Whereas Paris did automatic refunds to the card used for payment, Berlin makes life more difficullt as they supply a pdf from to be filled in with bank details. Obviously, they are hoping that people will tick the voucher or the donation boxes. I am insisting that they refund my card.

"insisting" is a bit strong, isn't it? It's one of three options offered. All you have to do is tick the box, no insisting required. You can't blame them for offering the other two options.

Zurich Opera have now cancelled all shows until 30 April - they are supposed to be "crediting" client accounts with the ticket price value to be used indefinitely against future shows - cheeky.  They should be issuing proper refunds not a credit.  I am not happy about that.  If you want a refund you have to apply on a form - but no option to repay to the credit card you paid with as they ask for bank details. So out of touch/old fashioned.

Chemnitz is also offering only vouchers to be exchanged for another show. Not much good to me; when am I likely to be going to a performance in Chemnitz again?

    Berlin is offering

    refund

    voucher

donate to the dancers' health fund

  3. Romeo and Juliet Performances Cancelled

March 13, 2020 … Barry Hughson, Executive Director of The National Ballet of Canada, today announced that due to the unprecedented pandemic of Coronavirus (COVID-19), all performances of Romeo and Juliet as well as In Studio classes and events are cancelled effective immediately.

The above is for Toronto. All performances are also cancelled at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa.

The R&J run was supposed to go for another week, followed by a tour to Ottawa.

In Germany, Dresden Semperoper has closed until April 19th. They intended to stay open with a reduced audience, but no.

The only big opera/ballet house still open is Hamburg, all others are closed. I guess they will be following soon.

It's kind of ironic that I was supposed to be going to a performance there next week of a contemporary mixed program, and judging by the seating plan, the "reduced audience" had taken care of itself. By my guess not more than 300 tickets had been sold!

  5. I just received an email from Berlin State Ballet (I have 26 tickets booked with them for the coming week) offering the following options:

I would like a voucher for the value of the ticket(s).
     I would like a refund:

I waive a refund and donate the purchase price to the health programme of the Staatsballett Berlin.

San Francisco Ballet is also asking patrons if they would consider donating the value of their ticket. Otherwise they will offer a credit for another SFB performance valid till May 2021. Not much good for people who might be travelling great distances to see the cancelled performances. I wonder if they can get away with not offering a refund.

Paris Opera Ballet is doing automatic refunds (they must have that process down pat by now!)

I tried this morning to book seats in the amphitheatre for the mixed bill on Sat 13th June only to find no seats on offer.  I discovered that this was now listed as a welcome performance, though there were no indications of this in the magazine or online.

What is a "welcome performance"? Sounds very Orwellian if it means that we regular ballet fans are ... not welcome.

Seriously though, could someone explain what that means to me? I was planning to bring a group to that performance (although everything's on hold right now because of COVID)

  7. This from the Canadian Public Health Agency:

    Wearing masks

If you are a healthy individual, the use of a mask is not recommended for preventing the spread of COVID-19.

Wearing a mask when you are not ill may give a false sense of security. There is a potential risk of infection with improper mask use and disposal. They also need to be changed frequently.

However, your health care provider may recommend you wear a mask if you are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 while you are seeking or waiting for care. In this instance, masks are an appropriate part of infection prevention and control measures. The mask acts as a barrier and helps stop the tiny droplets from spreading you when you cough or sneeze.

I work with doctors and pharmacists, and they say that the efficacity of masks, especially the simple paper ones you can buy over the counter, is debatable.  They said that the best thing they accomplish is to stop us touching our own mouths and noses after we've touched something potentially contaminated with virus.  So that's a good thing, I guess!

But other experts say they are worse than useless because the discomfort of wearing one makes people touch their faces more!

We are being told that the only people who should wear masks are those who are already sick (who shouldn't be out in public anyway)

  9. Australian Ballet just announced this 10 minutes ago on their facebook feed

BREAKING NEWS: David Hallberg will be the next artistic director of The Australian Ballet! This international dance star is currently a principal of American Ballet Theatre and Bolshoi Ballet, a principal guest at The Royal Ballet, and Resident Guest Artist of our company. We’re delighted that he’ll be bringing his unique vision, experience and leadership to this role. David has a long relationship with and admiration for our company, and we’re looking forward to welcoming him in 2021.

    and on Hallberg's fb feed

Announced today in Melbourne, I am thrilled to share that I will become the next Artistic Director of The Australian Ballet The Australian Ballet starting January 2021.

I am excited at the opportunity to finally realize an artistic vision and it feels like the right place and the right time to get to work doing so. I have had such amazing opportunities throughout my career and I am so ready to funnel that into a company I so love and respect. I have had a long 10 year history with the company, first as a Guest Artist, then using the expertise of the world renowned Medical Team (which was all explained in the book!) and finally as Resident Guest Artist. This appointment makes so much sense in many ways.

It has been a long and eventful (to say the least) career and I have always known that the time will come where I take all of my absorbed experience and become an Artistic Director. This is the time. I can’t wait to realize my ambitious vision for the future of this essential art form with an institution that I so deeply love and respect.

    See you in Australia!

Did you have prior knowledge re casting for the NBC's Sleeping Beauty or were you having to book blind? I had been hoping that the casting would be listed on the website by now ie.  before the first tranche of booking opened.

Just to let you know, NBOC typically doesn't announce casting till 3 weeks before. I don't know if this will be any different because they are performing at the ROH.
