Jan McNulty
Very sad news today that Carl Davis has passed away at the age of 86. He composed for many genres but will be remembered by fans of Northern Ballet for his scores for A Simple Man and Christmas Carol. He also wrote the score for David Bintley's version of Cyrano for Birmingham Royal Ballet. https://www.theguardian.com/music/2023/aug/03/bafta-winning-composer-carl-davis-dies-aged-86 A personal recollection is that people could walk through the original Mersey Tunnel (Queensway) in 1994 to celebrate the tunnel's 50th anniversary. At the midway point Carl Davis was conducting a small group from the RLPO to keep us entertained as we shuffled past due to the immense crowds doing the walk.
Anna C
Oh, that’s sad. I’m currently rewatching the marvellous BBC Pride and Prejudice from 1995, and part of what makes the series so perfect is Carl Davis’s wonderful score. RIP.
alison
Yes, I never realised that he'd written it. I always remembered Melvin Tan on the fortepiano, but not the composer. There was a tribute to him on Radio 3's In Tune programme last night, but I had to leave to get up to London, so missed it.
