  1. Thanks, Sim. I did listen and really enjoyed it! He comes across as a modest and interesting young man! I love interviews/articles/behind the scenes information, so this really interested me.
  2. I do like that we are seeing little differences. It makes it much more interesting.
  3. Ah, glad to know I didn't miss anything else. One thing I am pleased about is that in the first PDD, the bit where the prince holds out his hand the the Sugar plum steps towards him, turns around and then does the same from the other side and then twice more was that particular choreography. There is another version where instead of turning round (sorry, I don't know the technical name!) the prince pushes the Sugar Plum around with her leg extended (that's in the Bonelli/Cuthbertson version). I really do not like that as much! You can see the bit I am talking here from the recent stream: https://www.facebook.com/royaloperahouse/videos/557214405822390
  4. Glad you enjoyed Will and Fumi and the performances you saw - I loved the one I saw too, it was just so beautiful! I wonder if you are talking about the end of the Coda? The bit where some dancers go round the stage in opposite directions and jump occasionally? Will Bracewell did turns in the centre and Fumi danced around him? If so, this is an alternative variation I have seen used before. In fact, Federico Bonelli did this in the 2016 production that is on dvd with Lauren Cuthbertson, If it's not this one, is there another difference I missed? Wouldn't surprise me if I did as I was rather spellbound!
  5. Ditto. I can't find anything. I like to read different opinions - even if I don't agree, they are most welcome as long as it is constructive criticism and politely phrased and certainly not personal to the way the performers look. Even when people criticise my favourite dancers, I do not care one bit (as long as they are polite and respectful in their words). However, what I do not enjoy is overwhelming negativity for the sake of it. Nothing is perfect and for me, if I sit and 'nitpick' then I ruin my own enjoyment - so I stopped doing that a long time ago. It really is defeating the whole point of spending money to enjoy myself if all I look for is things that I think could be better. When I'm paying a lot of money for tickets, it defeats the point of me going really. Saying that, I have no problem expressing my honest opinion. I really enjoyed Nutcracker when I went. It was magical and so pretty (though I do agree about the snowflakes and did count them as there seemed to be less than I thought there should be. I thought - oh, perhaps performers are ill). My overwhelming emotion was a warm feeling and excitement. I would go again but alas, time and budget did not permit that. I adored Kaneko/Bracewell - loved what they did with the roles and their interpretations were different from ones I have been familiar with and loved previously (there is room for many individual interpretations, imo, and I appreciate them all in different ways). I really do not mind about whether the shows are 'authentic'. to original choreography To me, it's what I like. For example, I adore Liam Scarlett's version of Swan Lake and prefer it to others. That's certainly not a view most critics have, but I do not care. It's what I like that matters to me.
  6. I was in the stalls on Thursday evening and two people nearby kept coughing. One woman had the most dreadful cough - sounded like bronchitis. I did find it irritating and felt like going and giving her my unopened bottle of mineral water. She wasn't that near to me, but it echoed. She made no attempt to disguise her cough. I always take a bottle of water in with me in case I get a tickle in my throat. I question whether the lady who had the bad cough should have attended, especially as she coughed in all the quieter bits! It really sounded awful!
  7. I totally agree with Nina99 and Angela's comments. I absolutely loved this live at ROH this evening. For some reason, everything seemed to sparkle more this year. The sets were gorgeous! I've seen Nutcracker so many times at ROH and for some reason, everything appeared brighter and more grand. Of course, it couldn't have been! The costumes looked gorgeous and actually, the wigs looked lovely from where I was. I thought Joseph Sissens and Sae Maeda were delightful. Ms Maeda was very sweet and showed the wonder at everything she saw as Clara. Sissens looked dashing and was delightful - though I felt he may have been a little nervous to start with? However, he soon settled into the role of Hans Peter. The Arabian dance was as good as I knew it would be and certainly was popular with the audience. I still prefer the version with three male dancers though. Mayara Magri was stunning! She brought a real sophistication and technical brilliance to the role of the Rose Fairy - she was delightful. I thought her escorts danced beautifully - some of the best I've seen! Fumi Kaneko and William Bracewell were gorgeous together. Fumi's sugar plum was sensitive and delicate and very graceful. I noticed she interpreted some of the choreography differently from some of my favourite performances and I really liked what she did. Will Bracewell was a sensitive partner and his solos were excellent - graceful and technically brilliant. He was a dashing prince to Fumi's stunning Sugar Plum. I really loved them. I did miss Gary Avis as Drosselmeyer. Bennet Gartside was brilliant, of course, but Avis is just magical. Funnily enough Avis really made Stahlbaum stand out for me - is there anything this man does that is not exceptional? It was lovely to have so many RBS children on stage again - it really does light up the first act for me. The orchestra was on top form and the audience were well behaved, though I did feel they (edit: the audience, not the orchestra!) were a little flat at times? That may be just me though, as I clapped my hands red raw. It was a magical evening. I loved every second - even the Christmas tree behaved.
