  1. I was in K and nearly everyone was on their feet - front, back and sides. Personally, I would hang the Apparatchik who decided that another minute on a curtain call would be breaking the rules. This was an exceptional performance of great Art which had so engaged hundreds of people that they were on their feet cheering. He/she seems to have got it muddled up with shift change on the processed cheese slices production belt. I want their name! Sorry, Mr. Nureyev, but our blokes are overdue their tea. Bah.
  2. I agree, Alison I was in Stalls Left and feel that a lot of the action was there. However,it is such a wonderful production that sitting on the roof would probably be okay. one of the nice things today was that the people around me appeared to be tourists and newbies to either ROH or R & J. Made me so proud to witness their enjoyment.
  3. Almost certainly one of my most emotional ballet experiences. Right up there with Ed Watson’s Mayerling. I don’t have the knowledge to talk technical so you’ll have to forgive the analogous descriptions. If Hayward and Corrales gave us a roller coaster ensemble West Side Story, Naghdi and Ball were Brief Encounter. The passionate puppy love from Francesca and Cesar might not have lasted, but today was the real deal. Naghdi and Ball gave us Tom O’Dell’s Real Love. They were emotionally joined and we would all be invited to their Diamond Wedding Anniversary. The supporting cast were not quite as memorable as the Hayward and Corrales team but this made the performance of the Principals even more stand out. Hats off to Matthew Balls dramatisation. His sneering, entitled Tybalt was replaced by a thoughtful feeling Romeo who seemed to realise quite early on that his love for Juliet was doomed. Exquisite partnering that made me gasp. Yasmine, well just perfect Garvy Avis was a darkly handsome swaggeringly violent Tybalt, more Reggie Kray than Michael Corleone. But today belonged to Matthew and Yasmine who dominated the performance. Their chemistry is combustible and you could feel the tension all around. (apart from the idiot in J8 who preferred to check his phone until given a sharp dig in the ribs by the lady in J9). A wonderful experience which has left me absolutely drained. Thank you RB. And, greedy pig that I am, I’ve got it all again on June 11.
  4. It is hard to see how a tweet reading: ‘You are much missed on stage. Looking forward to Firebird and hopefully other performances very soon’ could upset any dancer. I do not believe that dancers, particularly senior, very experienced ones are the delicate flowers some would have us believe. To have achieved status in such a demanding art form, one has to be more than just a talented performer. Indeed, most now spend a fair amount of their time promoting themselves, especially on social media. Dancers are performers who understand the value of a raised profile and an enthusiastic fan base which is a point I’ve made before In response to tiresome, baseless allegations of not respecting dancers.
  5. He may be exhausted! He has had a very taxing, although hopefully exhilarating, season.
  6. Oh, do behave! There is no speculation whatsoever about the nature of Edward Watson’s injuries/health or anything that might be considered personal. I am enquiring about the continued absence of a dancer I have followed for many years. Such concern is entirely legitimate about a performer on a public stage, the more so in a discussion forum devoted to dance. Everything I have said I would say direct to Mr. Watson were I lucky enough to encounter him.
  7. I agree, Happyturk. I don’t find the Nunez/Muntagirov, combination, lovely though it is, remotely equal. Nunez is always so confident, so supreme and Muntagirov so giving, that, inevitably, he is overshadowed and becomes simply a partner in the dance sense. I can’t remember who he was dancing with the last time I saw him but I remember remarking how much more he projected with someone other than Nunez. Think it would be good for his development to have other partners. Surely both Hirano and Ball are tall enough for Nunez?
  8. Alison: I have a horrible suspicion it might have been me. I was grasping at straws a while back and 'speculated' that perhaps as Wayne's muse he was a central character in the new full-length. A triumph of hope in the vacuum that is currently Ed Watson
  9. I have seen all her Manon performances and she is incredible. I saw her debut with Ed Watson when she was incredible. Then last year she had moved up several gears. She left you completely wrung out at the end. She absolutely IS Manon. Yes, I am also going for Bolle. Now thats one dancer I wouldn't mind seeing more of, along with Shklyarov.
