  1. I've danced at the ROH partnered by Brandon Lawrence  🙂

(We were standing next to each other in the Balcony for Yasmine Naghdi's Odette Odile debut and, the gentleman that he is, Brandon answered my query on how was it decided when to release hands for Odile's held arabesque by demonstrating it. Don't think my arabesque was as good as Yasmine's.)

And no, this dance loving BBC pensioner didn't watch it either. I decided from the trailers that it wasn't for me, and wish it'd been called something else. "Dance for 50 Grand" perhaps?

  2. I discovered a book in the ROH shop. It is, sort of, the latest Royal Ballet Year Book.

It is now called "A Season in Pictures", and it is what used to be the main photo section of the Year Book, ie this one is the 2017/18 production photos.

The full title on the spine is "The Royal Ballet: A Season in Pictures 2017/18".

What it does not have is the intro for the 2018/19 season, with Company news and promotions and the 2018/19 Season at a glance giving this years' productions.

Not really casting, but the following productions have now been included in the "winter" season, with booking open on 21 September for Friends of all levels and 24 September for the general public.

    TRIO ConcertDance

    New Work New Music

    The Monstrous Child

Insight - New Work New Music

Insight - Primeiro Bailarino film screening

    Insight - The Monstrous Child

And there appear to be far more, and better, seats available in the public booking for these events than for the Friends booking last week. I can understand that (I think), in that they want to use this as introductory?

Also intrigued at the rows in the stalls. For the dance ones it's A-E and H K L M. I wondered if this was an indication of split seating with the stage in the middle. However it's this for the dance film as well, so doubt that! For the opera it's all rows A-K but no L or M. We shall see.

Edward Watson was great as the white rabbit, so not much of a plus I am afraid. But the choicer is yours. Better to have a choice than not you may say.

Yes, I already have the first DVD with Ed Watson as White Rabbit. I'll get this one as well, with James Hay who I thought was also great as White Rabbit. Each made it their own role in very different ways.

  5. For those off you who can get the London Live channel, it's worth keeping an eye on it for dance related programmes and films. This Monday 18th June at 1pm to 3.30 is "The Royal Ballet, a showcase....." Actually a showing of what is also available as a DVD, Fonteyn in Firebird, Swan Lake, and Ondine.

How everybody interacted with each other, with Rothbart, Benno and Siegfried and the Queen was wonderfully thought out, never boring. I think this is something which makes the Royal Ballet very special: the lack of impassive onlookers in the “background” – something that infuriates me every time I have to witness it. Even in the glorious ballroom scene, during the pdd, everybody is attentive, so you never perceive the pdd as an isolated event (AKA gala piece but with a few background supernumeraries), as I’ve experienced it too many times.

    Bravi for that.

I've sometimes been standing where, without stopping watching the Act 3 pas de deux I could also see Itzia Mendizabel as the Spanish Princess. If looks couild kill Odile wouldn't have survived to finish the act.

  7. I have no complaints about the young man standing next to me at the RB Swan Lake on Monday evening, even though he did give out a great whistle of approval for Yasmine Naghdi which made my hearing aid buzz, but only a little. He gave me a personal tuition on how to release hold when you feel that arabesque is secure. Thanks, Brandon  😊

From first hand experience and talking to other people, it seems that the line-ups for Benno and Prince Siegfried's Younger Sisters are:

    Campbell/Hayward/Takada

    Sambe/Kaneko/O'Sullivan

    Zuchetti/Hamilton/Mendizabal

    Dyer/Calvert/Stix-Brunell

    Acri/Gasparini/Magri

A long time ago, there was talk on here of Naghdi being cast as a sister so there might be a sixth trio yet to be revealed.

    James Hay?
