  1. Absolutely SandP, I agree with all yr comments about parenting and guidance. I think by majority we all get it right, I am very much learning along the way. But regarding the classical focus, out of an associate environment I think the right minded student/understanding parent is in the minority, or, it takes them a lot longer to understand what it takes and the passion they need. Maybe I was unusual but by 12 there wasn't a ballet book I could get my hands on that I hadn't read or used to help me. Now if I ask an advanced class any history of ballet or music and composer questions, they can't answer. But they know about Dance Moms, tho forgot to do their mets exs at the same time.

  2. As for competitions I am all for them but my goodness you need to be seriously loaded to enter YAGP or Prix. I think UK students have drive but they have so much exposure to alternative interests, there are few who really understand how focused on 'ballet' and all that enhances it they need to be to follow a Classicsl career.

  3. Oh dear. I must buy and read. How sad to hear this. I wonder who he is aiming it at. From what I have seen in the last few years, british students (non vocational) and with an outgoing sense of performance are sidelined for the foreigners. Lauretta Summerscales for one! I have seen a class of WL students told to dance as a corps not try and be soloists. And a rather lovely now RB company member told the same in her last ur there. I def think my ex students at WL have serious lack of confidence and the fight is bashed out. Or they are told only one way to show they are fighting which, if it doesn't suit them they lose faith or think why bother. For the non vocational student its deflating to know they might get overlooked. So as a teacher, out of 100s of students we might get one who could really give the foreigners a run for their money with standard, physique and facility so yes I do think they as such a minority, have an entitlement- as a british student to train at the best british school and no I don't think WL students have an entitlement over non voc.

  4. I had a situation where one of my cousins friends was talking about a 'hot little number' he'd seen/had a picture of. And that she was a professional dancer. They were passing the social media photo around and I was nearly sick to see it was one of my 14 yr old students. I didn't say anything at the time but had to bring it to her mothers attention. And the girls. I'm at a loss to understand why parents and their children think it is ok to post these pictures. I've just seen another dodgy one crop up tonight-shes 10,I never know do I say anything/ignore?! Tricky!

  5. And I hope it's the Royal!!

What are your thoughts on her settling in to the corps though? I don't think it will be enough for her. I think she is totally gorgeous to watch and very accomplished but her feet are not completely Royal Ballet (though nor are others in the company) and I also feel she could do with a year in the system at the school to truly hone the royal ballet style, she needs to be Ashtonised in my opinion! And just lacks something I can't put my finger on that the students going into the company have. I'm not disputing her abilities - just interested. Apologies going off subject here!

  6. I think amongst us teachers it is confidence boosting that we do a good enough job outside of vocational schools that our students can feel at ease amongst full time ones and be regarded as equals. so No negativity meant from me at all. Just nice to see a fair competition where everyone is allowed to give a good account of themselves and that it wasn't an exclusively vocational student final as some comps tend to be. It seems that all the students had a fantastic time and by all accounts it was a lovely day. So good to hear positivity!!

  7. There are some threads on here about split sole shoes. I am sure doneone will put you in the direction of them. There is a lot of research but I have found that the foot is not allowed to strengthen and develop fully and they tend to encourage 'scrunching' of the foot which can create potential injury. I have also found that metatarsals can get lazy in them in young dancers. I think they are great for a rest from pointe shoes for teens upwards and also once a student has learnt and studied and put correct use and alignment of foot in practice. Plus they tend to have done most of the growing by then. They are nice to feel the floor then. But until then the full sole gives the young foot something to work against and more support. ????

  8. Oh and they have them with a single elastic. At the end of the day it is what she is happiest in. I don't allow split soles until they are well into their teens for many reasons but that is just me.

  9. Def go for pink socks and personally I always put my girls in clean, but not brand new, satin shoes as they give feet (even dodgy ones like mine) a lovely line. They feel special too! They don't needto be pricey ones as long as they fit the foot nicely. Dance direct normally do some nice fitting ones I like the sansha ones. All the best I'm sure she will look lovely.

  10. An insiders knowledge. Plain paler coloured leotards are favoured for young applicants but dark one fine, no fancy straps, with a waistband. socks and full sole shoes with elastics x
