We had a literal hornets' nest in a bird box a couple of years ago.  It was rather intimidating at first but they were very considerate and other than the occasional close inspection of sunbathing humans or dogs kept themselves to themselves.  I wish wasps would copy.

Now you’ve got me thinking I need to look for a nest close to or in house. I’ve naively liked to think they always nest in the woods but maybe this year they’ve moved a bit closer as attracted to house lights in evening.
I can’t relax and sleep knowing there is one or more hornet indoors plus have a cat and puppy that might encounter them.

  2. Adding hornets to Room 101 - every summer we have a few that make it into house but over last few weeks it’s been at least one per evening/night. Was hoping after the weather broke yesterday we’d get a night off but wasn’t to be.

  3. I think if she has hip pain then you need to contact your GP surgery for an appointment.
Children often have differing limb lengths but they need accurate assessment by a specialist. Often it is just a normal variant and not a concern. The pain may be unrelated to the differing leg lengths.

  4. I would say the nerves are completely normal and it’s good that you are aware of them. I think she will find everyone will be feeling the same to some extent although whether they show those feelings is another matter. I would be tempted to acknowledge her feelings, she might get upset but better than bottling it all up. Her friendship groups will change but they may have changed anyway with the move to a local high school. And there is no reason why she can’t keep in touch with friends out of vocational school, we found it healthy to see non dance friends in holidays.

  5. I posted a number of items on this board on 22nd May - if anyone would like any of them for the cost of postage please let me know. The items will be off to the charity shop in next few weeks if no takers.
The body suits used to be on the Elmhurst uniform list for under costumes. The Bethany leotard was only used for a vocational exam, classes were taken in school uniform.

  6. If your Dd usually wears ouch pouches or other protection it really is up to her to make sure they are available for the fitting, I wouldn’t rely on the fitter offering any - some dancers don’t use anything or just a bit of tape on certain toes. If it was her first fitting I would expect the fitter to suggest or offer them or ask what the dancer expects to use to protect feet.

Anyone going, plan to arrive early!  The Wimbledon day 1 entry process was so chaotic that despite being in good time, we lost a good hour and a half of spectating, and the queue  built up to way over half a mile. There were problems with the scanning system itself, then the ongoing issue that scanners don't read screens in bright sunlight (which is why other tournaments had awnings up!!!), and ultimately the fact that they concentrate the whole scanning and security process inside a very narrow gateway instead of distributing it in an external buffer zone as they do to an extent at Roland Garros..  Once inside the perimeter of course everything works so well that it's a painful contrast!

Thank you for the heads up. Tickets for Saturday and Greater Anglia striking so journey now more complicated and longer than expected

Apologies to everyone else already in Room 101, but I'm afraid you are now going to have to put up with my neighbours.

    Sorry about that. 😂

I know you don’t live near me @taxi4ballet but ours drive me to distraction and the property is an ex pub. How can a young family be more irritating than a pub? My list is endless 😏

  9. Apart from Gaynor Minden I don’t think I remember an pre arched shoe - I might be wrong. I thought the shaping to foot came from wearing them in.

We don’t live in London but used to make a day trip to get pointe shoes even when we found a shoe that seemed to work because their feet and strength change so much and adaptations to fit are needed.

  10. I think the Merlet have a poly carbon shank. I’m not sure about the ‘support the arches’ bit - if they can do that? Dd has high arches and instep but her feet were strong when she danced full time and Merlet worked well for her although she would have 3 or 4 pairs on the go at a time.
Have you visited Dancia in London?  They stock numerous brands plus benefit of Bloch and Freed within walking distance.

  11. Your Dd feet sound similar to my ex dancing daughter. Mine did have a bespoke fitting but I don’t think it helped, she still got through them pretty I seem to remember. She also went through a stage of bespoke Grishko with a higher vamp.
When Merlet launched they were the shoe that suited her best although initially she would snap the shank although the company worked with her to sort that issue.
Is your dd rotating between two or three pairs of shoes so they can dry fully between uses?

Edited to add that any bespoke shoe will take a number of weeks/months and until wearing them you don’t know if they suit so false economy to order more than one pair initially.

  12. If the satin was really difficult I’d sometimes put a needle in at an angle so it was flat to to platform and wriggle it about to loosen the satin. I’d also use a rubber needle grip and if desperate a piece of wood to bang needle through material.
I do not miss darning pointe shoes at all
