  1. I watched a recent Insights where Laura Morera coached Annette Buvoli for Fairy Godmother and at one point she pushed a shoulder back to add some epaulment and said something along the lines of 'There's your Cecchetti' and I died a little inside. Sorry everyone but sticking a bit of epaulment in as a nice feature to have isn't what it's about. And this is in my view, part of the root of the problem. That Insights from above, worth watching further to hear what Wendy Ellis Somes has to say & Kevin O'Hare, the 'tricky' footwork isn't actually so tricky if it was part of daily classwork (Cecchetti again). Dunno about the Vaganova. Ashton's early training (remember he began as an adult) was steeped in Cecchetti, which was steeped in / based upon the line of great dancing masters who had gone before. The Cecchetti Manual is called 'A Manual of Classical Theatrical Dancing'. I did note William Bracewell point out in one interview his early training was Cecchetti based. But how many others have ever even had a flavour of it in their training?
  2. Mayara Magri was Fairy Winter in the cine broadcast, don't think she's particularly tall? The fairy costumes actually looked quite lovely when you saw them close to, far more transparent than from a distance if that makes any sense, yes I thought The Fairy Winter one was the most beautiful. The detail tends to get lost seen from afar. And there lies a problem with stage costumes of course.
  3. So you can sit on the same throne as the Queen Mother did? (And all the other royals before and since!)
  4. It can be strident and discordant? But that's all part of why it's wonderful music.
  5. And yet... Swan Lake? https://www.spectator.co.uk/article/liam-scarlett-s-enduring-legacy-royal-ballet-s-swan-lake-reviewed/
  6. EDITOR'S NOTE: This thread has been branched off from the thread discussing the retirement of Laura Morera as a Principal with the Royal Ballet - some of the posts referred to are still in that thread: Letter from Ashton to 'Mim' (Rambert) when he was with Rubinstein company. "She (ie Nijinska) gives a brilliant class, very difficult and never dull & in doing it one realises over and over again that the best system of training is obviously Ceccetti (sic) (I can't spell his name, disgrace) her arms are I should say entirely based on his and her barre is the same ..." And therin lies the basis for many Ashton ballets and the reason why his work is seen as 'difficult' by many? Twee? Symphonic Variations?
  7. My thoughts on reading that exactly. Such a long career and excluded from so much because... why? She wasn't seen as the right fit?
  8. i think your 'ad hoc' bunch sounded delightful. Very personal. I love getting those flowers in box that you arrange yourself. The big arrangements are so glam but yes, loadsa money and I often wonder who has the vases to match?
  9. Actually here's another. I like Don Q. Good old rep war horse with singalong tunes. I'm not ashamed to to say it! Lots of fun in a world which needs a lot more fun. 😊
  10. i meant in time for the announcement of the new season! Hopefully she will be dancing. And an excuse to post a clip of her 🤩
  11. Yes. However I suppose it was a considerable investment so has to have another outing.
  12. Oh they were the days hey? Though travel on the tube might be a problem in tulle and taffeta. https://youtu.be/kAaR-pRPPJI
  13. Well, I look forward to seeing who is the lucky couple! https://www.roh.org.uk/photos/40729020523
  14. Maybe for sheer enjoyment? I LOVE that coach with its pumpkin flesh buttoned interior!
  15. I have grown to love the music too. The more I listen the more I think it pure magic.
  16. 'No performance schedule aviailable' yet? And NB Important information This performance contains one gunshot. They hope. 😉
  17. I can see why financially it happens, the big names sell tickets and then are put on DVD for 'posterity' and further sales but there is so much talent beyond those. I can't be alone in wanting to see others at the local flea pit! By the way, given that Rhapsody is one of next season's offerings, thought I'd mention Marquee TV currently has it 'free to view'. I think it was the last pre-lockdown cine broadcast with: Natalia Osipova Steven McRae Emma Maguire Yasmine Naghdi Beatrix Stix-Brunell Luca Acri Tristan Dyer Nicol Edmonds Benjamin Ella Kevin Emerton Marcelino Sambé If anyone can't find it please feel free to message me for the link.
  18. It is apparently International Dance Day today 29th April. Enjoy!
  19. So no need for Francesca Hayward to knock herself out trying it! I can see why she's not keen, a huge amount of work & effort for few performances and there are others already in line.
