He's in Bulgaria - first company plenty of ex-pats so language not a problem, current, as mentioned, want you to speak their language.  It's not essential but it is expected, if that makes sense.   He's proved quite adept at picking up speaking in other languages.  Less so written!  He was previously in Czechia and there was some overlap.  Time off for injury also, oddly, contributed - working as a KP in a London hotel, such a mix of nationalities.

And he was truly awful at languages at school.

Thanks meadowblythe.  Let's hope they are all back to what they love doing very soon

On the other hand, what a brilliant opportunity to truly learn a language and appreciate another culture.  A lot easier to do when you are young and presumably most schools offer some support, or lessons could be had out of school (and in advance of moving) to help, at least with the conversational language.  Also opening up opportunities for employment further along the way, both in dance and other professions.

DS has danced in Europe since graduation.  In his current company there are 3 English speakers but they are all aware that to make progress they need to speak the national language if they want to be considered for solo/principal roles.  The other 2, who have been there a few years, are fluent - it's a powerful incentive.

Would you say which country your DS is in, just cos I’m curious about the language he has to learn? My DS is in Poland but far from fluent!

  3. I'm not entering the Liam Scarlett debate, but here is a short film about the making of 'Nasz Chopin' for the Polish National Ballet in April 2019 with some excellently watchable ballet. Principal is Dawid Trzensimiech, Royal Ballet Upper School trained, and former Solist with The Royal Ballet. In the corps are Phoebe Liggins (ENB School trained) and my own Laurence Elliott (Upper School trained), both in their first professional company jobs.

Bennet Gartside is giving an online class tomorrow at 7pm (UK time) on the Everybody Ballet Instagram site.

I don't know how well it will work as it's the first time but I'm going to give it a try.

Don’t know what you thought Tango Dancer but I absolutely loved it. Just right for me (ie: beginner)

  5. Good advice above. I personally know many dancers who have come back very successfully from shinsplints, and/or are managing shinsplints, including professionals. So it’s not necessarily going to prevent going as far as you can in dance.

  6. My friend has an old autograph book from the 1920s with many signatures of well known operatic singers. She was advised by The Antiques Roadshow to advertise it for sale in a specialist publication. Any ideas for this please? I’m a ballet fan so bit clueless when it comes to opera.

For any young DS’s (or DD’s) out there, I’ve heard that ex Royal Ballet Company Principal Rupert Pennefather will be taking on a few students for private weekly coaching, mainly based at IAF.

He taught my Dd pas de deux last year before she went to Central and he was absolutely fantastic.

I can’t give his email out but I believe he’s contactable via LinkedIn.

    Based where ? Sounds amazing

  8. I'm just back from seeing the Hungarian National Ballet, whose 'Sylvia' included quite a long male (comedy) solo from a very experienced character artiste en pointe. We were left thinking, men need to know what they are doing en pointe, and not mess around, or they could sustain an injury (no joke).

Where did you order from? DS is desperate for some dancewear that isn’t black, navy or grey!

UK based Move dancewear are very reliable and sell red or bright blue shorts online. Boysdancetoo.com are in the US so their site is worth a look

  10. Hi there, unless people know something I don’t know, I can’t think of a shop that has a good selection of dancewear for guys. Capezio, Dancia, Freed, Bloch in Covent Garden sell shoes and socks and dancebelts. My DS gets practice wear from H&M sports section. Dance shorts he gets from the US 😂. There’s a Lululemon in Covent Garden. Wishing you well for your trip.
