And sometimes you don't realise they are bad habits because they look impressive.  Things like really high extensions but with out of alignment hips etc.

DD’s teacher says that it takes ten times as long to correct a bad habit as it does to form one.

Recent NYB Instagram post hints that results maybe on the way out!  I may be reading too much into this so reign me back Balletco members - it’s the run up to the weekend and I may just be getting too excited! 💃 Coffee needed and back to work and stop refreshing email!  💻

Oh dear, well I got that one wrong.  Just seen the email and posts to say next week. DD hasn’t even mentioned it - why do I get stressed?  It’s been a long week - late night out and time for bed.  Got to be up for rehearsals and dance classes - roll on the weekend of the dance Mum! We love it really!? 🤔 🤣

Hi - the met police clarified today she got a taxi to Marble Arch yesterday morning from Reading. (They gave the wrong info when they said she came from royal Brompton it was Royal Berkshire). She was seen on cctv around 11am in Marble Arch. She is still missing. They are asking dance students  to share this on social media in hopes someone she has been in touch with sees it.

Thanks for confirming this - just back from meeting friends one of whom who works in communications at the Royal Brompton and they were pretty confused when I asked about it.  She made some enquiries and the West London trusts are on the look out for her - this includes the ambulance services who have been alerted to her medical condition.

The police have asked for missing persons poster to be shared as widely as possible. I don’t know if I can put it on here? Or how to?

I have managed, I think, to insert a picture and the Thames Valley missing persons link.

Let us all pray that she is found. X

She was in fact at the Royal Brompton Hospital in South Kensington, she did get into a cab and ask to go to Marble Arch. The initial reports were mistaken with the Royal Berkshire Hospital. As far as I know she is still missing, the police are extremely concerned for her in the weather conditions. Please could people share the news story on their social media, as police are looking for all help they can get in locating her before it is too late.

    Thanks

Doesn't give us much faith in the reporting from Thames Valley Police if she was actually at the Royal Brompton.  I do hope she is found soon.  If she is rough sleeping around Marble Arch it is not a safe place to be - never mind the freezing temperatures!

The results email said over 850 applicants for full-time training at WL, so I guess mids-only applications take the number even higher! We were told there were record numbers this year.

That is definitely higher than previous years as the total of WL and MAs does not normally add up to that.  Fantastic achievement to those who have finals auditions.

Out of curiosity... about 850 children audition ... how many get finals and how many places are there?

Luckily DD doesn't want to go away to vocational school (currently!), so I'm just interested.

I think they are all so brave to audition.

Not all of the 850 are going for WL assuming the figures in their Annual Reports - some only audition for MAs.

Okay, by 'top school' I meant Royal Ballet School, by company I meant Royal Ballet. I'm not being quarrelsome for the sake of being so. But did any of those children without the perfect physique make it into the stream of school and company?

And on the other side not all those with full turn-out, great flexibility, ideal ballet body, great musicality, been through JAs, offered scholarship places for the other vocational schools in the UK get offered a place at RBS.  If you don't try you will never know and getting in is just the start as you strive to stay at the top throughout your training and professional life, should you get that far.  Good luck to everyone applying this season be it for associates, vocational or summer schools.  :)

My DD is very happy. No joy for Elmhurst which was a shame as a lovely school.Highly unlikely she will get into RBS. Has a place on the Spring Course so that's a dream for her to dance once at WL in her lifetime. Has auditioned for YDA so we will wait and see. She is such a happy girl passed her 11+ so if nothing happens for her she will be happy at her local grammar school and doing ballet as a hobby. Got to trust that fate will show us the way to go! The physio lady we saw said she had excellent turnout but not strong enough muscles to use it so gave her exercises to do to build up strength. Sorry really wish I had never said anything. Just meant before people had the cost of physio as it was expensive!!!!

Sorry to hear about your no and all the best for the YDA outcome - from what I have read it is very hard to predict what each school is looking for.  A yes for RBS Spring is definitely something to celebrate.  Hopefully if she follows the exercises suggested by the physio she can build up strength over time.  Good luck to her whatever happens in the years to come.

When my dd was a JA very few got SS places ...

Now that there are four weeks in the summer I understand from DD's friends that there were more Associates offered places last year in the context of more places around.  We don't know anyone who applied for the Easter course - Associate or otherwise - so they are still waiting for the summer.

I believe middle of February! Good luck!

