  7. 22 NOVEMBER 2012 STATEMENT FROM THE ROYAL OPERA HOUSE Following today’s announcement by the BBC Trust regarding the appointment of Tony Hall as the next Director-General of the BBC, Simon Robey, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Royal Opera House, has made the following statement: “I was not surprised when the BBC turned to Tony to lead them through their current difficulties. They see, as we do, his qualities of leadership and his depth of relevant experience. I can think of nobody better able to bring stability back to the BBC. “Tony has been a truly distinguished Chief Executive of the Royal Opera House. He has been a tremendous and inspiring force for good. The ROH he will leave in March is very different to the one he took over in 2001. We have a world-class senior team, both artistic and non-artistic, led by Antonio Pappano, Kasper Holten and Kevin O'Hare. Our artistic standards and reputation have never been higher and are unsurpassed around the world. Many, many more people see the extraordinary work of both companies through audience development programmes, ticket pricing initiatives and digital and cinema distribution. We have a very large and impactful education and community engagement programme and we are now a beacon of best practice in the arts sector. We are financially stable and we have changed the mix of our funding so that our ACE grant (now down from 40% to about 25% of our income) and our philanthropic revenue is broadly in balance. Tony deserves credit for all of this and we now face the future, with its inevitable challenges and opportunities, with strong foundations and very broad and loyal support. “Speaking personally, I will miss him tremendously. He has been an outstanding colleague and friend, as I know he has been to many others at the Royal Opera House. “We will turn immediately to finding a worthy successor. I am confident that this exceptional place will continue to be led by an exceptional person. “There will be good occasions to celebrate Tony's extraordinary contribution to the Opera House over the coming weeks and, of course, we all look forward to welcoming him back to the opera and ballet house he loves so much as a treasured member of our audience for years to come.” Antonio Pappano, Music Director of The Royal Opera added “Tony has been the most wonderful advocate for both the Royal Opera House and opera more generally. He has grabbed every opportunity to enable us to get opera way beyond the Opera House auditorium into homes and cinemas around the world. “He’s been a great friend and colleague and whilst this is a fantastic opportunity for him to return to the BBC - and I can think of no better person for the BBC - we will miss him hugely here.” Kasper Holten, Director of Opera said “Congratulations to the BBC. They are very lucky. Tony is the most inspirational leader I have ever worked for. He will be sorely missed at the ROH and by me personally, but I am excited for him about this, and I am sure he will do a fantastic job. “Tony's importance for Royal Opera House cannot be underestimated and he has managed to create an incredible platform for us to do our artistic work and take opera forward.” Kevin O’Hare, Director of The Royal Ballet said “Tony’s genuine love for ballet and dance has been a huge advantage for The Royal Ballet. He’s done so much, not only for this Company, but for dance in general through the Dance Review and support for the sector. I feel privileged to have worked with him, both in my previous roles and now as Director of The Royal Ballet. He’s been an inspiration and a great support to me over the years, and has been fundamental to our programme of new initiatives to bring ballet to a wider audience. He’s also been a great friend to me and to many people in the building. We will all miss him.” -ENDS-
  8. Lindsay This is being sorted out. The reality is that a committee runs the forum and that means that forum governance gets discussed. It's not as instant as it was in some respects. When somebody ignores moderation (which you did) there is speed by one person to do something - in this case it turned out to be me who hid your message and closed the thread to avoid further complication. Then the way forward gets discussed and there has been that discussion last night and this morning and I think the way forward identified and which will be sorted out later today. Mods have other things to do so its not instant. If you wish to discuss this further then by all means email me at bruce@ballet.co.uk and I will make sure all mods are aware. This thread is now being locked. I ask you not to open another on this subject. Thanks. Postcript: I don't see myself as an active moderator the way the others are. I've done my bit! But I do have the rights necessary to intervene should I get there first - and that I did. I find myself responding now because, as I say, others are off doing the stuff of their life. All note - I'm not trying to climb back in the saddle of keeping the place in order!

Details of all nominees can be found at http://www.criticscircle.org.uk from 5pm on 9th November. The National Dance Awards have been organised by the Dance Section of the Critics’ Circle in each year since 2000 and they celebrate the vigour and variety of Britain’s thriving dance culture. They are the only awards given by the body of professional dance critics in the UK. They are presented by the Dance Section of the Critics’ Circle, which brings together more than 50 dance writers and critics. In announcing the awards, the chairman of the Dance Section, Graham Watts OBE, said: ‘this year we have had many nominations from over 30 active dance critics, who are watching and reviewing dance on a regular and frequent basis up and down the United Kingdom. Collectively they have put forward over 250 dancers, choreographers and companies for consideration and so the final shortlists are already very much the elite of 2012. The Awards Committee wishes to express grateful thanks to our sponsors, without whom the event would not be possible; The Place for its continued support; dance critics for giving their time to ensure the best possible list of nominees; and, above all, the companies, choreographers and performers for giving us such a rich variety of choice. It has been a bumper year. We look forward to announcing the award winners on 28th January 2013.’ ENDS Notes: (1) To qualify for the NDA in 2012 performances will have been given between 1st September 2011 and 31st August 2012 (2) The Committee for the NDA in 2012 is: Zoe Anderson, Debra Craine, Luke Jennings, Josephine Leask, Judith Mackrell, Neil Norman, Stuart Sweeney, Graham Watts and Lyndsey Winship
