Jan McNulty
Wednesday, 14 February 2018 PRESS RELEASE SWEETSHOP REVOLUTION MAKE A WELCOME RETURN TO DANCEEAST WITH BEAUTiFUL, A POWERFUL EXAMINATION OF FEMALE SEXUALITY Friday 9 March | 7.30pm Sally Marie’s Sweetshop Revolution will make a welcome return to DanceEast with new dance theatre production BEAUTiFUL following a sell-out performance of I Loved You and I Loved You in 2016. With five female dancers, BEAUTiFUL explores love and sexuality from the point of view of women; what is fantasised about, desired and permissible within the complex web of social structures, expectations and social history. With issues of female inequality and sexual harassment at the forefront of the public consciousness BEAUTiFUL will celebrate the solidarity of women and look past the pressure to conform. As Sally Marie says, ‘More than ever I believe that it’s vital for women to communicate “the female gaze” creatively. The five extraordinary performers in this show plunge us into their private worlds, slicing through the tissued layers of elusive truths and false assumptions by which many of us live. We’re driven to look seriously and humorously – but always closely – at how women are objectified on stage and in the wider world. Our collective purpose? To generate outrageous pleasure, inspire insight and provoke debate.’ Hand-picked following a competitive audition process by Sally Marie, the cast of BEAUTiFUL will lead the audience through their own experience of sexuality and love, taking the attributes, behaviours and roles generally associated with girls and women to a more truthful and liberating place. Sally Marie will also host a talk at the Jerwood DanceHouse for International Woman’s Day to invite discussion on women’s experience and relationships across the last 300 years. Audiences are invited for a free glass of wine and a chance to hear some of Sally Marie’s discoveries from her research on women and sexuality, with the opportunity for audience questions. About Sweetshop Revolution Sweetshop Revolution’s aim is to make dance-theatre that is as thought-provoking as it is entertaining. Quintus
we're going to that - I like to support Dance East as it's a nice venue and rather a lonely oasis of culture in Ipswich, but we sometimes struggle to find things we want to see...
