Oh my goodness @Crazylifecrazykids  what do you need to do in the video? Is that because they’re not holding normal prelims due to Covid?

I’m glad we’ve got another year before we worry about that! Good luck.

Yeah this is a new thing for the Mids auditions, which are also the prelims for W/L so the video is 20 mins barre, centre and stretch. I think it's a brilliant idea because come live audition time it may not go ahead, or if there are local lockdowns and my child can't attend as a result or any other child who maybe isolating, then they have these to hand but... its a pressure for me to get it right, take the video well and upload it ok.... it's that, that terrifies me 🤪😂😂

That’s helpful as the emails two of us seem to have received are confusing, but I suppose it’s how we’ve phrased the question.

Our photos are currently without socks so will leave them as they are.

our photos are also without socks also, its confusing haha but I took it literally. bare legs and ballet shoes.. so that's what we did! 🙃

Hello! Another parent of a yr 5 JA here, very grateful to the person who first mentioned that applications were open as the email reminder didn't come through until several days later - well caught @Crazylifecrazykids!

I am going to ask my daughter's ballet teacher to take the photographs, but I also noticed that there appeared to be no mention of sock wearing. It struck me as odd to have ballet shoes and nothing else on their feet, so I wondered if there was a mistake in the instructions.

Are your children wearing their JA uniform in the photos? I'm not sure whether this will help, hinder or make absolutely no difference 😀  I may be obsessing unduly about these photos though....

Good luck to everyone applying - I'm approaching the process with trepidation as it sounds quite complicated, but grateful to hear about experiences of others and realise that I'm not alone in finding it so.

DD wore just ballet shoes in her pics and bare legs but I'm sure socks would be fine. DD didn't wear her RB leo but a Leo she feels confident in and a colour she likes. We tried for summer last year but got an expected no... so many apply for such few spaces. DD wanted to try for spring this year and I guess as its one week they take less than summer, so chances are slimmer! Haha but she wants to try. Now the MA/ WL prelims have opened and that requires a vidoe as well as photos this time... my nerves are shredded lol, you are not alone x

    Are you sorted now @Crazylifecrazykids?

We did photos at the weekend and then when I was sorting the application realised we did the arabesque on an angle

rather than side view so going to have to do them again next sat.

I’ve just sent an email to check re socks for girls as it says no tights but doesn’t say anything about socks for girls but it does for boys. We did without socks but as we have to re do some I thought I may as well ask.

Does anyone know how many places there are for age 10-12 group? I read that there are 28 girls per year but not sure if it really means per year or per group (I.e 10-12). I was thinking about the possible number of beds as there are 12 y7 & 12y8,  (girls) beds potentially so would this cover perhaps 24 spaces for girls age 10-12, I.e years 5-7?

Yeah sort of got it sorted lol. We weren't happy with one of the photos, so re took and used the modify option to delete the one we didn't want and upload the new one but I don't know if it had already been seen.

No idea as to how many places... my child's chances are slim! Or even less than slim haha. Good luck with your application x

  5. This has been a really interesting read. I have a child on the verge of vocational auditions for September 2021 and it terrifies me. Yes we will support her along the way as well as trying to inject some realism. She's already noticed the banana feet thing and that hers aren't, she has very strong feet, long achilies and an instep but not really high arches. She dances beautifully with something I can't put my finger on and passion beyond her years but does she have "the ballet body" who knows and it just concerns me. We want to support her but most importantly we want to keep her mental health in check...we had no idea she would go in this direction and we aren't a dancing family, so it's all an eye opener to us.

Yes that’s pretty much it. From

memory, last year the email back offering audition was very quick.

    Best of luck 😊

Fab thankyou... took a while to do her pics 😆 and hope it didn't put too much info on the email... very new to this.

How dis your child get on? Xx

  7. Does anyone know how the screening works for Tring? Looking on the site, you send in an email answering specific questions along with some photos. Then from there you are invited to audition, or I guess you don't get an audition potentially?... Have I read that right? and if so how long is the wait to see if you are invited to audition? Thanks in advance 😊

    Update:

It’s a system error that they are fixing today and the closing date is 26th October.

