Ursula Moreton Choreographic Award: Young Female Choreographers Rewarded

Recommended Posts

Wonderful to see three young female choreographers scoop the prizes at the Royal Ballet Upper School's Ursula Moreton Choreographic Award on Wednesday night: Rebecca Blenkinsop (Australia) Marina Fraser (UK) and Genevieve Debney (UK). Particularly interesting was that the judges, Christopher Wheeldon, Wayne McGregor, Kevin O'Hare and Aletta Collins, clearly loved the narrative content of two of the pieces: Marina Fraser's 'Fickle Strings' (2nd prize) a traditional Scottish dance/ballet fusion to contemporary Scot's fiddle music, which explored the musician's relationship with his instrument, and Genevieve Debney's 'Muted' (3rd prize) a hard-hitting political piece highlighting the agony of women in abusive relationships. Out of nine candidates 5 were female. Let's hope these exciting new artistic voices will be encouraged in their future careers.
