  • MaddieRose changed the title to Pierre Lacotte (1932-2023)

Oh no 😢....Lynn Seymour and Pierre Lacotte both in the same year... what a very sad loss. 😢😢Two pillars of my dance world.

His numerous wonderful reconstructions, eg La Vivandiere, Le Papillon, The Pharaoh’s Daughter, Marco Spada, Ondine, La Fille du Danube, etc and his own choreography eg La Nuit est une Sorcière, Intermede, Numeros (the latter two for Ballet Rambert) and the recent Le Rouge et Le Noir for the Paris Opera Ballet. So many enjoyable evenings in the theatre or, if I couldn’t actually travel across the world to catch them live, so many, many enjoyable hours rewatching on video or dvd  [when I should have been doing boring tasks instead]. He also did set and costume designs, eg for Le Rouge et Le Noir. But my first experience of his choreography was actually his reconstruction of a pas de deux and solo from a ballet danced by Marie Taglioni, with the quirky name of “Nathalie, or The Swiss Milkmaid”, for Paris Opera Ballet etoile -and his wife- Ghislaine Thesmar.

He also directed his own ballet company after retiring from dancing (as premier danseur at Paris Opera Ballet), and later on, was artistic director of Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo, the ballet of Opera di Verona, and Ballet National de Nancy et de Lorraine.

Those who followed the news of Nureyev’s defection or later saw the documentary Rudolf Nureyev-Dance to Freedom, will have known that he and other Paris friends helped Nureyev to defect from the Soviet Union. (In the documentary, Lacotte was portrayed by Denis Aliev, in the film The White Crow, he was portrayed by Raphael Personnaz.)

Rest in peace, Pierre, and merci beaucoup for all your beautiful productions. My condolences to his widow Ghislaine and his loved ones.