They’re going to update the website with the closing date info.

so.... the saga continues! Haha I tried to sort my application but due to limited amount of staff in, its proving to be difficult, the advice from W/L was to do another application (diff email address) then try and get a refund on the first non photo application. So I've done that this morning... Summer not out for applications yet from what I can see. I had to chuckle to myself as her chances of getting a place are so low, especially as photos don't really show her at her best lol and all this stress for such a small chance.. things we do!? 🤣🤣

They won’t. It’s really not clear. From reading your post I went into select general applicant and can now answer the additional dancing questions but it still doesn’t give me any courses to select so I can’t get any further.

hmm..  a bit odd. What is your child's age? Maybe not old enough for spring but will be for summer? I don't summer applications are out.. even going through as a Royal ballet student, the only option I had was for spring. I was going to do both together x

I can’t find anything on the course selection part (not that I have DDs photos sorted yet!) but I thought I’d test it, so I can’t get any further.

Also when it says are they

    * general applicant

    * RBS Student

    * Direct entry

Do you think RBS student applies to associates?

I now think I may have been wrong to click the rbs student. I re ran the form and put general applicant and it went on to ask about if a JA etc, so hmm.. think that's why I've not been asked for photos... I'm going to ring them on Monday, they are going to think I'm so stupid 🥺

Well I put yes because last year the question asked and there was a drop down and it had JAs on there  x

I’d contact the RBS as there may be a fault with the website that they’re unaware of and also explain your problem

Thankyou, yeah I have emailed and had an automated reply that refers to their online Summer intensive 🙈 haha I'm really not lucky with this sort of thing! 🤣🤣

So I was just wondering if I'd been a dumb ass lol or anyone else and experienced the same, to put my mind at rest and it's not just me lol. I even went back in to update but still no indication to upload photos.

  13. Right.. here is my tale of woe 🤣 the intensive Course 2021 have opened. So armed with photos I went onto the Royal Ballet web site and started the application for Spring and Sunmer Intensive next year. As I went through the process it only offered me the spring intensive and didn't ask me to upload the photos! 🤔 I thought ok, maybe after the payment it will ask me to upload the photos.. so went ahead with that and nope just a summary screen with my application code.

What have I done wrong? 🤣🤣🤣 last year I went on filled out questions,  prompted me to upload the photos one at a time... easy. Not sure what I've done this time. I started the application again incase I had missed it but still couldn't see where to upload, even though it said to have them ready prior to starting the application. I'm very confused haha

My DD had 4.....probably the same 4! We ended up only applying at Elmhurst and RBS. Glad we did as I dont think work would have been too happy with twice as many days off!!!!

Yeah that is a consideration too but I think the JA one for Mids/ WL is a Saturday but I'm maybe (more than likely) wrong lol

  15. Thankyou everyone... DD so keen to try, so we will give it a go. It all feels a bit overwhelming, especially when I don't really know what I'm doing. It looks like DD has settled on 4 to try! Haha... so stressful 6 months coming up 😂 as well as local school applications

  16. Hi

Have found this forum really helpful as I'm a newbie dance parent.

So asking after your wealth of knowledge and experience once again.

Whilst my child ponders her yr7 direction and is looking to audition for various vocational schools, which the short list is now Elmhurst, RB, Hammond and Tring... lol got to love the enthusiasm! 😂 so whilst mentally going through my dance hit bank account I am wondering if we should even go to the expensive and logistics of the Elmhurst prelims as she was turned down for the Young dancers video audition? She was offered YD last year but we had to turn it down. DD is an RBS JA and her W/L prelims will be done at the MA audition.

My thinking is because she got in YD last year but not this year, that maybe this signals the end of the journey with Elmhurst?? I really can't fathom all this out 😂😂

Thoughts or previous experiences please as my head hurts thinking about it now haha

(DD is fully aware that it's all highly competative)

This is so true. When DD was doing year 7 auditions, we decided to try the all the main schools, including Hammond, which I didn’t consider seriously for a minute as it was miles away from us. We rocked up to the audition treating it as a practice run and we both really liked the feel of the place. Suddenly it was top of our list! Luckily she got a place and some funding.
I had no idea what I was doing either and still don’t as never had a dance lesson in my life. Good luck on your journey xx

Wow lovely story and congratulations to your DD

We would defiantly need funding, due to my home situation (caring role)  I don't work full time but hubby does and I work part time.

Thankyou we are excited to have a go xx

  18. 6 hours ago, meadowblythe said:

Agree with many comments above.  If you are clear to your DD that without funding this is just a "let's see how far we get" exercise,  other than a hefty blow to the wallet there is little to loose.  No one knows exactly what the magic combination is.  And even then it's partly luck as to who else auditions.

