WoodlandGladeFairy Posted January 17, 2017 Posted January 17, 2017 (edited) Saw this story on the BBC website and I was like couldn't quite believe it and just had to share it Russian region debates Nutcracker 'occult' row - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/blogs-news-from-elsewhere-38652926 The authorities in a major region of Siberia are to discuss accusations by a local archbishop that The Nutcracker ballet is not a children's Christmas treat but rather a "work of the occult". Jan McNulty Posted January 17, 2017 Posted January 17, 2017 Ismene Brown had an item on her blog about this last week: http://ismeneb.com/blogs-list/170112-The-Nutcracker-is-occult-declares-Russian-bishop.html
loveclassics Posted January 18, 2017 Posted January 18, 2017 Can't wait to see this new version with its 'werewolf Prince'. Sounds like a perfect role for Polunin!
stucha Posted January 18, 2017 Posted January 18, 2017 As I read it, this is a traditional production. The there is no werewolf Prince. The archbishop has characterised the role as a shapeshifter (also commonly translated as werewolf) and therefore in the realm of magic and not Christianity.
Melody Posted January 18, 2017 Posted January 18, 2017 I almost hope a ballet company tries to perform a Harry Potter ballet there. Those clerics would have a cow. 1
