  1. A friend and I were saying exactly the same thing last night. She should have been "Damed" years ago.
  2. I've changed the title to include the company name as there are other companies doing the Nutcracker in London this year (ENB & BRB of course!)
  3. Marion was a star when I first started watching ballet and she is still a star now. Very best wishes to Marion for her (fortunately semi-) retirement.
  4. Marion Tait to step down as Assistant Director of Birmingham Royal Ballet Photo credit: Andrew Ross Marion Tait CBE will step down from her role as Assistant Director of Birmingham Royal Ballet on 31 December 2020. Marion will still be very much part of the Birmingham Royal Ballet family and, from January, will be working part time, rehearsing and coaching the Company dancers, continuing to impart her years of skill and wisdom. Marion said: The present situation with Covid-19, has made it impossible for me to fulfil such a crucial role at Birmingham Royal Ballet at this very important time in its history. I would have loved to have carried on supporting Carlos in his exciting vision for the Company and, in a way, I will, as I continue to rehearse and coach the dancers and try to be as useful to the Company as I can! I shall still feel part of the Birmingham Royal Ballet family, which is something I am proud to be. Born in London, Marion joined the Royal Ballet touring company (now Birmingham Royal Ballet) at just 17, rising to the rank of Principal and dancing the lead ballerina roles in all the classics. In 1995 she became Birmingham Royal Ballet's Ballet Mistress, and for many years has taught and rehearsed the Company. Until recently she performed character roles such as a scene-stealing Carabosse in The Sleeping Beauty and The Wicked Stepmother in David Bintley’s Cinderella, which was created for her in 2010. She was made an OBE in 1992 and a CBE in the 2003 Queen's Birthday Honours list. Marion has twice been nominated for Olivier Awards (Juliet in Romeo and Juliet, 1994, and Hagar in Pillar of Fire, 1995), was named Dancer of the Year 1994 and that same year also received the Evening Standard Ballet Award for Outstanding Performance. Most recently she was awarded the De Valois Award for Outstanding Achievement 2019 by the Critics Circle National Dance Awards. Marion is Patron of The Edge arts centre in Solihull. Marion assisted Desmond Kelly in directing Birmingham Royal Ballet's artistic team for Ballet Changed My Life - Ballet Hoo!, the education project documented on Channel 4 during September and October 2006, for which she was presented with a special award at the Critics' Circle National Dance Awards in 2008.
  5. Doesn’t look like it at that length. Alternative - if you look at first part right to end and leave the screen 3 small images appear. One is the link to part 2.
  6. I found it quite hard to see the 2 sections of the performance and I have no idea why it was split up in this way but I think that although it looks as though I am taking you to the same page on the website twice it should take you to the 2 links. Part 1: https://www.brb.org.uk/brb-at-30 Part 2: https://www.brb.org.uk/brb-at-30
  7. So I was glued to my screen at 8pm on Thursday for an evening celebrating the 30th Anniversary of Sadler's Wells Royal Ballet becoming Birmingham Royal Ballet. The evening started with a zoomed speech from a Birmingham councillor saying what the company meant to the city and as well as the performed pieces it included interviews with 2 of the participants from the memorable Ballet Hoo! and about Dance Track. Carlos Acosta introduced the evening and spoke lovingly about the City of Birmingham, the company he now directs and its dancers and heritage repertoire. The dance started with Ben Stevenson's duet End of Time danced by Yijing Zhang and Brandon Lawrence. It is a very quiet duet (inspired by On the Beach) about the last 2 remaining humans. The chemistry between Yijing and Brandon was palpable and their performance can only be described as sublime. Despite the depressing subject matter I found it filled with not only yearning but hope and I was so uplifted by it that I have now watched it about a gazillion times since Thursday evening. Yijing is one of those dancers who seems to have a serene other-worldliness on stage (although she is actually a very vivid actor) and I think this evening shows that she and Brandon could be THE partnership to watch if they are paired together more often (I live in hopes). After Brandon's powerhouse performance of Liebestod in the Lazuli Sky programme we were treated to Tzu-Chao Chou in the same role. The same solo and 2 very different dancers. I loved Tzu-Chao's intense and expressive performance. Somehow watching it again yesterday it reminded me of the Faun in Nijinsky's L'Après-Midi. It was as though he was discovering himself for the first time. After an interval we finally got to see Majismo a Spanish-influenced piece for 4 couples. It was a delight to watch and showed all the dancers at their sparkling best. Both Yijing (this time partnered by Alex Yap) and Tzu-Chao were in this piece. It's frothy with some virtuoso choreography for the gentlemen of the company. Standouts for me were the always miraculous Momoko Hirata and the sublime Miki Mizutani. This performance is available till next Thursday and is well worth seeking out. So far, within the confines of these challenging times, I have greatly enjoyed BRB's performances but I have to hope against hope that Carlos delivers on his loving words and we can see again some of the wonderful ballets already in the company's rep.

  9. Which is not entirely accurate. Of the current roster the following dancers have Elmhurst on their bio (around 10% of the current company): Rosanna Ely Ryan Felix Miles Gilliver Emma Price Hamish Scott Joseph Taylor Other dancers, now left, also came through Elmhurst including James Barton and Nathanael Skelton who were the first 2 accepted into the company after the relationship with the school was announced. If you look at the bios throughout the company the dancers come from very diverse backgrounds and different schools.
