Hi. I am new to this site. Can I ask a question on JA's if anybody knows the answer. Do the boys have a class on their own or is it mix. Also how many are in a class. Thanks

I think London might have a dedicated boys class but the other centres mixed (I know Birmingham certainly is).

I don’t know how you guys are managing it - I keep wondering if you’ve all heard yet and I don’t even have a kid in the mix (I just see myself here in two years time 😂

Same! We have a year off auditioning after a never ending 2020 (and missed the deadline for SI - bad mum) but honestly have butterflies each time I log on here 😂

Fingers crossed you all hear soon!

How strict do you think they’ll be on the photos? We definitely didn’t get as good as her teachers could have got out of her :( I always feel guilt when I seem to have the key role in the application process 🤦🏼‍♀️ I just can’t see the tweaks!

I wouldn't worry too much about the photos. There was a massive lag between taking ours in January last year and finally doing the audition video in October, during which DD entirely changed proportions. Looking back, the photos were awful (and I mean AWFUL 😂) so I can't believe they played any part in getting her place, in fact I think they would have gone against her. I've read on here before that they are primarily used for identification purposes which makes sense.

She’s not doing anything dangerous, just for example in Grade 2 RAD they only go up to 3rd position where as for the audition they are being asked for plies in all positions. Or for releves, they are being asked to do this in pirouette position. She has done releves before but not in pirouette position... same as rond de jambe, that is something she hasn’t covered in her ballet class... however we have seeked help and advice from another ballet teacher so she knows what to do and can practice safely.

My DD was only RAD grade 2 when she auditioned for CBA - think they are looking for potential in younger dancers rather than anything polished. Good luck!

Sorry if this is a silly question but if accepted do year 4 and year 5 take separate classes or are they together? I’m sure I saw someone say they were together which seemed odd.

Yes year 4 and 5 are together. Seems to work 😊

Does anyone know what time the classes are? And are all the age groups at the same time? I have a dd age 11.

My year 5 DD is in Group 1 which runs 10am to 12:10pm and her year 7 friend attends about half an hour later. Worth mentioning that CBA streams by ability rather than age though so not sure how helpful that is!

Older groups are in the afternoon.

  7. I picked a couple of packs of lateral flow tests up from a collection point (leisure centre car park) yesterday - no details were taken, just the boxes handed over. Maybe have a look to see if you will pass a collection point on your journey? Hope you get sorted!

  8. When my 9 year old DD auditioned last September she was doing one RAD grade 2 class a week and hadn't started any other associates - she just had a good go at anything she hadn't already covered so don't be put off! She was put in group 1 which I'm fairly certain is the youngest though there is a spread of ages  (quite a few 12 year olds in there).

DD is not super super flexible and it hasn't seemed to have held her back in auditions (so far!). Think associate programmes are looking for potential at this stage.

One thing I am confused about is why they want photos and videos? At a JA insight day they said that the photos are not used as part of the selection process but just to identify the dancer, which makes more sense when there is a live audition with lots of children in the studio at once. Not sure how they can maintain this stance when they are auditioning by video. I can only imagine that they are used e.g. if they are choosing between two dancers and want to see their photos side by side.

That's a really good point! I was led to believe that photos were purely for identification purposes as well but then suppose why do in more than one position...

I'm just glad it didn't come down to the photos last year - DD had changed hugely by the time of the actual audition (proportions of a shetland pony to something more normal in 9 months 😂).

  10. Last year I filmed separately, from the start to end of the video (pretty sure the panel skip to the bits they're interested in). If I recall correctly, there were distinct areas to upload each to but don't hold me to that.

Not sure on the W position - assumed it was something to do with range of hip rotation but sure someone better informed will be along to advise!

    Good luck!
