  1. During May Week in my final year at college, we went to an outdoor screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show.  There was plenty of audience action, as one would expect, and we all had our water pistols at the ready for the storm scene when, low and behold, at precisely the right moment, it started to rain.  The shower lasted for exactly the same length of time as the song...

The Prince Charles cinema in London used to do a regular Saturday night film show of Rocky Horror, where the audience were openly encouraged to get dressed up as a character and interact.  That was the whole point of it.  I went to one once and it was great fun.  You accepted that you were probably going to get a few drops of water on you during the rain storm scenes as the audience squirted water bottles in the air.   The well prepared took raincoats or umbrellas to stick over their heads.  I think they occasionally do similar ones for the Sound of Music.

There is a big difference between a film and a live stage show, though.  For a start, the film stars can't hear you.  .

The cast of Rocky Horror in the stage show version also expect audience partici...

  3. Sorry but I'm going to keep on the tangent for a little longer, as I think it's a rather interesting topic.

It's not unsurprising that people do not think the Coliseum is the largest theatre (by seating capacity) in central London - this is usually attributed to the Palladium but it lies between the Coliseum and ROH in terms of the number of seats.  I say "central", as the Hammersmith Apollo has the most seats of any theatre in the UK (but IMO it's a bit of a monstrosity).

The Coliseum has the deepest stage amongst UK theatres but not the widest proscenium opening (or stage width) - that is the Barbican Theatre!  The Coliseum's proscenium opening is about 3 metres wider than the ROH.

Has anyone seen the RBS at Holland Park since the auditorium was reconfigured? If so do they use the new stage extension round the orchestra pit or only the main stage? I'm thinking about booking & my ticket choice would be different depending on whether or not the stage extension will be used.

    Only the main stage.

  5. Am pleased to see that ticket confirmation emails from ATG now include the following wording:

“We request that you show consideration to your fellow audience members by ensuring that the only entertainment comes from the professionals on stage. Anti-social behaviour towards staff or other customers will not be tolerated and will result in you being asked to leave the venue.“

Indeed. Seems a bit like false advertising though - should say general booking open for restricted view only!

For those online at 9 o'clock, there were quite a few non-restricted view tickets available, including some in the central section of the balcony.

I assume they will still be doing the Holland Park ones though

Yes they are (and public booking is already open).

I'd also much rather have the ROH system than the somewhat old-fashioned set-up at Munich and Stuttgart - there are probably others - whereby you get your request in by a certain date, specifying a band, and you are then allocated (if you are lucky) a ticket without having any say about the seats. Only after that process is online booking opened.

Strongly agree (and I remember the days of the ballot for friends booking at the ROH too - thankfully that's well in the past).

  8. I trying to fathom why the use of a queuing system for an online booking platform when it is very busy is a "low online performance".  There are plenty of other institutions (private and public) that use similar systems (and some of them are worse, by using random entry rather than progressing through the queue) and, golly gosh, I'm aware that young people use those too!

Strangely enough, I was on at 0900 on the dot this morning (having already logged in) and wasn't placed in a queue and booked the tickets I wanted with no hassle whatsoever.

Good thought. I believe they are negotiating the 10% cut in ACE funding as well as watching the (to this point) underperforming Cinderella revenue stream. The ROH may be working on Plan B (and C - Z)

Having done a quick check yesterday (whilst working out casts for all my Cinderella tickets...), I noticed that there are only a couple of performances that are now "underperforming"!