  8. On my way home now from ROH. Loved it all. Tried to upload some half decent photos but the files are too big to upload - no idea how to resolve that one! It really was magical tonight. Will review later on. Bravo to the whole cast!
  9. No! I know ir happens sometimes, but that must have been very difficult for her debut.
  10. I think she is amazing in the role! I do prefer the three male dancers though.
  11. I agree, Dawnstar. Though I love Nutcracker, it is not my favourite ballet - it certainly doesn't move me like Swan Lake, Romeo and Juliet and Giselle, for example. However, it wouldn't be Christmas for me without it and it is pure magic. It's fun, visually spectacular and I love the Hans Peter/Clara PDD and the Sugar Plum/prince PDD is one of my favourites. It's very entertaining and though I hope to leave ROH on Thursday night full of Christmas excitement and wonder, I won't be shedding a tear as I may have done in the aforementioned ballets. Nutcracker, for me, is a 'feel good' ballet that leaves me with a little happy smile on my face.
  12. I asked customer services this last summer and was told no more as the Nunez/Muntagirov one was quite recent. I was not impressed but hope last summer's cinema relay will be on the new streaming service soon?
  13. ROH just posted this on FB and if this video clip of Fumi Kaneko rehearsing is anything to go by, Thursday is looking good!!! https://www.facebook.com/royaloperahouse/videos/851368895903098
  14. I'm so envious you went to the rehearsal - I work in a school and am not allowed time off during the school term, so couldn't go. I am glad you enjoyed the rehearsal. I'm going on Thursday to ROH to see this cast. I stupidly booked this date thinking the cinema relay was the 13th, so am a bit annoyed with myself, as I'd loved to have gone to the cinema relay and the live performance the week after too. I am very excited though as this is the cast I wanted to see most (I'd happily see any of them though!)
  15. Agreed. My favourite Clara and Hans Peter pairing.
  16. Totally agree with you. I found her Clara to be absolutely mesmerising - though there are many other excellent Claras, she is my favourite.
  17. Agreed. I saw her second performance and it definitely was not the confident woman I usually see. On her Instagram account, she talked about what a struggle the ballet was for her, with a photo of her being carried to her dressing room - she clearly was exhausted and it did make me feel concerned.. I got the impressions that she was saying she was just really pleased to have managed to get through the ballet. It maybe that this is just not for her, or maybe she will develop more stamina? I have to say that I did love some parts of her performance though - I came away feeling happy with the whole experience, though a little underwhelmed here and there. I did enjoy watching her and Bracewell (I love his Siegfried and am a huge fan of his performances - so maybe my positive experience was influenced by my love of his dancing?) I'd definitely see her in Swan Lake again.
  18. I really enjoyed this! Richardson and Dias make a lovely couple and I enjoyed their pas de deux (it's one of my favourites). I thought they looked very accomplished for such young dancers The other segments were great too - ballet school segment was wonderful. Gary Avis has such a likeable quality snd I always enjoy watching him teach. Kate Shipway did a great job presenting - her knowledge really showed and she comes across as a genuine and enthusiastic person. I'd love to see even more of these insights.
  19. I would agree about the brass section and the orchestra generally. They just get better and better! I gather the King and Queen Consort enjoy ballet, unlike our late Queen.
  20. I was wondering just last Saturday exactly where the Royal Box was and thought it must be there. I was in a box on the opposite side, though much nearer the centre. Our view was a little restricted (watching far stage left meant I had to sit forward a bit) but from the Royal Box the view must be pretty restricted!
  21. There are always exceptions to rules and you don't need to apologise - we all make mistakes or aren't aware of something. I think you are right - you would be extremely unlikely to see a First Soloist being cast in a principal role for a single ballet cinema relay. Bracewell was an exception because, in my mind, he was always destined for the top (injury and Covid delayed his promotion)- quite obviously so, in my eyes, not that I'm biased in any way . . .
  22. I'm sorry to hear this - I'm so disappointed for you. I was fortunate enough to see Morera at the friends rehearsal and she was amazing, so I understand how upset you must be. I do hope Morera is ok.
  23. Thank you for posting this. I loved it. I don't know why, but this I find quite beautiful, whereas the Diamond Celebration lacked the sparkle of this performance. I like the lines of the costumes, which show off the dancers' fluidity and grace.
