  1. Thanks mimi'smom we kind of had a crazy experience with the associates as I had never even heard of such schemes and as I said dd only been taking ballet for 7 months, although doing other dance for a few years, and teacher suggested I took her along as she is "The Royals type" teachers words not mine, so I looked around online found 4 local associates classes RBS, Elmhurst, MIDAS and Graham Fletchers Ballet Associates so just auditioned for them all not expecting to get into any but thinking it would be a good chance to see what auditions are like, next thing we know we have 4 yeses and not really knowing what to do!! In the end we have accepted 2 and turned down 2 but my choices were very hard to make due to lack of information and knowledge, therefor although not expecting any yes letters from vocational I decided there was no way I was going in blind again so gathering all the info I can before we even apply for audition!! All your help has been great ad hopefully answering others questions too!'
  2. I'm terrible I like to have as much information as possible, it's just hard as nobody at our local school really does ballet and most haven't even heard of Elmhurst, tring or Hammond so I have nobody to talk to locally!!
  3. Wow billyelliott that's really helpful to have some figures to work with, thank you!
  4. Thank you so much pictures, I really want to get a realistic view on the costs involved as we are far from rich and I don't want to embark on something that is out of our reach financially, and I know the chances of getting into one of these schools is extremely slim but to even audition I think you need a realistic idea of what your letting yourself in for because if you know full well you can't afford it you then need to consider, do I even audition or not and if you do you need to explain to dc that even if by some miracle they got a yes that they wouldn't be able to accept :\ it's all so much to talk in, I hadn't even considered insurance!!! Thank you so much for your reply x
  5. Thanks Billyelliott that has been really helpful, I feel like all I've done over the last couple of months is google and use this forum looking for as much info as possible, I have looked at the funding scale before but was more concerned about the extra costs of trips and outings, uniforms, pocket money etc the things that aren't on the schools websites, was a little concerned by the notion of just being billed at the end of the term for extras!! It's nice to hear peoples first hand experiences!! Very grateful for your comment
  6. Hi all, As some of you may know I am very new to all this, my daughter has been dancing a few years but only started Ballet classes in the beginning of this year and since then it has been a bit of a whirlwind of auditions, classes and thoughts if vocational school being as she will be going into year 7 next September. I have no experience of vocational schools what so ever and I don't know anyone that's been to one and I really don't know what to expect, so I am asking for any advice from the audition process through to if they get accepted what is it like to go to one, what are the real costs even if you get a funded place I'm sure it is still costly? How often do the children come home? Do they do shows, comps etc what do I really need to know???? So many questions I really would be grateful for any advice from members who have children at vocational school now, in the past, those who have auditioned but didn't get in, those who attended themselves....anything lol thank you all x
  7. She also dances one day in the week but teacher said Saturday is their main day so she couldn't really carry on if she missed it as this is when they do their grade work and work on troupes. I was really upset and even offered to do exams in a private lesson but she said it weren't just about the exams, daughter is a good all rounder and she's worried about her not actually getting to do much dancing, what with associates being more technique and excersise etc the phrase don't put all your eggs in one basket springs to mind. But you have to remain loyal to where it all started and it's not as if she would miss out she will still be doing 2 other associates classes so I suppose you can't be greedy, just felt a little wrong to say no to such a great school!
  8. So after a very agonising couple of weeks we have decided to turn down our place at Elmhurst, dd local teacher will not allow her to miss Saturdays and traveling to Birmingham in the morning for Elmhurst back home for local classes and then back to Birmingham for the RBS just seemed like too much to put onto a child of 10 we figured that by just concentrating on one was better than trying to squeeze 2 in and her burning herself out! So hopefully that means a dc on waiting list for y6 Birmingham will be getting a letter soon!! Best of luck to all those that have accepted their place xx
  9. She will be at Birmingham and very sorry to hear your bad news my daughter got a no last year so it can always change to a yes, and RBS do mid associates so maybe next year will be her time x
  10. Fantastic twiglet!!! what year group is she? X
  11. Omg Lou78 I too am in the same position as you as my daughter got a YES!!!! So shocked!! Not decision time, does she do both or turn one down?? Congratulations to Kellyb also
  12. Wow massive congratulations to you and your DD Lou what fantastic news, will she be accepting both places? X
  13. I have the same worry grumpybearzuk
  14. *found not fouls, bloomin predictive txt
  15. Hi Kellyb my daughter auditioned last Saturday too but we haven't heard anything yet either, last year the letters took a couple of weeks but people seem to think it will be emails this year so hopefully will hear a bit sooner, let's hope for next week and welcome to the forum, I've not been using it for long and have fouls everyone very welcoming and there is lots of useful advice and info x
  16. What brilliant news grumpybearzuk congratulations to you daughter xx
  17. Dd is only going to accept one of the monthly classes, we had a chat about it as she really wanted to do both but we just feel it would be too much to do everything and as you mentioned earlier we were worried about conflicting teaching techniques plus the small matter of costs not just for the classes but the travel and entertaining our other children whilst she is in class and we also feel that she needs time to still be a little girl and play and see friends and go to parties etc so giving up one Sunday seems the better option to giving up two xx
  18. Plus twiglet the whole festival trouble came about from us not expecting to get into RBS for starters and then even if she did get in it was ok as the classes were Saturdays and festivals were Sundays so we thought there wouldn't be a problem so I allowed her to commit to them, only to find out she was accepted and then classes were to be on a Sunday for the first few months, now we know she has been accepted and class days and times etc we won't be taking on any other commitments unless we are certain they don't clash with the associate classes
  19. Twiglet I don't know what I'd do to be honest, we just applied for everything she wanted to do and hoped one would say yes, we never dreamt that we would get more than one yes!! And last year the only thing she auditioned for was Elmhurst and they said No so not got high hopes, although she hadn't done much ballet then, but it seemed silly to not go to the audition when it was already paid for even though she's been offered places elsewhere, plus it's all good practice x
  20. We too are waiting for audition results but nothing yet from birmingham, although she did only do it on Saturday lol
  21. Sounds like a good idea taxi4ballet, it's so hard to know what to do for the best when all we've ever done is attended our local dance school, now we have to consider all these associate classes too! Not that I'm complaining, just a lot to take on board in a short space of time, so glad I found this forum when I did!
  22. Yeah I'm hoping to speak to them and try to sort something out, as you said even if it's a case of leaving a little early or arriving a little late, I'm pulling all her solos so hopefully we won't have a problem with just the duets and troupes! Thanks for all the help and advice xx
  23. My daughter is also hooked on loom bands! but lets put things into perspective, let's say you are an Estenders addict, you love it, never miss an episode, record it etc that's your all time favourite but you will still have other TV shows you like to watch, you might even get hooked on Springwatch for the couple of weeks it's on, but you'll still go back to Eastenders in the end terrible comparison I know but same basic principle applys, if your daughter loves to dance she will come back to it she's just spending a little time on her other interests at the moment, and I think it's healthy for the kids to have a break and try other things and have something in commen with their peers who don't always get the whole dancing obsession! Just go with the flow and maybe try saying she can have her loom bands after dance practice, dinner and homework are all completed, I find them a great way for my daughter to wind down in the evening, she can sit in bed or on the sofa with them for half hour before bed and it seems to really relax her xx
