Don't over think it and carry on with your applications.  They didn't see your DC dance - it is all photos and they probably closed their eyes and pointed!  My DC got a place and has been lucky enough to go to a few over the years  but it has absolutely no baring whatsoever on whether they will get a WL or MA place.  The year my DC was applying for the school there were a few who didn't get spring or summer but went on to get a place at WL.  Honestly year 6 is the most stressful year for both parents and children - it should have a health warning!

Thankyou for your kind words. I dont think DD looks great in photos and certainly doesn't catch her artistry,we are trying to be really grounded about the Yr7 applications, they have nearly all gone digital, so I'm a bit concerned her photos will be a problem this year as more is put on them... We are doing the MA/WL video audition at home, so its not going to be Oscar winning! We were just hoping for a wait List for Spring Intensive this time around but sadly no, I think a wait list would help spur us on for the videos and photos! Haha.

    Congratulations to your DC xx

Think we can see those five SWL & raise you! I estimate over JA’s/MA’s/SA’s/ADA’s/Spring & Summer WL intensives & CG Summer intensive.... there has probably been around 4 No’s, 7 Wait Lists (called various things....never understood if all lists are equal? Been called over the years Short Wait List/Select Wait List/Directors Wait List....who knows??? So much to speculate....think perhaps that’s their little game???!!!) and 2 Yes’s!!

Worth it all? Always view it as a bit of a lottery & auditions as a chance to dance in hallowed Royal studios so worth it for that alone!

Over the so many years, the too many photo taking tantrums (that’s from me as much as the DD!!), the how many times before applications upload correctly nightmares & of course the I dread to think how many hundreds of pounds spent (???😱😱) spent - so much just for those photos to be looked at & decided from....plus the costs where actual auditions were attended.....

Think many of us in here dare not cost out time/funds spent supporting our young dancers.....but expect most of us don’t regret it & would do it all again (many of you do of course witg more than one dancer in family or with supporting other talents!!!

    Goid luck all!

Well said! We are currently looking at DDs video for MA/WL, which means moving the house around... checking flooring and lighting, etc, etc, etc and yet we know how minute the chances are BUT with such a passionate, committed and hard working DD how could we not let her try? 🥰

  3. I've always wondered how they choose too. DD got a straight no for Summer last year and was too young for spring...DD is a JA, so I don't think it plays an advantage or disadvantage...but I don't know 🤣

I guess they can't take many...we aren't expecting a yes but to be within even a chance we have to apply, so thats how we see it, got to be in it to win it so to speak.

I think it's harder for us, all this waiting and wondering than it is for our DCs. When I applied I didn't tell DD when results were due out lol

    Good luck everyone xx

I’ve just seen that the Hong Kong spring intensive has been postponed until 2022.

Had people been notified about places for the HK one?

I’m just wondering if they had and if that means they’ll get the spring places instead so there’s an even smaller chance?

As the date for notification gets nearer I’m going through every possible scenario to see whether DD has any chance at all! My gut feeling is that it will be a no but I can’t help but think ‘what if!’

I hadn't seen about the Hong Kong, so I don't know if it will affect the London spring one, London closing date was extended.

I'm trying to forget about it 🤣🤣 because its more than likely a no, luckily the MA/WL and Tring videos are keeping me busy...im too old for all this, technology stuff! 😂😂 x

Anybody know where to start with the video?? I very much doubt we will get back into the studio in order to film.
    Sometimes I wish I was a ballet teacher! 🤣

Haha no.... we are hoping to get back to dance studio but if not I will just work our way through the list... like RBS.... and hope we get it right. Hopefully they will know we may have to film at home x

Crazylifecrazykids - my dd aplied for yr7 but was poorly and not successful, so applied for yr 8 and did get a place. If you are worried about the cost of an audition then you really have to think if you can afford vocational school. The funded places are means tested ( look on Elmhurst website to work out roughly how much you will pay per year), in addition there are house funds, trips, pocket money, school uniform (and the uniform bursary doesnt go far once they are getting through Pointe shoes and demi-pointe shoes quickly). They also have leave out every 3 weeks, so once per half term, so will either need collecting Friday 2.45 and returning Sunday, or catch trains - all this is additional cost. So without putting a grim outlook on it all, it is an amazing experience for the dc, but it isnt cheap. Make sure you go in with your eyes wide open. It isnt fair to dc to go through the audition process if you cant afford to follow it through.

Normally all who apply get prelims, however, i am sure due to covid they have to be more selective. There are places in year 8,9 and 10 but only when children leave, and they leave because they want to go to another school, dont enjoy the reality of living away, or fall out of love with ballet.

So my dd is now applying for 6th form,  so we are not just looking at UK, but also Europe, again there is a cost, but some European schools are cheaper than UK. Just a reminder to all that the rollercoaster you are on doesnt stop once they get a place at vocational school, it gets even more stressful with assessments, injures etc.

On a positive note, my dd absolutely loves it and we wouldnt change it. For her Elmhurst is where she wants to stay, but one school doesnt fit all, just like all schools.

