Tring 6th form auditions (2014 entry)

thought i would start a thread about this as Tring doesn't have its own dedicated thread yet and the auditions have started!

My dd was there yesterday and enjoyed herself but didn't get the answer to some of the questions that we have. I can now answer one of my earlier questions here, though! It seems that no one in dd's group was interviewed  so i hope that that doesn't mean that they weren't interested.  only a couple of them went on to sing.

does anyone know what the possible outcomes from the first audition are? I think that it is either No, Yes without funding or Yes with an invite to second audition for funding. Is there also the option of being put on the waiting list for a place or the waiting list for the funding audition? I have asked this before but it was a while ago and some of the answers were slightly contradictory!

what sort of numbers usually go the 6th form funding audition?

Is it true that the current yr 11 automatically get a place in the 6th form? How many are there on the dance course in yr 11 at the moment and how big is the current first year of 6th form? they seem to be auditioning so many so the odds of even getting an offer of the 2nd audition seem slim especially if surest students will take up most of the places!!

good luck to all those still waiting to audition!

DD went today - their group had no opportunity to sing or play instruments - apparently not required at this stage - but they were asked questions about their aspirations and why they were applying to Tring when they went in for their solos ..... .?.? Our tour was time managed - they then had 45mins ballet class, 30mins jazz class and solos.

My dd is at Tring ...this time last year we were you...!

Auditioning at lots of places...finals....dadas ...mind boggling.

My dd is loving it and so pleased she picked Tring for sixth form. So much opportunity and both teachers and pastoral are wonderful.

Its what ever place feels right for your dc That is important . Not gossip.

I know of 1 Tring year 11 girl who auditioned for sixth form places elsewhere ...just like elmhurst, enbs and rbs students try out at different places. In the end she decided to stay at Tring and was still offered the opportunity of funding. These schools are used to students moving. Hopefully !

My Friend is at Tring in Year 10 and he said that they get offered scholarships for 6th form however if they go and audition any where else these scholarships get taken away from them

That does sound a bit mean!

Thank you Guesty and im gald that your dd is enjoying herself. This is probably my dd s first or most likley choice, too! Are you able to say how many there are in yr 11 on the dance course and how many girls there are in the current lower 6th on the dance course. Can you remember much about the different letters/offers etc after the first audition? How many we're at the funding audition last year compared to first auditions! Feel free to pm me if you would rather!!

A couple of our friends who were at Tring lower school (this had been over the last 4 years) were offered mds places for sixth form but told that they had to accept it and not audition elsewhere. One of them didn't want to try anywhere else so accepted, the other auditioned and had a couple of other offers but decided to stay put, and still got the funding at Tring.

Personally I think it's a bit mean to make students think they can't apply elsewhere when is a bit of an empty threat. I'm pleased to say though that most people I've known at Tring have been very happy there, all bar the usual gripes we all have about our particular schools!

My DD auditioned 2 years ago so things may have changed but I think not for the actual process.

First audition - letter sent either with a no or an offer for a place.  I have no idea if all those offered a place are invited to the funding audition or only a selected number.

After finals - letter (or phonecall) offers DADA and if you have not initially been offered a DADA you are placed on a waiting list.  At the finals they are obviously 'marked' as they are placed on a waiting list in order and you are able to ring up (they tell you when) to find out your position on the list.

Jazzpaws - you can accept a DADA offer from as many schools as you like before making your final decision.  I believe Tring ask for a deposit as confirmation but the year DD applied finals for Tring were in March and the deadline for deposit/confirmation of acceptance was June.

It is actually that period immediately after the finals that there is most uncertainty as there is a lot of movement.  Obviously one person might have several DADAs and once they have made their mind up, schools they have turned down will then be offering the DADA to the next person on their waiting list.  And of course someone else might have a DADA at one school but prefer another where initially they are on the waiting list but then get offered a place at their preferred school so another DADA opens up there.  Its all very complicated.  If you are lucky you get a DADA straight off for your chosen school and its all straightforward as you are sorted straight away.  Otherwise it is a case of playing the waiting game.  Someone DD knew had 3 DADA offers but her favourite was a London dance college and finals/DADA offers were not done there until early May so she made no decision until she had the result from that one.

