Peter Frame, dancer & teacher RIP

Recommended Posts

Just the read the sad news that Peter Frame, a former principal with NYCB ballet, has died.  May he rest in peace.  Another wonderful artist gone - but whose memory for those who were privileged enough to see him will remain cherished.. He was also latterly head of weight training at SAB.  It is also quite ironic that his death should be noted on the same day as that of the inspired Paul Taylor as they worked closely together on a number of occasions.  Frame was the second person to do the Taylor solo in Balanchine's Episodes.  Indeed Taylor reconstructed it for him after the master choreographer's death.

I'm not certain if he ever danced in the UK but here he is in the second trio of Agon (near the start of this clip starting at 1.41- Frame is the taller of the two men - the other being the late Victor Castelli) aside the ever glorious Maria Calegari.

The news of Paul Taylor's death was very sad for us here, but the news of Peter Frame's death was devastating to many of us.  Taylor, of course, is well-known by all.  Peter, not as well known, was a beautiful dancer.  Probably even more important was the legacy he left so many students at SAB, CPYB, and BAE.  We are all grieving the loss of one gone way too soon.

A lovely piece by Peter Frame about teaching the Taylor solo in Episodes at MCB can be found here and an interview with him written two weeks after Balanchine's death in which he talks about working aside his twin brother, Paul, who was also in NYCB, can be found by clicking here

Megan Fairchild, a NYCB principal and also an SAB Faculty Member has written a very moving and important remembrance of Peter Frame on her IG account here and here P. Frenette speaks of how Frame actually saved his career.

Thank you--those are wonderful tributes.
