Great British Rail sale 2024

Thought I'd start a new thread for this so it doesn't get lost in the one about strikes. it's not supposed to start until midnight tonight and indeed Avanti (sadly my rail link to London) weren't advertising it but DonQfan told me she'd already booked so I checked and Trainline seem to have started so I used their link. I don't use them much as they have a booking charge but it only seemed to be about £1 and worth it to get £23 off my next London trip to see Frankie/Marci/Alex's matinee on the 17th Feb. The only snag is that on Trainline at least you have to book specific trains so no flexibility as it doesn't seem to apply to off-peak returns for example.

Hope others are successful too. It's about time we had some good train news! Though what the rail system really needs is re-nationalising but don't get me started on that!!

I'm just looking now, and - as usual - CrossCountry have very few discounts. Why are they such an expensive operating company (and why do their trains always seem overcrowded, dirty & contain more than the usual quota of rude passengers?)

I really dislike the monopoly they have - bring back British Rail, I say (well, at least from the West Country to the Midlands ...)

According to the National Rail site (https://greatbritishrailsale.nationalrail.co.uk/#/great-british-rail-sale) the sale has now officially started (until 29th Jan, for travel between 30th Jan and 15th March), though not all rail operators are participating. As always, moneysavingexpert.com has some excellent info and tips to make the most of this sale at https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/deals/cheap-coach-train-ticket-deals/  (It will also surely be featured in the MSE weekly email, which usually goes out on Tuesday night).
