This isn't meant to be a review of last night's performance as it was the general rehearsal to which, being a Barry Kosky production, I went along with low expectations but, wowzer, what a surprise! I didn't hate it. I didn't have to close my eyes to shut out the staging. It was powerful, purposeful and provocative, with some truly stand-out moments. Pappano and the orchestra were on fire, the cast impressed - some more than others - and the audience went wild at the end of what, for me, was overall an unexpected triumph.
