  1. The Fashion Insitute of Technology Museum in New York (highly recommended to visit if you're ever in NY) has an exhibition about ballet and fashion at the moment. They have started posting videos of presentations at a symposium last month that are really interesting.  Here's the link to the one on Margot Fonteyn, and from there you can move on to Taglioni and Balanchine.

“Enter the Ballerina: Margot Fonteyn and Fashion, 1930s–1960s”

  2. From the Deutsche Welle news site:

Bars, restaurants, day care centers, theaters, and cinemas will stay closed until further notice. Religious gatherings are also canceled for the foreseeable future.

The theatres need to update their websites though. At the moment you can still buy tickets online for Stuttgart Ballet for performances after April 19! No doubt that will get fixed tomorrow.

  3. Karen Kain, Artistic Director of The National Ballet of Canada, and Barry Hughson, Executive Director, today announced the cancellation of the June season. The world premiere of Swan Lake, directed and staged by Ms. Kain, originally planned for June 5 to 21, 2020, will take place June 11 to 27, 2021. Mr. Hughson and Ms. Kain also announced further changes to the 2020/21 season.

The National Ballet of Canada, along with the global community, has faced extraordinary challenges due to COVID-19. We are all in unchartered territory. The safety and health of our artists, staff, patrons and community is our foremost priority. In accordance with government orders and public health guidance, the National Ballet has cancelled all June performances. The world premiere of Swan Lake will take place in June 2021,” said Mr. Hughson. “The special Karen Kain 50th Anniversary Celebration Gala planned for June 9 has been rescheduled to November 24, 2020. These unprecedented circumstances have required us to make changes to the 2020/21 season including the postponement of the company’s appearance at the Royal Opera House in London, the world premiere of Wayne McGregor’s MADDADDAM, the North American premiere of Cathy Marston’s Victoria and the guest appearance by San Francisco Ballet. These are challenging times for all of us but with the support of our patrons, staff and artists, the National Ballet will weather this storm and return to the stage stronger than ever, when it is safe to do so.

There is a live concert from the Bavarian State Opera tomorrow 23 March at 7.15pm (UK time) which includes excerpts from Neumeier’s Lady of the Camellias and Cranko’s Taming of the Shrew performed by Principals of the Bavarian State Ballet Prisca Zeisel, Dmitrii Vyskubenko, Laurretta Summerscales and Yonah Acosta. The performance will be available to watch on demand later. Looks like the ballet section will be at the end.

I have a feeling this may not happen with today's latest restrictions on groups of more than 2 people in Germany.

Thanks for this, stucha.  The primary difference for me between the two was in the actual filming.  I don't know about anyone else but I found the constant pull to close ups in the contemporary one most distracting.  It so distracts from the charming line of the dance.

I actually can't bear to watch the recent one (I have it on DVD) because of the camera work

    Thank you @toursenlair

Interesting to see this controversial updated production by Nikolaj Hubbe.  Much of the Bournonville choreography in Act 2 is gone, along with the original music replaced by a very modern score and new choreography by Hubbe. There is much comic business in Act 1 which seems very unfunny these days and possibly some of the original choreography has been cut in Act 1. But Act 3 seems to be intact.

This is the first time I've seen Alban Lendorf dance. Wow.

Actually the traditional Act II choreo wasn't Bournonville either.

Without wishing to pry, Katherine, how is all this affecting you?

thanks for your concern, Anne. It's pretty much wiped out my business for this year. I had four group trips scheduled between now and the end of June; two of them are now off and I'm not at all optimistic about the other two. I can't usually organize fall trips because I have to wait till all the companies announce what they're doing to identify the "best ballet for your buck" trips, and by the time that happens (Stuttgart, for instance, doesn't announce what they're doing till June typcially), people have already made their travel plans for the fall. Maybe not this year though.

For now I am hunkered down with Minkus (my cat) at home in Toronto and not going anywhere!

    Stay well, everyone!
