new123
Hello, looking for suggestions of a DVD or youtube etc which my 10 yo could use to do stretching dance exercises safely. She currently makes up her own to pop songs. Thank you.
Anna C
Hello new123, This has been discussed before and I'll try to find some previous threads. In the meantime, I'd advise you to have a word with your daughter's teacher because stretches should really be (a) personal to each student and b. - very important - only ever done when the body is fully warmed up, e.g. after a warmup and a full barre session. Some students, mostly hypermobile ones, have difficulty feeling certain stretches due to low propriorception, so could easily over-stretch or stretch wrongly and pull a muscle. Hence asking the teacher for stretching exercises appropriate to your daughter's physique. Hope that helps.
trog
One of the best stretching resources is Brad Appleton's Stretching & Flexibility FAQ It's quoted in many books on stretching. A couple of excellent (IMO) DVDs are Sleek Technique and the Nicky McGinty ones.
Anna C
Here's an older thread: http://www.balletcoforum.com/index.php?/topic/12929-how-to-improve-flexibility/?hl=stretching#entry176799 Not sure if that one mentions Lisa Howell/The Ballet Blog but she is also worth a look. As your dd is only 10 though I would always check with teacher before embarking on a programme at home.
drdance
I currently really like following SHIFT movement science on Facebook. He shares some great advice on active flexibility. But I second the advice that others have already said above.