  12. Well I've opened my diary *and* made an actual decision! The 6 Jan sounds great - look forward to it.
  13. Liam Scarlett's piece seemed like 'standard' neo-classical with a Tryst (Wheeldon) pdd in the middle. Confident and competent work but still don't know what his voice is. Must have looked sharper on American dancers. Infra: Opie animations are a continual distraction. There is some wonderful movement but somehow I never get drawn in to a deeper level - the movement caries no emotional tug. It's astounding, but all surface. Excellent to see Eric Underwood to the fore. Wheeldon: The evenings triumph for me - effortless, deep and beautiful without being twee. Strong cast, great custom score and best designs of the evening too. And one of the best ever endings to a ballet. Scarlett has a strong following so I suspect others will rate it higher. Pleased to say that Jann Parry is reviewing for DanceTabs so if you think I talk tosh you may do better there!
  14. Thanks everybody for all the responses. In parallel with starting this thread I also contacted the wonderful Bob Kimber. Bob publishes the Ballet Chronicles - in the words of the web page: "This is the site for Ballet Chronicles, which is a unique work detailing, season by season, all ballets ever performed, at home or abroad, by The Royal Ballet, The Birmingham Royal Ballet and The Royal Ballet School, from when they first started public performances to the present day. I have included all full length ballets, one act ballets, and divertissements. I have also included details of all Galas performed by the three institutions." And you can find it here: http://www.sylphide....cles v2007.html Bob responded thus: "I have looked at Ballet Chronicles and also at a copy of a programme archive that I hold and can find no trace of a Royal Ballet Main Stage performance only the Dance Bites Tour of 1997/98 and Sadler's Wells in the following season, 1998/99. However, it was seen on the Main Stage in 1972 but not in a performance by The Royal. It was performed by the New Group and it remained in their rep. and the Sadler's Well Royal Ballet's rep. for another 20 years. If it helps, off the cuff I too would have agreed with a ROH performance too, but then, my memory is not as good as it once was !" Since getting Bob's response I also heard about the New Group performances from elsewhere and I gather Monica Mason danced it with them! Conclusions: 1) I'm bonkers in thinking I saw RB perform Las Hermanas at Covent Garden in the 90's. 2) ROH were incorrect in saying RB haven't performed it since 1994 - it looks like it was last performed in 1998 (at Sadler's Wells). 3) ROH were incorrect in saying its never been seen at the ROH. I actually think everybody is aware now of this history, including RB. I find it interesting seeing just how much effort it takes to track down what happened not so long ago. Also saddened that my brain got it wrong!
  15. I think its all a bit of a buggers muddle - ROH Collections, which should be definitive when it has the info, lists the Sadler's performance as by RB. The first time I saw Las Hermanas was with BRB and Jo Cipolla was the oily and chilling lead. Never seen anobody else as good as the man.
  16. I thought it might be best/easiest to start a new thread for this. In the press release for 2012/13 ROH say of Las Hermanas: "...not performed by The Royal Ballet since 1994 and never before seen at the Royal Opera House..." I could swear blind I'd seen it at ROH with Nicky Davies as the youngest girl. It came up with a critic and they too felt it had been danced on the main stage. If you look at ROH Collections they say 2 performances were given in 1998 (not 1994 as the press release) - in Dartford and at Sadler's Wells. And then I though that you bright sparks would know(!)... (As an aside: I'd urge all to see Hermanas - including young choreographers. We need more short dramatic works.)

  21. No time to say more than this Tweet: Saw Michael Clark's latest show @BarbicanCentre last night w Jarvis Cocker belting it out. WhoooHoo - Go! (& much better than Carbon Life) Well I will add that Clark's dancers are glorious and if you have never seen the company and like ballet you should go. If you warmed to the Royal Ballet's Carbon Life then I think Clark does the rock and ballet thing rather better...
  22. Well I did and have just put up some thoughts: http://www.dancetabs...but-birmingham/ Hoping to get some pictures of them both in Swan Lake - at the moment the images show them in other works.
  23. Not sure if this has gone up before, but thought I'd shine a light on an interview not available for so much longer... Tamara Rojo on BBC Radio 3 Night Waves last Thursday - 8 min interview starts 31 mins in. Availble for 3 more days on Listen Again: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01n1t6w Wide ranging and interesting I think.
