  1. Where is the best place to buy a nice tutu? It's not for a competition, just to have some photographs taken. Would ideally like to go and try on as I can see you can buy lots online but I'm not sure of size. Thanks.

Edited to add : we're in South Derbyshire.

  2. A couple of thousand applicants - 5 photos per applicant - I doubt that they spend long pondering each photo! Just imagine the thousands of man hours that are collectively spent taking all of those photos, the number of developpe shots binned and re-taken, the worrying we do over tiny details …………. and they probably average no more than a second per photo looking at most of them

The only good thing to come out of my DD's photos was a good hoover behind the settee!!

  3. I'm wanting to find out more information about the MDS award.  Is it a case that if your DD is good enough/gets a place and you fall into the category to be eligible for a MDS award - you get it?  I can't believe that it's that easy.  I'm sorry if this has been discussed before - I have done a quick search which now means that I know the difference between MDS and DADA so thanks for that.  I'm looking at Elmhurst and Hammond potentially in three years time.

    Thanks

  4. Lack of sleep is definitely my trigger. I had my first migraine in my 30s and I literally thought I was dying. ..my head felt like it was splitting into two and I just couldn't get out of bed...it must have been so scary for your DD. Lovely to hear you were well looked after. Hope she's feeling better.

  5. Hi hoglett.

From what I remember last year they are split into four groups, normally age relevant. Level 1 age 7-9, level 2 age 10-11, level 3 age 12-14, level 4 age 15+. Although there also can be movement between the groups depending on ability too.

Hope that helps. The lady in the office is really helpful for any questions you have xx

Thanks...do they audition again then in the final?

  6. Absolutely you can. Have a look at https://www.gov.uk/student-finance. The conservatoire linked schools can access £9,000 pa tuition fee loan. Ballet West is a private university so its the £6,000 pa figure. Don't forget these are loans, but the student doesn't have to repay until salary reaches a threshold - so not a major worry for your average dancer! I've quoted figures for England, other parts of UK are slightly different. If you apply for a non degree course and then don't succeed in securing funding other options include treating it as per any other independent school 6th form offer. It helps to do some advance planning here and be completely realistic about what you are prepared to do to raise the finance. There are options other than passing round a hat, but it is a highly personal decision and needs expert advice. The costs for 3 years sound pretty horrendous especially for a boarding place, but I honestly think that you have to plan for this eventuality, as the worst possible outcome must be to have to take a child away from a school because the money has run out.

    Thank you, that really helps.

  7. Which would likely be the case for most people - 90K is a lot of money over 3 years plus all the other expenses that arise. Maybe focus on courses that are classed as degrees then your dd can access the same funding arrangements as your older children at university.

Can I just clarify a point...so dance degree courses ...you can apply for the same loans as standard degrees?

  8. This is on their official site:  The deadline for online applications is 5pm (GMT) on Friday 20 January 2017. Results will be communicated via email, approximately four weeks after this.

This was on their FB site:  This year we received a record of 2694 applications for 632 spaces on our Summer Programme.

We hope to extend offers from 1 March.

  9. Hi ,in my opinion and experience, they are looking for happy children who engage eye contact with the 'judges',look as if they are enjoying their dancing and also have the ability to pick up the steps quickly.

Good luck. Do let us know!

  10. I've send my DD's OPES application form and cheque a week ago. Will I receive any information that they have received it and her place is secured? Will there be any communication regarding the times of arrival and departure, what to bring, timetable etc ?

I received an email to say they had received her form and that she had a place. They said they'd send more details nearer the time.
