  1. Aha - that's the third person who has told me 10 days then:)
  2. Congratulations to all the yeses and sorry to the nos - I have been away for a day or so but I see lots of news to share by everyone. Good luck to anyone waiting for Elmhurst. Someone told me that their results always arrive 10 days after audition, but I don't know if that's true (although actually two people told me this)..... x
  3. Well done to your DD ebony - what lovely news. We loved The Hammond and thought it such a friendly welcoming vibrant school. It is the furthest from us though so not ideal in that respect. My DS is sorted somewhere nearer now so we won't be going back for the funding audition next week..
  4. Sorry to hear that abitwornout. The chances for MAs must be good as your DD made it to the final. Wishing you luck for that - when do the MA places come out? Good luck to all others waiting......keep us posted......
  5. I am sorry you are having these difficulties Katymac. It is hard to have your decision questioned when you have thought so long about what is the right decision. None of us have a crystal ball and we can only make decisions about what is right for us now. I think the difficulty of life, particularly in the UK I think, is that people have a perception that academics are success. I understand that in Germany more "practical" children are celebrated and encouraged but in the UK we measure everything in academic grades. Who is more "successful"? The plump academic child who leaves school with great exams, the prospect of a good career but who will never embrace exercise and spend all her adult life overweight and unfit (this is me!). Or the child who leaves school with a good work ethic and a healthy exercised body which will probably last that way until she is 95? If the latter child is very lucky, she will be able to encourage her own children to be active and healthy. This country needs a mind reset on what "success" is I think. It's not all about academics.
  6. I wish all the girls luck for the next week of waiting for news. The waiting is the worst part. I won't post as to when the news came or whether it was a small or big or medium envelope etc but if anyone does want to know that PM me and I will tell you!
  7. My DS has only just done grade 3 ISTD aged 11. He also did this ISTD competition last weekend but didn't get through to the final.....
  8. Congratulations to your daughter Dreamer - exciting times. Has your DD been at another school or is this the first time she tried for WL? Either way, a great achievement - you/she must be thrilled.
  9. Thank you everyone for your congratulations. I hope the girls have a lovely day tomorrow. Both boys are London JAs yes - almost all the boy finalists were JAs - most from London.
  10. I am sorry to hear your news Vonrothbart but I suppose that, with no girl year 7s being assessed out, it was not very likely that they would take extra year 8s over the 12 they have. However, I believe that there are more places higher up the school and your GDD is obviously currently number 13 so I hope that it does become third time lucky for her.
  11. My DS has been offered a place at WL for year 7! We are thrilled and stunned and a bit anxious and we can't really believe it. And best of all, his friend from our little local dance school also has a place for year 7! So good news all round and amazing that one dance school has two boys into year 7. I hope all the year 7 girls have a lovely day tomorrow at their final audition. It was a great day for us last week and the children make a big effort with their "good luck" messages on their beds for the auditionees to see.
  12. I agree Billy it is easy to get swept along and start to think "what if......." This will be our conversation if he gets in Me - "DS - you got in!" DS - "Oh that's good" And if we don't Me - "DS - I am sorry but you didn't get in" DS - "Oh - ok. Never mind" That's not to say he wouldn't LOVE to go but just that we know that there are lots of options if we don't. Basically he just loves to dance and he knows he can either do this at a ballet school or in the living room at home. Either way, if he is dancing, he is happy!
  13. DS and I had a lovely day at WL yesterday. The sun was shining (in parts!) and WL looked as lovely as ever. All the students were so smart and friendly. It was quite a long afternoon waiting for him to finish but happily passed chatting to other parents and parents of children already at WL who provided very helpful insights into what life is like there. The next week will seem like a long one waiting for results I fear, but he can't do any more now and will have to wait and see:) Either way, it has all been a great experience and he has made some lovely friends along the way in JAs, especially those children from other countries and cultures that he would not have had the pleasure of meeting and befriending, were it not for the JA/WL experience. Good luck to everyone else waiting this week, and good luck too to the year 7 girls next week. The children already at WL put cards with messages on displayed on their beds for the auditionees to see - it's very sweet..
