Desert Island Discs - Margot Fonteyn & others

Recommended Posts

I'm a huge fan of Desert Island Discs and have been exploring some of the back log episodes as most are available online. I was really happy to stumble across this episode with Margot but unfortunately it's only a five minute clip as the BBC seem to have lost a lot of the original sound clips. What a shame!

Anyway, I'm putting on here for those, like me, who have never heard this before. I especially love how she says she likes dancing in 'the new Romeo & Juliet'...!

I've done a bit of digging and found some of the other ballet episodes for those who are interested. I haven't included the more recent ones eg Tamara Rojo as they are easier to find. Looking forward to listening to these over the next few days :)

I remember listening to the episode with Sir Frederick Ashton during the Christmas/New Year lull at work one afternoon - very amusing and very interesting!

I apologise If this sounds very snobbish but what a novel experience these days.  Lists of music which primarily consist of pieces I have actually heard of and know.

These days the programme seems to consist of music which is entirely unknown to me, much of which I would happily never listen to again.

Thanks very much, TTP! Believe it or not, I actually recorded the Kenneth MacMillan Desert Island Discs when it was aired in 1983 - on my treasured old cassette recorder with the separate microphone pointing at the radio, and hoping that no-one would come into the room during the programme... those were the days. During the first lockdown last year, I found the tape and wondered if it would still work; it did, for a while, and I was really enjoying listening to it; then, KM's voice gradually started getting higher and higher and faster and faster until towards the end he sounded as if he was full of helium and completely incomprehensible. It was a bit sad but also very funny. Anyway, I will now aim to listen to it as it was intended to be heard!!

Thanks for these links. I greatly enjoyed listening to Patricia Ruanne, who had a gloriously eclectic choice of music, and spoke with a sardonic elegance and eloquence that was a joy to hear. Happy memories of her glamour on stage too. Will explore further anon...

Recently I invested in an annual subscription to Medici TV and was thrilled to see the double bill of The Sanguine Fan and Graduation Ball.

For all that both works looked very dated now I really enjoyed seeing the dancers of the old LFB.  Andria Hall was always a favourite of mine, ditto Lucia Truglia etc.  I always admired Patricia Ruanne, I long cherish the memory of her last Tatiana.

So, to see her again in the Sanguine Fan was a really treat.  Faintly silly ballet but the Elgar score was just glorious.  As was she.  The last word in expressive elegance.

Listening to the Merle Park reminds me that my Pa sent me a cassette of this broadcast when I was away at Choir School. I’d never heard any Andrew Lloyd Webber before, whilst the Finlandia was a revelation (turned out my Mama loved it) and I was most taken with the Kwela Joe 🙂

I spent the afternoon with Sirs Fred and Kenneth, and Lynn Seymour and David Wall.  So interesting hearing how much the latter three loved Song of the Earth...and discussing a new ballet called Mayerling!

And today Natalia Makarova...who also spoke of her love for Song of the Earth.  What a marvellous character she is!  “But I need wine AND cigarettes because they go together!” 🤣🍷

I have just listened to Merle Park's DID.  When asked which role she still really wants to dance, yep, you guessed it...Song of the Earth!  Who knew that this ballet was so very popular across such a broad spectrum of dancers as well as being Sir Kenneth's favourite.  I will never watch this ballet in the same way again!
