  1. I'm also enjoying watching the highlights with my dd at night - can't get time to watch it live during the day. Wishing your son all the best CeliB! What a brilliant experience to be in that beautiful city with such high quality coaching and peers . Yetanotherdancemum, my dd took part in summer schools with Harrison Lee and also competed alongside him in Aus. We are pleased to see him at Prix, he is a real gentleman and an inspiring young dancer. I haven't seen enough to know the full picture, but it seemed that the variations we saw required a lot of control rather than showy tricks - quite refreshing
  2. Thanks Tulip LinMM, there are scholarship prizes etc but the reason dd is entering is for the experience of competing, receiving feedback in that setting, meeting other dancers, trying to gauge where she fits with others her age etc. Really, her reasons are similar to reasons for attending summer schools.
  3. Well, my dd will definitely be taking part in this competition in Romania in March. So, if anyone else is going, let us know.

    Lucky

Yes, the opportunities here are amazing! Good luck to your dd
  5. Feeling for you hairbelles. I have to say that even though dd is terribly disappointed because she will be too old to apply next year, I'm relieved that she didn't get offered the waiting list. It would just be torturous for her. At least we are free to make other plans. Best of luck to those still waiting.
  6. bunhead99 - it means that you will probably not have an answer until very close to the date. If someone pulls out, you'll be offered a place. I don't think many decline, so it is usually due to injury or illness.
  7. Thanks LinMM - yes, we are considering that one. RBS and POB are her first choices so we were waiting for the results before trying to work out which other one she could do. To be honest, it was a bit stressful trying to find affordable accommodation in London. She would have had a long daily commute which she said she wouldn't complain about. Even Paris is half the price of London in July! She knew there was barely a chance of getting in, but still, it is horrible when they find out they have been rejected (again).
  8. oh, it just came through - 'no'. We knew it was unlikely to be yes, but dd will still be very disappointed tonight Good luck to everyone else still waiting!
  9. great news for you both! We are still waiting - I wonder if the yes's have gone out and the no's are going tomorrow????
  10. This is a difficult topic. We have had quite a lot of competition experience (mostly negative). In Australia it is expected that serious dancers compete. From our experience, the best advice I would give anyone, is to know what your goals of competing are. My dd chose variations (or contemporary dances) which would allow her time to drill things she was struggling with - e.g.: Italian fouettes. She is also shy and needed to work on her stage presentation and confidence, so they were definite goals. Often the judging is unfair for various reasons (e.g. the judge is a specialist in a completely different genre of dance) so if the goal of learning a particular dance, or performing it with expression has been achieved, then the end of the day feels much more worthwhile than if the goal of competing is winning. As a parent, I would be happy if she never competed again, but she wants to and says it is good for her development as a person and dancer. Just a few thoughts for those thinking of starting out in competitions.
  11. The email we received saying that they would let us know by 30th January instead of 30th December mentioned the reason was because of the extra high volume of applications. Normally there are a huge number of applications, so if there are even more than usual, it will be even harder to get a place.
  12. Waiting here too - There is such a slim chance of getting a place, but it holds up all the other applications because everything hinges on dates and budget. Good luck to everyone waiting. Hopefully we shall hear by Friday as promised!
  13. Hi anondancer, my dd is looking at ordering one of these too. She said they are $90 (including some other bits, dvds, massage balls etc) from the US from the Flexistretcher site - plus postage and double that price in the UK. If you find it cheaper please post here If only it were easier to source these things locally!
  14. Yes, they aren't pushing for it but think it would be a great experience.
  15. Thanks Heather, I'm not sure that we have the same competition in mind. The one my dd is considering is called World Ballet Competition and is run in Romania and Orlando, USA. The Open days in Romania do not require video audition. DD sent a video audition last year and was selected for the finals in USA but we did not attend because of the cost of travel. thanks
  16. Hello, my dd is considering entering World Ballet Competition. I'm not a fan of dance competitions and just wondered if anyone has had experience with this one in Romania? Cost is of course a big issue and dd thinks the experience of preparation and attendance will be worth it. She may not be able to attend a summer school if we spend the money on WBC. Hoping someone has been there before
  17. Pas de Quatre - You are probably right, I don't know about that - but, my dh says they should be marketing this technology for sports people (he knows about that sort of thing and I don't), he also said they should market them to people who want to wear high heels, fill in those pointy toe bits and make the shoes comfy to wear .

    Move It 2015

Yes, CP - see you there
  19. Is anyone going to Move It on the Friday? My dd's school will be performing and I'm very excited to have the opportunity to watch. I've never been to this expo before. Will it be huge, busy and wild? Any tips? Thanks,
  20. Hi Kat09, it varies as to how long they last depending on how much pointe work the dancer does. My daughter has 2 pairs because she was wearing two very differently shaped shoes last year (paste and Gaynors). I would estimate a single pair would last about a year for a full time vocation student. They sometimes wear thin and you patch them with a little of the two part putty. If the dancer is only doing a small amount of pointe work, they would last a couple of years. You need to have them fitted into a pair of pointe shoes just slightly larger than without. We have some very thick toe pads which are used to fit the pointe shoe, then the custom pouches are made inside the new pair of shoes. So, if the dancer already has particularly thick toe pads, they could potentially use the same shoe - but, ideally, a new pair. The RRP is £189, I will be offering a special introductory price of £135. Yes, the dancer would need to come to me or we could arrange a place to meet. I live in Hinckley. The fitting kit is designed to be portable. We did a couple of fittings in Australia at a ballet school and at a dance supply store. The student was fitted with her pointe shoes at the store and we fitted the pouches on site. Thanks for your encouragement.
  21. Hi I know this was a while back, but I just came across it. My dd did Joffrey Florence in 2012 and loved it! She would like to go back again this year not sure about funds. It was small and intimate, excellent teaching. The student standard was not as high as others she attended but the personal attention made up for it.
