MAB
Art critic and ballet fan Brian Sewell has died. Never afraid to take an unfashionable stance against the more ridiculous aspects of a lot of modern art, he was what I felt a critic should be: completely truthful and with an encyclopaedic knowledge of his subject. He started talking to me at a Bolshoi performance once when sitting in the row in front, such a very nice man, so sorry he's gone.

Jacqueline
Just heard this on the news. I was a great admirer of Brian Sewell, I liked his attitude towards life, people and animals. His knowledge was indeed, encyclopaedic but he was never 'up himself', like so many critics, or pretending to be something he wasn't. He just said what he thought and usually he was right, not just about art. R.I.P.

MAB
And he loved his dogs I believe :-( He wrote most movingly about the dogs he had owned and when he had a heart attack he also wrote compassionately about fellow patients in his NHS ward. The acerbic critic was his professional persona, but when he wrote on other subjects a far warmer character emerged.
Lisa O`Brien
I just think it`s OK to show respect to someone who has died without necessarily liking their work, that`s all.
