and he simply ran onstage with such excitement that he simply slipped over, got back up and continued as if nothing had happened. In Giselle his slight stumble was so small that many people wouldn't have noticed. Again, he just continued. Neither incident had any impact at all on the quality of his performance. I have seen the best of the best stumble and fall. With the physical efforts and risks these wonderful dancers take for our pleasure, year after year, I am surprised it doesn't happen much more often....which is a testament to their hard work, fitness, professionalism and artistry.
  19. I so agree, Capybara. Ah well, I guess all of the forum members' and social media words will have to do!
