  1. Ah Lin Zhang, I'm glad she stays. Her "Giselle" at Prix de Lausanne was so beautiful. Hope for more opportunities for her.
  2. Well, it seems not unusual for dancers coming from Russia to join on a lower rank. Yago Gonzaga joined as Soloist (in Germany: Demi Soloist) and was a former principal dancer in Perm. Certainly Laurent Hilaire has to balance between money (available for certain rank) and technical/artistic skills. The Level in Munich (I love your "Münich" @FionaE 😃) is quite high.
  3. I'm so sorry for Emilio, his Interview sounds as if his mood is quite good but retiring due to an injury must be so sad. Well, life of a dancer... I will always remember his strong "Tybalt" and his elegance in Dawson's "Affairs of the heart".
  4. ENSEMBLE NEWS Bayerisches Staatsballett Leaving: Emilio Pavan (Principal) due to ongoing injury Philip Hedges Emma Knowlson Sofia Ivanova-Skoblikova (First soloist) Valeriia Sklotskaiad Isabella Wagar Stefano Maggiolo Joining: Jakob Feyferlik (as Principal, coming from Dutch National) Ksenia Shevtsova (as First soloist coming from Stanislavski Theatre Moscow) Ana Gonçalves, Zhanna Gubanova, Zachary Rogers, Daniella Venter (Corps) Also, Ballet master Yana Zelensky left.
  5. It was certainly a smart move by Christian Spuck to begin his work as AD here with this piece. Next season I'm looking forward to his new piece "Madame Bovary".
  6. Last week, I attended Staatsballett Berlin's last performance for this season. We saw Messa da Requiem. Music by Guiseppe Verdi, Choreography by Christian Spuck. Onstage were the Rundfunkchor Berlin and 4 soloist singers from Deutsche Oper Berlin, and the Staatsballett of course. I was very sceptical before the show, usually I'm not a fan of both classical singers and dancers onstage, my concern is always, that either the dancers or the singers are just "decoration" for the other artists. Here, I was very moved and surprised how well the mingle of dancers and singers worked. It was a total work of art. My personal highlights were: - the many beautiful Pas de Deux, especially when performed by Polina Semionova and David Soares - the "mass scenes" were singers and dancers were floating like waves across the stage - the soloist singers, especially Tenor Andrei Danilov with the voice of an Angel Here's a review I can fully support: https://kultur24-berlin.de/messa-da-requiem-von-verdi-vom-staatsballett-berlin/#english Before the performance, I attended the annual meeting of the Ballet friends where we said Good-bye to Christiane Theobald who had worked for ballet and companies in Berlin since 36 years. I don't know if I'm happy with Theobald's idea to merge all 3 ballet companies in 2004 to one big company. A lot of dancers left then, among them many I loved to watch. Her last job was interims AD when Oehman/Waltz left in 2020. But her commitment to dance and dancers is undeniable, and she overtook the helm in difficult times, especially with the unforeseen Covid disaster. After curtain call, the former Mayor of Berlin Klaus Wowereit and the current Senator for Culture in Berlin Joe Chialo thanked her in very warm and appreciative words. She received Honorary Membership of both Staatsballett Berlin and of the Circle of Friends&Supporters of Staatsballett Berlin. The following reception was also a nice opportunity to gather with dancers and supporters of Staatsballett.
  7. The video I was waiting for: Flammes de Paris with Iana Salenko and Shale Wagman
  8. It's totally confusing with the "year" rank. But yes, It's about money/pay scale. I had asked about this a former dancer with ENB some time ago.
  9. Thank you @Emeralds for the explanation, many things I had not considered. Yes these photos were from Petit’s Coppelia. Yonah Acosta Was supposed to dance with Laurretta but then an injury got on the way. I think he and Shale Wagman are the same height.
  10. Well, the decision may also have to do with money, I think you can only promote a dancer when there's a free "slot" and money for a higher rank. Also...in my opinion, at least Ivana Bueno has been "overseen" far too long and a promotion was overdue.
  11. It's not the first time that I read that L. Summerscales is quite tall. This season, she danced in COPPÉLIA alongside Shale Wagman, who isn't a very tall dancer. Here are 2 pictures from curtain call, and it seems he is taller than her 🤔
  12. Nicholas Mackay is his brother. Together they run a production company with focus on ballet media and performances (or actually, with focus on Julian Mackay, more or less😁, but they also work with other dancers like Jinhao and Jeanette Zhang). Nicholas is very talented, his photos are ace. Apparently Julian comes only in double pack, why Hilaire accepted that, I don't know. What the critic said about Shale Wagman is more than true, he literally floored the audience in his debut on Friday, and certainly wasn't less spectacular on Sunday (with Mackay as Solor). Solor, here he comes... There are at least 2 dancers in Munich, technically much better and with more acting skills than J. Mackay.
  13. Good that it wasn't lost. And I'm sorry you missed the piece again, but don't give up! It's worth every effort. I already demanded to bring it back to Berlin, I mean...we just had it and now it's gone again!☹️
  14. I was baffled, and I don’t get the apotheosis. I guess the drama continues in Neverland😃. As for the Mackay review, I saw some clips on Instagram and wasn't impressed either. So far, I still haven't seen anything worth all the fuss about him. There are indeed more than 2 dancers better than him in MUC. Makes me think again why T. Rojo didn't want to keep him😏
  15. I wasn't there but here is a review ( in German, but Deepl or Google can do the trick😉). https://magazin.klassik.com/konzerte/reviews.cfm?task=review&PID=8000 Warning: a pretty bad review for J. Mackay's Solor.
  16. ...I'm so sad I didn't read it. Iana Salenko was the Chosen One btw...😭
  17. I forgot to mention that La Bayadère will be performed in May/June 2024 in Madrid, when Bayerisches Staatsballett goes on tour to Spain.
  18. Last week, I saw "La Bayadère" in Munich, choreographed by Patrice Bart (after Marius Petipa). I wrote an article for the online LaNotte art magazine, here is the link: https://www.lanottemag.com/post/la-bayadère-in-munich It was a wonderful evening. The ballet is part of next season in Munich and highly recommended to watch. Cast change is in the works 😉 (sorry for typos/mistakes, my proof read was ignored🙄).
  19. Which is bad timing for ballet/dance enthusiasts and dancers in Munich. Bavarian Staatsballett has a premiere Tonight ("Spheres"), and same performance is on the following 2 days. Junior company involved as well.
  20. Ehm...well not all of small towns (you didn't mean to say, I know 🙂). And if they do have dance companies, then these are sometimes very small. Like just 7 dancers who dance several roles in a full-length ballet. I know such a company. But yes, quantity doesn't anything about quality. I saw a Frida Kahlo ballet there and it has touched me very much.
  21. @LACAD thanks for sharing your thoughts. I feel it was certainly a very tempting, but not the smartest idea to put this Goecke piece against Pina Bausch’s Rite of Spring. It simply looked "pale" in contrary to the so vivid, agitating Rite. In Berlin, I've seen his "Pierrot Lunaire" (not a fan here) and "All long dem day" for the State Ballet School. The latter was VERY impressive, the choreo just fit like a glove to Nina Simone's Song. Great solo and corps parts. In Munich, I saw his "Sweet bones' melody", I posted about it somewhere here, and this absolutely worked also on a big stage. Oh and yes, Staatsoper Berlin is a beauty. Come back often🙂