I hope this helps and is not too confusing.

Thank you for that :)

It sounds much more reasonable now !

More uncertainty after finals. Oh dear I thought it was bad enough now and we are only waiting for result of Elmhurst prelim at the moment. Think I need to chill out a bit lol x

Hi. Last year at Tring dd did initial audition. About week later we got a letter offering a place and all the forms to complete to accept. Included was the offer of attending the funding audition. At the funding audition I think I remember her saying there were 30 or so Invited back and they would be rated in order with offers sent out from the top down. So if you don't initially get a funded place that doesn't mean you won't as not all will take the offer.

A week after funding audition we received the good news of the award of funding. I know of others who got waiting list for funding to then happily get a dada offer just after Easter. And others who unfortunately never got that opportunity .

I think there are 27 now in lower sixth.

I remember also the lady saying 350 had auditioned plus then the overseas students.

Little tip...We learnt if its a small envelope its a good sign and if its just one sheet of A4 folded it wasn't!

Good luck. Its a crazy time but well worth it. My dd is having the 'best time ever' she tells me!

Keep us in touch!

Also..I just checked my paperwork and we had put on the initial application that we required funding to attend. Only people who checked that box and were offered places got funding audition offer. If they hadn't checked it they got straight offer or a no.

Hope this all helps. Is a learning curve!

Pm me if you need anything. X

While it is true that those students offered continuation of mds into 6th form receive a letter saying that, given the level of funding offered , the school would find it strange for students to audition elsewhere and they are invited to discuss it with the staff. They are not manacled to the school but , especially since the change to dada, an mds place can be very beneficial to families.

I know from personal experience that even where mds continuation is offered, the school will support application elsewhere if they believe it to be in the best interests of the student.

This funding is separate to the dada funding for 6th form.

Do you mean that a small envelope is a good sign or a big one?!!

I've just looked back at all my correspondence & in fact we had letters in large A4 envelopes on every occasion. The first letter we received following the prelim audition, which offered my dd a place & also an invitation back to attend the Dada audition, was most certainly in a large envelope as it also contained all enclosures like registration form, insurance & Bupa papers etc should we wish to accept there & then & pay the fees or alternatively there was a cut off slip at the bottom of the letter which had to be completed & sent back if we could only accept the place if successful at the future Dada audition.

I do love these big or small envelope discussions we have every year - lol

Just open it! (they're addressed to the parents, you don't have to wait) :-D

Julie, I find this response rather flippant.

Firstly, nobody asked about envelopes but Guesty very kindly thought to include the information because she probably knew it would help. I asked my question for clarification as her point that a small letter was a good sign but a single piece of paper was a bad sign seemed to contradict tself. Secondly, the correspondence about preliminary auditions from some schools has been addressed to my dd so I assume that the same will be true of the result letters. Finally, who says that people don't have to wait? The arrangements for who opens the letters and when is a matter for each family to decide. My dd has said that she wants me to wat until she gets in, even if the letter IS addressed to me and I fully respect that and imagine that other people will have made a similar decision.

Sorry...I must have been having a moment.. Big a4 is a good sign..smaller envelope not so.

I guess the same conversations happen every year! Its lovely to have the experiences of people on here and the wealth of knowledge this forum brings. I know it helped me last year!

I'm sure I will be just as anxious in a year or so. :-)

However, I believe Julie was merely trying to say that following an audition, there is literally nothing anyone can do to change the result. What will be, will be. Nothing flippant about it; just stating the obvious that getting in a tizz about what size the envelope will be will not help any of us, nor change the result.

Julie has been there, done that and got the t-shirt when it comes to auditions and we are lucky to have her as a Moderator.

It's all stressful, whatever way the results come in...

when my dd auditioned last year we received the results in four different ways: one in person (Ballet West); one by letters addressed to dd (Central); one on UCAS-style website which only dd could log onto (Royal Conservatoire of Scotland); and one by email addressed to dd (Rambert.)

The email result was undoubtedly the worst...it came in at 7pm one evening on her phone when we were in the car. She said opening the email was SO scary!!

Good luck to everyone auditioning - and thinking of you all xx