  10. You are one brave Turk! Me, neither although I have hitherto held off saying so. Don't get me wrong, I can absolutely understand why others eulogise about him. His technique, his confidence, his amazing physique and, also, his sheer niceness, mean that I am always delighted to see him in the cast. I always feel that he is not only a wonderful dancer but an unselfish one in that his partnering is so secure yet never showy. However, all that said, he and I have never clicked emotionally.
  11. I just don't see why they cant be honest about things. I and many others have followed him for years and I think we deserve some communication. Also, you are right about the lack of comment on this forum. Criticise Hallberg for a less than stellar performance and the wrath of god descends on your head. Muntagirov has been granted sainthood and as for Marianela..... Yet Ed who has given so many years of fantastic development in his many roles, is almost ignored. Maybe people are 'in the know' or maybe he just wasn't that popular. Weird. I always think that Macrae doesn't get the plaudits he deserves either. He is a very different dancer to Watson and therefore not as high up my list, but he is still absolutely fantastic but has never attracted the adulation that Muntagirov gets.
  12. Thanks for that. I have tweeted him. Nothing. Tweeted ROH. Nothing. And nobody on here says anything. What is the elephant in the room and is this truly great dancer just going to fade away?
  13. I think it is all about balance. Osipova deserves to be indulged BUT based on the R & J reports, Hallberg did not bring anything special to that particular party. However, KOH was obviously struggling with injury problems and it was a great opportunity for us to see this much reported partnership. I am, however, v. surprised about next season when one has to presume that injury problems will not yet have kicked in. RB is overflowing with talent at the moment and I think the audience and also Osipova would be better served by being partnered by somebody from within the company. I must emphasise again that I did not see Hallberg's R&J but, this forum apart, I have friends who reported back that it was not a performance they would enthuse about. So, why is KOH asking him to guest so much? I take the point about Osipova never having been especially paired with anyone since Golding left but that was hardly a partnership that caught fire. I do not see why Muntagirov should be the preserve of Nunez. I loved her with Matthew Ball so could that not be repeated and her Mayerling with Watson was unbelievably good with two dancers who literally and metaphorically threw themselves into the roles. If he has returned, why could he not dance with her?
  14. Interested in your post, Anna C. Do they really restrict the accessible seats? And are there others that although not technically classified are in the more accessible range for you?
  15. Xandra, thank you again. I had lyrical all wrong assuming it was all about flowing lines and the ability to portray emotion. I shall be able to watch tomorrow with your definition in mind. I am taking a friend who has never seen Romeo and Juliet in any form although she is Italian. And then on Tuesday I'm doing my bit for International relations by bringing a French friend. Both partners relay on me to give them the gen on who is dancing so your information is wonderful.
  16. Well put, Ruth E. I have been a long-time fan of Cuthbertson and would agree she has certainly been put through the mill with her career. More power to her for battling adversity and giving us such wonderful performances. My favourite for her is Winter's Tale and her Alice is, well, she IS Alice. However, I agree that she and Bonelli don't always work so well. He is magical with Morera and I hate the thought that he will be leaving. He will be much missed.
  17. Sorry about that. Suppose I thought the terms were very much everyday parlance at the moment. I am sure I don't need to clarify discussion forum (?) but a referendum is 'submission of an issue of public importance to the direct vote of the electorate for an agreed decision.' I understand your support for Halberg and am only envious that I never saw him at his prime. But I don't think that should make the views of those of us who would prefer him not to become a regular guest with RB subject to dismissal.
  18. I have, and have had for nearly a year now, this feeling that Ed has gone. I know he is down for Firebird but then he vanishes, so that will make just two performances in two years. There has been no news (or I have missed it) and given how many fans he has I am a little fed up about this. As I've said before, I don't want injury details or to know about his personal life, but this continuing silence is odd. He is rarely mentioned on this forum which makes me think those in the know are just that. I would very much like to know if Firebird is to be his exit.
  19. Thank you Xandra. I adore Hayward and rush to see her in everything. I have always thought of her as being in the Cojocaru mold since I first saw her in Rhapsody. I love Naghdi but have not seen her nearly as many times although I have read so much glowing praise on this forum. Roll on tomorrow and thank-you again. PS: what is your definition of lyrical?
