Katymac
DD is mixed race (Jamaican/White) and she says she fancies some skin coloured ballet shoes; we have some old satin shoes that we thought we would try with as we can't afford Pointe shoes in case it goes very, very wrong. So I read up (watched) on Youtube, we bought some cheap(ish) foundation in the right colour and off I went Well tbh it hasn't gone well I can't get good coverage and it looks like I may need a second lot of foundation I'd definitely going to try buying the ribbons as I don't think they will dye easily Any helpful hints or tips? Harwel
How about tea dying? Never done it myself, but I know a previous dance school we were attached to, did that to get the girls shoes more tan colour.
Fiz
I have read that artificial fibres, such as rayon and acrylic never take dye well. Maybe that is why satin ballet shoes are so hard to dye with cold water dyes?
Katymac
I've mixed the foundation with some grapeseed oil and it is applying much more easily - it's a great colour match & she is planning when she can wear them - she doesn't think she will get to wear them often.
Balletmumfor2
Dd's teacher recently wanted tan coloured pointe shoes for a stylised ballet they were doing as they had bare legs rather than pink tights. They 'pancaked' their shoes as usual using calamine but added a small amount of foundation to make them more tan coloured.
Huddsballetmum
I've used tea to dye satin ballet shoes before and it works quite well. you just make the strength of the tea to how dark you want them, but it is trial and error so you may want to practice on some old ones before hand.
Gowiththeflo
Never tried it on ballet shoes, but the best thing to dye satin shoes ( ie bridal shoes) is FEV- ( French Enamel Varnish) available from theatrical suppliers. It stinks, but gives excellent coverage, comes in lots of colours ( and mixable) and doesn't get the shoes too wet, as it evaporates very quickly . Katymac
Thanks for the suggestions - DD is happy with the foundation - if I can work out how I'll post a picture after I've sewn the ribbons on