It is definitely - if at first you dont succeed try, try again, it may be a no for now but they grow and change so quickly that every year is different.

Good luck to all those applying. I hope this post has been helpful.

    Xx

Thankyou all very helpful. Its not the cost of the audition or the school as such, we have done the calculator on MDS and what we'd have to pay to top up.. seems OK on paper but there are other costs as well I'm sure x

Nothing here - do you think that they will let you know if it is no or not at all (experienced only once after westend audition final). I have sent it on 22nd. Can I check what email address you send it on for dance course? Thank you.

Maybe ring them? They are really approachable, have you checked your junk email? x

They have changed it for this year and are screening from photographs first. You will be told after the closing date on 11th Dec if you’ve been invited to audition....... seems a bit unreasonable to charge £40 though when all they might do is look at 4 photos.....

Yeah that's how I read it... long waitt to see if children get to preliminary stage 🙈.. x

I’ve just submitted the application form for my ds. Do they not invite everyone who applies to prelims?

It says on website that we will hear if offered a preliminary audition.. im confused lol

I was also wondering the same thing especially as the photos required for boys seem very basic for year 7. Was also wondering about the call back? Is that just a physio assessment?

From the way it reads, you send off the application plus the 4 photos and pay £40, then we wait to see if DC is invited to the preliminary audition stage. Just wonder how long it takes to find out DC can audition or not and have they done the in previous years 🤔

  11. I see it says we will be contacted if successful in getting a preliminary audition. Is this just this year? Or is this is said every year? If so is the decision fairly quick as to whether the child has gained a place at Preliminary auditions? Or do we just enter pay the money and wait until after closing date to find out?

Its all a bit confusing. Tring do a screening process before you pay. Hammond you enter and pay, then ger an email inviting to audition. ŔBS audition all applicants. Then Elmhurst put that on their website, so a bit confused... as usual! I was wondering if selecting for preliminary audition was a new thing or has it always been like that... application seems quite long too 🤔

Do you think having turned down the place the previous year could affect future chances? My DS had provisionally accepted YD for year 5 and had started going to the introductory sessions in June of year 4 but then got offered JAs in London (much closer to us) and so we had to turn it down. I had sent a very apologetic email but they never responded. Hopefully, this wont affect future chances as DS truly loved it there.

I hope not that's the case, we had to turn down Yr5 sadly, wanted to audition for Yr6, it was a zoom audition and really didn't go well, we had an expected no but DD learnt from it.

Wow, amazing and interesting. Congratulations on passing screening. I have sent my DD info, but not holding much hope that she will pass screening as only their CBA and BBA past  few years and not much experience otherwise (no festivals and competitions).

I'm sure she will be fine 🙂 its all about potential at this age, hopefully you will hear back soon. We heard very quickly then it was a couple of weeks for audition info to be sent. Good luck xx

    What is the video?

This is for yr7 entry. After passing the screening I received all the audition info, which is video submission, really clear and concise it's just my technical skills I worry about! 😅

  15. I feel the same brain has had it. It's travelling a long way to class I'm confused about too. So for example going from a tier 1 place to a tier 2 or tier 3 place then back again...non essential travel rule etc. Luckily not applied to our circumstances as of yet but it so easily could at some point. Or if you class is in a tier 3 area and you live in a tier 1. I'm very confused! Want to be responsible at the same time as rational! 😜🤣

  16. Have to admit I find all this very confusing and somewhat stressful lol. DD embarking on auditions for 2021 entry and it would appear to be a minefield. She would love to go to W/L in her youthful exuberance it's all shiney but i have no idea what they look for... I read some posts saying there all different physiques etc yet other posts saying the young people are all similar in physique. I'm sure some unsuccessful at JAs get in, maybe? Then there's the if they are turned down for intensives there, is that a yard stick to them being unsuitable for RBS? Or is that a whole different thing? We are undecided about DD trying, it would be nice to know what they look for but I believe this is the million dollar question! 😂

Hello. We havent applied yet...but just wondered how you knew about the video and whether it is like the JA one where you're sent the video link separately before audition? X

The video requirements for MA and full time are on the website... it's not the same as JAs if you see what i mean? There is a date for the MA/ prelim audition and the video is a back up should they not take place. Its been a different process for JAs this year (from what I read on here) due to lockdown.. hope that makes sense lol... i think it's great we are having videos as a back up plan, it's just my technology skills that are in question! 😆 x

Ooh, thank you to everybody for the sock info! Maybe the answer is to do one foot on, one foot off! 🤣

Or more likely, it's reassuring that it sounds that actually it doesn't really matter one way or the other and I should just take a deep breath and relax about it!

@Crazylifecrazykids best of luck to you and your daughter for the video submission. It's difficult for everyone - parents who have to learn how to do the technical side of things as well as the poor children trying to show what they can do in such an artificial context. At least everyone applying will be in the same position. Fingers crossed!

Thanks, yep I definitely find all this technology difficult 🤪 I quite like the idea of take her, drop her and pick her up process! 😂 but it's brilliant they are thinking about a back up too x