Would also just comment - the most prestigious may not be the best fit for your child.  Going on reputation alone is not a sure-fire recipe for success.  It's hard when you don't have a dance back ground - I didn't - but there is a lot more to going away to school than taking ballet classes, and the rest of it has to be right for your child too.

Yes thankyou and we have decided to make the audition run fun but we can only do schools that have funding sadly. Do you know which ones do fund? X

My dd was a RBS JA for 3 years.....got to finals for WL and Elmhurst. Got a no for WL and a yes for Elmhurst!

Just try and go to the open days if there are any. You will get a gut feeling which school is right for you......thankfully my dd got in to the one she wanted!!!

Thankyou... wow, congratulations to your DD... just feel out of my depth a little.. I guess she must have something about her to be offered 3 associate programmes but she doesn't have the really high arches and instead that some do, so not sure that's paticulary good.. it's a mystery! 😂 x

  20. Thankyou.. we just don't have a clue, she's enjoying JAs and pleased she's moved up in BBA, it all seems such a difficult journey and yes the list of what people say they look for is a little off putting haha but if we don't let her try she will never know either... it's my nerves! Auditons and result waiting take their toll 😂

It was definitely an experience for all no matter the outcome 😂 especially us parents/carers! Trying to do a zoom audition in a caravan awning in the wilds of Devon on a mobile phone with no ballet leotard or shoes was an experience not to be repeated! 🤤

Wow you were really up against it, all credit to her and you for doing it! amazing 😊 x

That’s very kind. Thank you! And best of luck to you DD for her academic year in ballet 😊 🩰 Though he had his fair share of problems also, and enough went ‘wrong’ for him to feel it didn’t go well. He started nearly everything on the wrong foot. His brain seemed to see left but hear right, and confused him the whole time. It felt more like The Krypton Factor at times.

Well absolute credit it to him he got through it and got in, fun year ahead!

Thankyou,  she's looking forward to it, more so RBS JAs year 6 do pirrouettes haha.. I love her view of the world! She was moved up in Ballet Boost to lower mids and her main excitement was needing to get a new uniform leotard as it's a different colour!! She's nuts but wouldn't have it any other way 😊

I thought along similar lines. It’s great that Elmhurst did actually run auditions, but there are so many factors that made this different to a ‘normal’ audition. Same with the way RBS are running their JA auditions via video.... In a normal audition, they all disappear off into the same room, and are exposed to exactly the same conditions, and its all very equal and fair (except maybe when they separate the older children and the younger ones within the same year group). But this year, there are a million different factors every child will be exposed to. My DS has to dance on carpet for the first time, we had to close all the windows so he could hear properly, but it was ridiculously hot in the house. There were space issues, and so many distractions out of his control. Not to mention poor internet speed and broken sound. Every child who auditioned should feel incredibly proud for doing so under very unique and challenging conditions.

Couldn't agree more.. we spent the whole week testing, buying LAN cables, sorting a suitable place etc etc but when it came to audition day it was so hot and my DD seemed to forget she was on Zoom at times! She kept taking out loud 🙄 looking at me, got on the wrong foot so many times... I just don't think after so much prep her head was quite where it should be, so she has learnt a few valuable lessons 🤣🤣 one being to remain focussed and remember she's in an audition for even though she's at home! 🤣 strange times we live in but all forms the great tapestry of life! Congratulations to you DS hope he enjoys every minute 😊

Oh sorry to hear that, but you have a right positive attitude. It is really hard to do audition in limited space and being at mercy your internet upload speed. There might be as well factor of social distancing, so maybe not so many places available. EYB is great. My DD is  doing it past 2 weeks as Tchaikovsky Gala - in fact the first live classes 😊 and she really enjoys every moment of that. Hoping for real show next year. Good luck with all dancing adventures and for vocational auditions. 🤞

Ahh thankyou so much... we found it all a bit stressful but it was a great experience for my DD regardless of outcome and she has learnt from this too and if she ever has to do a zoom audition again (hopefuly never) she would at least have some experience because our ballet journey has been pretty crazy we've learnt early on there are so many highs and lows.. we tend to get over the lows fairly quickly and she is becoming very resliant as a result. Good luck to your childs dancing journey and enjoy every minute xx
