Balanchines Jewels 50th Anniversary New York 20-23 July 2017

Recommended Posts

Paris Opera Ballet and The Bolshoi are to collaborate with New York City Ballet in 5 performances next summer, 20-23 July 2017, to celebrate 50 years of Balanchine's trilogy Jewels.  POB will dance Emeralds, NYCB Rubies and the Bolshoi Diamonds.  Later in the run NYCB and the Bolshoi will swap.  Each company will use it's own costumes, so Lacroix for POB, Karinska for NYCB and Zaitseva for The Bolshoi. Should be a fantastic treat to see this!!

Maybe if it is a huge success they will repeat it next year in Paris.  That too would be lovely.  (I would definitely go.)  Then they could use the POB Jewels production settings as opposed to the NYCB ones.  That way also it would be more likely to be filmed ... as both POB and the Bolshoi are cinema regulars ... as we all know ... and both are overseen by/in partnership with French companies.  Also one of the rare live recordings of NYCB in recent times was made by French film-makers in Paris in July when the full company was appearing for three weeks at the Chatelet.

NYCB are missing a trick on the cinema relay front IMHO.

Helen, the lovely Ellen Barr (once a NYCB dancer now NYCB's Head of Media Projects) has said that NYCB does not do the cinema relays because of cost (e.g., creative rights, etc.)  They took a drubbing I understand with that last live relay of Balanchine's Nutcracker.  I remember seeing it here in the Vue Cinema in islington and there being exactly eleven people in that large venue.  (The comment about the cost is also similar to that made by the wonderful Ms. Rojo vis a vis the filming of Khan's Giselle.)  I'm sure NYCB would do more live relays if they could.  So much is filmed in house at the NYCB - (the filming production facilities were built into the NYS Theater complex when it was refreshed and renamed the 'Koch Theater) - and those in house films - or certainly many of them - are freely available in the Robbins Collection at the NYPL.  Also NYCB do have that regular programme of short seasonal promo films that they put on line.  Perhaps they will do a documentary about this special Jewels anniversary programme as it is under the Lincoln Center Festival banner.  That would be grand - and perhaps more likely - in terms of DVD sales - as there are already a number of full Jewels recordings on the market.  Just think of all the original footage (which exists at NYPL) and freshly made interviews with those creators surviving that might be included.