Two years ago it was mid February that SS places were announced which was before places at Finals were known but last year it was after the Finals results, I think, at least a week after the Finals audition (despite saying February).  They gave the increased number of applications with the additional weeks as the reason for the delay.  So who knows when they will send SS results this year!  With the addition of the Easter Intensive and the option to apply for one or other there may be more opportunities for UK applicants. Fingers crossed for those waiting to hear!

Can you imagine what a nightmare it would be working that out somewhere like the ROH amphitheatre, where the price bands change both horizontally and vertically? :)

And at Sadler's Wells I think all the seats are visible from onstage (even the back row of the Second Circle).  Ditto.

Oh dear :(  If that was the ROH, I'm sure they would have done their best to find them some other seats: I've seen it happen at some performances.

It was for a different performance so maybe not!

I inadvertently did a bit of seat changing some months ago. Got myself comfortable in my SC seat. About 3minutes before the performance a couple came in looking at their tickets. The man said, very politely 'i think you're in my seat'. I took my ticket out of my pocket and confirmed I was in the right seat. The man got an usher who looked at our tickets and, embarrassingly, I suddenly realised my ticket, which I had taken from my pocket, was for a previous performance. The correct ticket was sitting comfortably in my bag. Profuse apologies all round, and the couple, on their first visit , were good company.

We had an incident recently when after already moving people further along the row so we could get our seats someone came to say we were in their seats.  She showed us the tickets which were our seat numbers.  Despite my rather poor eyesight I picked out that although they were the seats they were for the following week.  I have to say we felt very sorry for them as they were all dressed up for a night out with no doubt travel and dinner costs and would have do the same the following week.

  13. Recently I turned up to take my rather pricey ROH seat - birthday gift from DH - to find someone in the seat.  It was just before 7.30pm but time to settle before curtain up.  I had to get an usher to speak with them as they said they had a ticket.  They said the same to the usher but when asked to show the ticket said their seat was elsewhere - thankfully they just walked off but no apology.  Everyone around was quite shocked at just how brazen she was.

  14. Not dance related but DD plays piano and a number of years of grades and not having the technique to play the piano as I had expected (only able to do scales and her exam pieces and very poor at sight reading) I discussed this with her teacher and we gave grades a break and she started to actually learn to play the piano.  Unfortunately the teacher moved and we didn't find another one.  However after a break she started playing again last summer and was able to sight read well enough to play pieces.  She started back with lessons in September with the plan to just play but after a few weeks asked me to buy a grade book and is making great progress.  The right teacher with the right attitude is so important.  The first teacher accepted the need to back off grades and the new one has inspired her to take them up again!  Maybe the new year is a good time to reassess.

I am assuming if you auditioned in January & got a No I can't imagine much would change or would you still have a chance on the Spring course??

I wouldn't think so but you never know.  Not sure if it was RBS or Elmhurst but a full-time place was offered after summer school to someone who was a no at the audition round.  There is nothing to be lost by exposure to those who are on audition panels - one day they may see something they like that they have missed before.

On their website it says  ''Both courses offer participants an opportunity during the week to audition for The Royal Ballet School's full-time training.'' if that's any help to anyone! My DD is not a JA but would like to audition for WL in January & has applied. I just wondered on the Spring course is it a formal audition like they do in January or do they just observe you throughout the week??

Yes but if you look in the details of each course underneath it notes this for Hong Kong only.  My understanding about a full time audition is that it is not a separate one but if you are interested they will look at you throughout the week.

  17. It would appear to be similar to a summer school week with one class of 28 in each year group but mixed girls and boys, with more girls than boys, so slightly less places.  Those on the wait list should hear at the end of next week if they have managed to get a place.  Not sure if Associates were actively encouraged to apply (as with summer school where both Associates and those offered places at WL were encouraged to apply or offered places) or if they are also auditioning for full-time places.  The information is contradictory as to whether both the London and Hong Kong course participants have the opportunity to audition or just the Hong Kong ones.  The spring course takes place well after the finals for WL however they were still offering places at the summer school last year.

Dd has also done Easter Ballet Boosts, again large groups and she has encountered some of the same teachers (Wayne Sleep for one) and again felt she gained something from the course.

Lots of cross-over between Ballet Boost and Dance Forward with other good teachers such as Stephen Beagley and Begoña Cao.  While I want DD to get good technical instruction at a course I think it is the overall experience that they give that makes us go for the ones we do.  The one time I have been disappointed with a parent watch session at the end of a course was a demonstration of the work that had been taught by an RBS Associates teacher.  I know she is a great teacher but the choreographed piece was below the ability of the class so I am not sure they got too much out of it.
