A good point as yes, it has opened an interesting dialogue & certainly made me realise that too often syllabus training to exam entry takes over - particularly where a student has perhaps just 1 x45min weekly lesson. But I do also appreciate that parents/fee payers want to see progress & often they see this best measured by progression through grades & having a certificate. And of course performance opportunities are getting harder for dance schools to facilitate - even before Covid - with the expense & time commitments etc. It is a sign of the times too that online is the new platform for assessment & even perhaps performance.
