  1.  My dd left a private school at 16 on the condition she went somewhere where she could do her A levels (Scotland HND) and BA Hons.

She choose Ballet West as you also get 3 years stage full tour experience too.

She has got her HND, ARAD and BA Hons this year. She is now doing another year just training with all academics finalised.

If she doesnt get a job in the dance world at least she has her ARAD to teach and BA Hons to either carry on at Royal Academy of Dance to further her qualification on go into something new.

Its a cruel world out there and not everyone makes it. Have a back up plan.

  2. I have some Bloch boys tap shoes 7.5 american size. I think that is 4 uk? Worn for 2 terms only, needs 2 screws though and laces as my ds put elastic in them so he could slip them on and off quickly.

I also have a pair of size 11/12 no size in them. They are virtually new.

If your in London you can pop round and try them before buying new ones or drop of at Elmhurst when I drop son off.

I live in between St Pauls (2 stops from Holborn) and the Barbican 2 stops from Kings Cross.

  3. Hello all,

I am looking for a little help and advice. My 11 year old  has been offered places at Hammond on the dancing course and Italia Conti and we now have a tough decision to make. She has had a number of amateur dramatic parts, performed in singing competitions and of course enjoys her dancing. At this age she is yet to decide if she wants to follow a performing or dancing direction.

So I have a question to anyone who has experience of either of the two schools.

Hammond - the course focuses on dance, does anyone know if there are any options to have additional lessons or weekend acting/drama clubs and the same for singing to compliment her dancing course.

Italia Conti - they do not directly offer boarding facilities and this will be a prerequisite to accepting a place. This may be a question for parents of those at the school who may know of contacts but does anyone know of any boarding options, the only one the school are aware of is full and we are on a waiting list. Ideally we would like one that drops off each day or if not, that are within a short distance of the school and have others of a similar age that go to Italia Conti. As you can imagine, having an 11 year old travelling on the underground on her own is our biggest concern.

    Please help.

We live just around the corner from Italia Conti and the area is safe.

My ds travelled the underground from Barbican to Shepherds Bush for a year and he was 11.

Loads of children get off at the Barbican for school.

  4. Can I just say that one school that may be at the top one year doesn't mean it is at the top another.

That goes for a school that was lower down in the ranks could be nearer the top.

You really need to-do your homework on who the teachers are at that given year.

    Who has left the school.

    Who has joined the school.

    Pastoral care.

    Academics is really important.

And more importantly where your child will be happy and flourish.

When your child goes for audition 9/10 they will feel which is the right place for them.

My dd did not want to go to Ballet West. It was her only option due to a car crash which destroyed her auditions. But we convinced her to go for a very late audition and make a holiday out of it. She went in knowing in her mind that she would not like it.....came out saying 'this is the place!' She is now in her 2nd year. Central would have been better as its only 1/2 mile away from us! But she is staying put!

Don't look at the name of a school, look at the school itself. :)

  5. My daughter was accepted at Ellison last year - she was 15 at the time . The tuition fees were $11700, accommodation in dorms which were within walking distance of the school (but didn't include food - student responsible for feeding and looking after themselves although there is a chaperone on site) were around $1800 for a single room and $1250 for shared per month - fees at professional childrens school were $36000 if I remember rightly - we decided that unless we won the lottery it was a no go and she is happy to have a place at ENBS this year with a DADA :) If you are looking at sending your DS Spax Mr Ellison does have ltd scholarships and is known to favour boys ;) he is a great teacher.

thanks I will keep that in mind.

I have had to pull him out of WL as it wasn't for him but he is in his third week at Elmhurst at the moment and so far so good!

  6. I think the standard is higher over there by all accounts.

I was talking to a CSB students dad at their show case at the ROH and he said she auditioned at two places over there and had no chance.

I was also talking to a lad who went to America with Matthew Bourne Company and he said they outshone them.

Its really worrying when your own dc want to be artists. My dd had her heart set on going to US.

Might look at sending my ds over there."/

  7. Hi Spax - I think you'll find that Elmhurst do assess out. It is not rare at all.

    Really?

How many was assessed out this year 11 - 16 years olds?

I really need to stop taking what people say as the truth:(

  8. I sympathise with the instinct to name and shame, especially when a school or teacher is very critical of a student's physique. However, I would issue a gentle reminder that in accordance with the AUP, "highly critical comments" must be made under a member's real name, not a pseudonym. This could inadvertently "out" and identify a student, which may not be wise in the long term.

As a parent I would possibly complain to the school in that situation but that is not the same as "naming and shaming" under your own name on a very public forum.

I hope you don't think I am naming and shaming Elmhurst. They rarely assess out.

    Highly recommended school for this.

  9. I have heard from a Birdy that Elmhurst are talking about stopping the 'assessing out' for the first 5 years.

The children are so nervous after Christmas knowing that they are due.

I have watched children along with my ds stressing over this. It is awful to say the least!!