  14. I agree TheQuays - well put. I can answer that for myself now but that's a hard choice aged 11 isn't it?!
  15. I am really sorry if I have caused anyone upset in reading this and you are all right, the figures this year are not a guide to what might happen next year. I don't want to be lulled into a false sense of security as you say, but I am just so torn between knowing what to do for the best if we are lucky to be offered any place for next year.
  16. I have great sympathy for anyone assessed out and I am sorry if it happens to anyone on here. My DS is auditioning at the moment and from my point of view, part of the decision on where to go (if we are offered!) may be the assessment procedure. So, without naming any names of course, I would be interested if anyone knows how many years 7s have been assessed out of WL or Elmhurst this year. If, say, a large number were assessed out in year 7 this would influence our decision I think....
  17. Thanks to you all for replying. I'll have a chat with him then about what he might want to write if he is asked to write this sort of thing. I am sure that he will be better in the interview than on paper.......so hopefully they will get a chance to go into more detail when he is speaking to them. I am not sure about contacting the school. I am worried they might be put off by the possibility of dyslexia. If he does have it, it's pretty mild (he can read but not spell) but even so........I don't want to do anything that makes him stand out.........Interestingly though, Elmhurst said that they have quite a few children with dyslexia and I wonder whether dancing children may actually be more likely to have this issue.
  18. My DS has WL finals on Friday. I see that there is a short written task which "we hope candidates will enjoy". I am a bit worried about this. He won't enjoy a short written task as his literacy, whilst passable, is not his best subject at all. I suspect he may be dyslexic but his current school won't test for this. Does anyone know what this might be? If so would anyone be kind enough to PM me so that I might be able to put his mind at rest about what is involved? Thank you!
  19. Well done to your daugher TMT - it must be a lovely feeling to have everything sorted out and to know where she is going. I wish her all good luck and hope she has a great time at Tring
  20. If a child is assessed out of WL, say, would Elmhurst audition them even if they had missed the formal audition/application date. It seems that the appraisals are after the auditions and I am wondering how that would work. I am getting ahead of myself as DS is not even at one of these schools yet, but the appraisals system does influence if/where we would send him if offered....
  21. Hi Taxi As I understand it, yes, being accepted for Tring is an acceptance and you can go if you can pay (we can't pay so need the funding). HOWEVER that is subject to there being a boarding place. They keep places for the children who get funding, but on 6th, as you will recall, we were told there are not many boarding places left. Suggest you ring them and ask. I am not sure if you can opt to pay if you don't get funding and still be guaranteed a boarding place, therefore. As regards Elmhurst - just one more audition as virtually all the places there are funded. So I believe that if you are offered a place there it is highly likely to be funded. We are back at Elmhurst in March too. DS likes Elmhurst. There is a good documentary about Elmhurst posted on the appraisals thread on here. Worth watching...
  22. We have now heard from Hammond and Tring - both with offers to come back to the funding finals. Feeling very proud of my DS as he now has four finals. When we started this path I didn't really expect this at all. I had rehearsed in my head a little speech to him about how he had done really well etc and never mind, he can always try again another year. Now I am thinking I may need to rehearse a different little speech in my head, just in case........
  23. Thank you! Let's hope we get a yes then for Hammond. Still waiting for Tring too but it seems like it will be a longer wait for Tring. Yesterday at Hammond they said they'd send the letters out today so they are super speedy....
  24. ZooZoo

    Appraisals

Thanks for posting that. I have just spent 2 hours watching (thought I'd just watch the first 5 mins and got sucked in!). I had a tear in my eye when D had to leave Elmhurst. It seemed such a shame for him to have to leave when dancing was clearly his passion. His friends at the Comp seemed very friendly though............Hooray for the end when it all worked out for him .
  25. DS was at Hammond yesterday. He said he liked it and the audition went ok. As I understand it, at Tring it is possible to be accepted but not invited to funding OR be accepted AND invited to funding. Is that the same as at Hammond? I got the impression all are invited back to the funding audition at Hammond but I might be wrong!
