See? This is the sort of thing you'd never think of (well, I wouldn't)! We'd already started talking about doing two trips in the summer!

Further to this, do people generally book the ‘full year’ 51 weeks or the academic year options? I can see they are priced differently on Dwell but US don’t seem to be offering that at this point for NewMedlock.

    Hi,

My daughter is in dwell. Originally was booked for Medlock en-suite room but due to late offer of a place we had to cancel & then with 12 days ....yes 12 days! we had to quickly find somewhere for her to live we tried Medlock with no luck so tried dwell MSV we managed to get her into a 4 bedroomed flat with no ensuite but we just needed accomodation.  Her flat has a shared toilet, shower room which are large & a shared kitchen ( small ) & no living/ dining room. As luck would have it it's worked out perfect for her only 2 of them sharing. There was excitement for Parkway re opening all being new etc but she has decided for next year she is staying in dwell & we have booked for an en-suite again 4 bedroomed flat, shared kitchen plus dining/ living space.,which I think is better when there will be 4 of them sharing.

I do know there are a few students who do live in various accomodations dotted around the area. Re offers & funding time scales I will say ........my dd was offered a place very soon after her audition .....funding was a different story don't give up hope waiting for funding....we were working on plan 'B' & almost was on its path but as I said with 12days to the start of NBS term my dd had the best news & one term in she's loving NBS & all it has to offer, also loves being in the heart of Manchester.

Oh wow that’s fantastic for your DD at the eleventh hour, how stressful it must have been! Thank you for sharing this I am trying to not think about the waiting for funding, I do really like to be organised so I imagine it’s going to get a bit nerve wracking as time goes on! I have resolved it’s better to have as much information as I can gather now so we can act swiftly if/when the time comes!! 🙂

I suppose that depends on the length of your journey really? For us (near Liverpool) it’s a definite no brainier of travelling down the afternoon before & staying over- and we’ve the added benefit of being able to have a wander round the surroundings trying to find somewhere to eat etc, so we can see what the area’s like……

not sure if I dare add up the cost so far of travel & accommodation etc…… 🙈

I agree we only didn’t hotel it for our ‘local’ one, we made sure we got to the hotels reasonably early and DD was very focused and was asleep for around 9pm which is unheard of usually. I found going down the night before- even though I’d sussed them out on google maps- really did take the stress off as the driver. Most journeys were 3-4 hours so wouldn’t have loved the 4am set off and the risk of traffic issues I think it just put DDs mind at ease (as much as it could) knowing she could take it steady in the morning preparing 🙂

  4. Holiday Inn Express is super close, we have stayed there before, it was as you’d probably expect standard sort of hotel, they have a lot of issues with their lifts and there are only two. There are about 9 floors so better if you’re quite agile and breakfast is usually included.

There is Ibis on princess street I think, it’s a stones throw away.

Further up Oxford Road there is a premier Inn although we haven’t used this one.

kimpton clocktower is a bit swish if your budget is extensive it’s not far either.

There are a few a car parks nearby, if you look on parkopedia, they range quite a bit in price so worth planning a back up car park just in case.

    Thank you Gowiththeflo.
Preparing the solo plus 2 monologues and 2 songs doesn’t sound like the easiest audition? I think Urdang is 1 song, 1 monologue and no solo? I’m surprised there was no ballet class, I thought that Bird is the most dance focused MT college, or together with Urdang. I know there will be ballet class in Urdang. I feel like expert when it comes to ballet school auditions, both for lower and upper school, but MT is a mystery to me.

When DD went to Bird audition they did a brief ballet warm up and said they teach ballet for musical theatre rather than classical ballet. DD wasn’t asked to perform the additional song or monologue but it did take away time from polishing the first choices.

The talk at the start was very thorough and the staff seemed really approachable.

DD said it was a fun day and she really loved the Modern class.🙂

  6. Can I ask if anyone knows, if there is still a lean towards newmedlock for first years accommodation? Past posts I’ve seen seem to show a trend for newmedlock and I also spotted last year they seem to book up pretty quickly and with the opening/reopening of the additional accommodations in the area I wondered if there had been any shift as I’d ideally like DD to be with others from NBS.

    Thank you🙂

🙈Yes- DD’s first 3 were over 8 days…… & throw in overnight stays the night before too.  I defo think charts helped, with train /hotel details etc too…… helped husband work out what was going on too!! 🤣

    hairpinseverywhere where’s her favourite? What’s her background/strengths??

My Dd is definitely a dancer first,(ballet/contemporary/jazz/tap/theatrecraft, rather than street/hip hop/commercial etc) singer/actor second. I feel Bird/Laine ( obvs funding issues🙈) might suit her style more than Urdang, but that’s what we really want to find out…….

Hello Gowiththeflo, 3 in 8 days well done to you and your DD!

Dd is a dancer firstly, she sounds similar to your DD, my DD loves ballet but she’s not a ballerina. DD would ideally like to go to either Performers or NBS.

Yes our spreadsheet helped no end, had the hotels and all the post codes for the sat nav and train info etc on,  along with what length dance / song monologue for each place and the format it was needed in etc we’d have been lost without it I’m sure.

Urdang does seem like a great choice. DD is 15 presently so only applied for Diplomas. Bird and Laine are also excellent options well done to your DD! I guess it doesn’t hurt to do the recall and see how she gets on from there? Hopefully some experienced readers will be able to offer some knowledge 😊

@Silversparkle& @Hairpinseverywhere  good luck to both your Dd’s. Offer letters were received a week after the audition. Still love that NBS send out letters rather than an email.
My DD loved her time at NBS. Now living the dream ☺️

Hi @balletbean & @DancingShoesDD received the good news today just wanted to update for future applicants looking, received via email on this occasion 🙂

    Hi all,

can’t find any thread related to 6th form auditions so thought I post a quick question instead of just reading

DD did her Northern Ballet school audition today but forgot to ask how long until results are out.

Before I contact them, does anyone know what to expect? Also as they did interviews and solos, I’m guessing they don’t do finals but she didn’t ask and they didn’t say.

     Thanks in advance

Good Luck to your DD, my DD auditioned yesterday too ☺️

  10. Hi

My daughter missed her grade 2 ballet (RAD) exam due to moving dance school. She has been put into grade 3 and is due to take her grade 3 in March 16.

I'm after opinions as to whether I should ask for her to do the grade two as well so she doesn't have a gap.

    Thanks
